We tow a 2001 Jeep Wrangler. It has 8,000 miles on it of which approx. 2000 are towed miles. We've recently noticed a strange noise in the rear. We took it to our mechanic and he noticed that the front tires weren't wearing properly. The tread on the inside of the tire is wearing unevenly. He called it "cupping". He checked alignment, rotated the front to the rear and reduced tire pressure by about 7 lbs. He thought it may be due to towing.
Has anyone else ever had this problem?
Thanks.

All 4x4's will cup the front tires if not rotated on aggresive schedule. Other potential causes are worn shocks and tire pressure. Combo of these affect too.
Shocks because there might be some small bounces or ocillations that the shock can't manage. New or heavier duty shocks solve that cause.
I've known about 4x4's cupping front tires all my life (I'm old) and still don't know exactly why, but confirm it does happen.

BenK,
Even rotating on an aggresive program I have been unable to stop the cupping. Towed jeeps for years and just learned to live with it. If someone comes up with a reason I sure would like to hear from them.

Think live axle (solid...not independent) has a lot to do with it, but not totally.
All of my old 4x4's with live axle front ends cupped severely. Tried pressure, helped a bit. Tried HD shocks, helped a bit. Rotated every 3K miles, helped a lot, but still cupped.
Present Suburban has IFS and it doesn't cup hardly at all. Does a bit the one time I let it go past 10K miles before rotation.
All types and brands of tires tried too. Worst was the old Norseman (think made by Armstrong).
Be kind of fun to convince some kid working on his/her phyisic's PhD to do a study on this!
