2008 F53 Chassis - My fuel tank will leak whenever I fill up my tank. If it is set to pump fast, the leaks starts quickly; if the nozzle is set to pump slowly, the leak will start when the tank nears full. In Oregon, where manned service is required, attendants tell me that this leaking happens on certain vehicle models, but they can't tell me how to stop it. I don't know what part of the tank's spout is leaking, but I'm wondering if some sort of sleeve could be put around the spout to prevent the leaks. I don't seem to have any leaking problem while driving. This problem is embarrassing and frustrating because of the spills at the pump and because I can't fill my tank completely full most of the time.

Any experience with this problem or suggestions?

Thanks.

One of my Class A's had to have the filler hose replaced. It had cracks in it.
Kept smelling gas fumes. The dealership started with the part you actually fill at, then replaced the filler hose and finally had to drop the gas tank,
after driving as much gas as I could out of it. Never did find a problem with the gas tank. Everyonce in a while, would still get the fumes. But, the main problem was with the filler hose to the gas tank.

The filling tube is usually modified by the coach builder to fit there model MH. This is done on both Class A's and C's.

Tell us what make and model MH you have.

There is your steel fill pipe and it connects to you tank with a rubber coupling which connect to pipe and tank together it sometimes gets cracks and starts leaking mine did. On mine they crushed it between the frame it rubbed a hole in it when they installed tank.

I have replaced a few filler tubes in my time, though not on a motor home. It seems in recent years, tank tubes are made of a flexible rubber compound. I wonder if your filler tube to the tank has too sharp of a bend in it, causing the dribbling you describe. I suggest to get on the ground on your back under the filler tube and see if the tube to the tank is made of rubber, and see if it has too sharp of a bend somewhere along the way, causing the rubber walls to come together to create a restriction. The restriction could be in the air return, not neccesarily the filling itself as there is a harder plastic hose-in-the-tube for that. If a kink is found, see if you can reshape it. You might have to add something to keep it in a kink-less shape, like using many fat wire ties and two lengths of thick bendable plastic on each side of the kink. Two 12" flexible rubbery rulers from an office supply store comes to mind.

I had the same problem. It was the molded fuel hose between the gas tank
and the outside gas filler tube.I went thu Oregon and always had to look for a slow gas station were they let me fill the motor home my self.By filling it slow the leak also slow down.Mine is a 1995 Ford
E350 chassis.Yous is a newer couch that might not be the same problem.

Thanks for all the replies on this topic. The responses were pretty consistent. I'm having the motorhome de-winterized on Tuesday so I'll ask the dealer to check it out. Thanks so much.

Just had to replace the rubber connector tube from the fill to the tank on mine (cracked). First time I've ever had this problem on any vehicle. Went to the part store and bought a generic filler tube, cut it to size and pushed it on.

On ours, the metal "filler" on the side of the body connects to two long "pipes" (which I believe are galvanized steel electrical conduit) with "rubber hose." Filler and Vent. The 1-1/2" filler hose was covered in a black grime with cracks in it, so I replaced at the filler and the tank.
I used hose from NAPA, but marine hose will work and is probably more durable. The hose wasn't as damaged as it appeared but I'm glad I changed it. Getting at the tank end was difficult. I think the Vent was 5/8"

There is two hose clamps on the steel tube, You might try tightening the clamps, They are the same type clamps that is on the radiator hose, Tightening with a small socket and ratchet and not a screw driver, Is the best.
