You did not mention, if the mechanic checked, and veryfied that both, the filler neck, and the tank neck, that are made of sheet metal, are completlly round, a small dent, on one of them, is all you need fron fuel to creep out, also check for small cracks where the tubes where joined and or soldered, a pin hole after the hose, is all you need to smell fuel.
Also, make shure, that the filler hose, does not have hard bends, at the tube conections, a hard bend, before the tube, will not allow the rubber, to seal correctlly when tightening the clamps.
Do not over tighten the clamps, you can actually cut the hose. Band clamps are tight, when a bit of rubber bulges out, through the band holes, sort of like a loaf on a baking pan, not to high.
