I was always under the impression that safety chains should be crossed when hooked to the truck and that is what it shows in the book but when we brought our new trailer home the shop guy at the dealership said they should not be crossed. Is this because of the wd hitch or was he wrong????

some states, say to cross the chains. it is the law in some states. your guy needs to learn what is right and wrong about towing. I bet he was not a certified RV tech was he?

Chains need to be crossed. The theory is the criss cross will catch the hitch if it pops of the truck. It is law in many states to cross the chains.

I doubt it makes any real difference. It's nearly impossible for a unit with a weight distribution hitch to come off of the ball.

California Vechicle code requires them to be crossed to form a cradle! Had them inspected by CHP and he noted they were crossed.

I always cross them, but I just figured it was for luck, like crossing your fingers . . . .

Crossed is the law, in most states and common sense in the rest.
