RE: Main Slide Leak...Loose top seal?

Chain...
Thanks for the quick and insightful response. What makes this interesting to me (not so much the DW) is that we had two terrential downpours during our trip. One of them was in your great state of Maine and the other was in Northern Mass. In Maine, we had no leaks whatsoever, but in Northern Mass we experienced the problem. This is what causes me to think it is likely "user error" or some fluke that bit us that time around.
In researching this, I found other posts alluding to a gap between the corner moldings on the outside top corners of each slide. This corner where the face plates come together is then covered by a single piece with a few screws. I see that most of my corners have this gap in them, with the one closest to the source of this leak being pretty wide and what appears to be a large enough opening at the base to allow water to penetrate. However, I don't see how this could ultimately result in a leak that seemed to come from the bottom corner seal.
Any and all thoughts are still very appreciated!

Main Slide Leak...Loose top seal?

Just returned from a 2.5 week trip to New England and have a very uneventful trip...for the most part.
However, we did have two major rains during the trip. During one of these torrential downpours water got into the coach from the back of the main slide. It is possible that the top seals were not rolled in the right direction. However, as I just looked at them, I notice another potential issue.
These top "flap" seals are not what I would consider tight against the top of the outside slide roof. As compared to the other two slides, they are clearly putting less pressure onto the slide roof. It seems quite reasonable to think this could be our leak source. The DW thinks maybe the slides are out of alignment as well.
So...the questions for you all are:
1) Do all of your top slide seals lay "tight" against the top of your roof?
2) How do you best determine alignment of the slide and how much (or little) discrepancy between top/bottom or left/right is acceptable?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts...Later...Away...

RE: Aerospace 303 Use Question?

Here's a follow-up...
Taking everyone's thoughts and comments into account, I opted to "slather" it on the entire coach by spraying and wiping with a rubber-gloved hand. This seemed to work quite well and went surprisingly fast.
The challenge was in getting the excess off the coach around 24 hours later. Since we never seem to follow directions in my house and DW always has a "better" idea, we took a different approach to removing the excess. The directions say to use a damp towel to remove it. At first, we thought a damp mop would accomplish the same thing, but quickly learned that we couldn't get the mop quite dry enough to do the job. We then opted to use sponges because they would be much easier to rinse and keep clean than a towel. Made sense, but here's the rub (pardon the pun). I did the top half, while the wife and one of the sons did the bottom. My half was done a single time, while the wife simply followed the son cleaning up his mess. In the end, the bottom looked good, and the top looked smeared.
So...I guess the question now is how do you all take OFF the excess in the most efficient and effective manner?
Thanks much...Later...Away

RE: Aerospace 303 Use Question?

All good stuff so far...Thanks!
Another more specific question...When you apply 303, how exactly do you physically do it? I had one response recommending a floor mop to apply a light coat that wouldn't require a ladder. I like that idea, but I'm interested to know what other approaches folks are using to apply 303 to the full exterior of a coach?

Okay...I'm sold!
How much would you all recommend to do a full exterior cover of the coach?
Where would you recommend purchasing?

RE: Aerospace 303 Use Question?

Sorry for the confusion...
I am looking at using 303 for UV protection on all exposed surfaces, for example:
1) Full gelcoat fiberglass exterior (including vinyl graphics)
2) Various rubber seal components, primarily slide seals
3) Tires on 5er and TV
4) Others to be determined based on feedback by common users
If I am off-target anywhere here, please share your insight. I never claimed to know it all...that's DW's job :W

RE: Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

Yes I did receive the TST manual. I believe I requested it via email/web post in the morning and received it later that day. It isn't as "flashy" as the Doran's, but it gets the job done just fine.

Aerospace 303 Use Question?

I am looking at going with Aerospace 303 for UV protection of our coach. One of the first questions I have is how much of this magical stuff will I need to address a 35 foot fifth wheel? I was looking at purchasing a gallon of 303, but is this actually “enough” to get the job done?
Along those lines, what are the highs and lows of Aerospace 303 for you all? Any hints on other good uses of the technology? How did you apply it to your coach? Have you been happy with the results?
Thanks much…Later…Away…

Truck System Technologies TPMS Installation and Settings?

Thanks again to all of those who provided valuable input in helping us settle on a tire pressure monitoring system for the GMC and 5er. I have set up the TST system and all is working...but causing me to ask some questions of the pros:
1) I am running fronts on TV at 70psi and rears on TV at 80psi. What recommendations do folks have for min/max psi settings and max temp setting? I have initially set min psa 15% below and max psa as 20% above. Temp setting is around 180F...but I have no clue on that one.
2) On the topic of temp readings, can anyone explain why the temp reading in Fahrenheit shows as a negative (i.e. 87 degrees shows as -87). The value is correct, but it reads negative. It registers as a positive number in Celcius.
I will be asking the manufacturer these questions as well, but am curious to know what you all think.
Thanks in advance...Later...Away...

RE: Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

Decision made...
I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with a representative of TST Friday, and about the same with the folks at Doran. They were both very helpful, but one had more "specific" answers, while the other seemed more "canned." After this discussion and some additional research, I purchased the TST system on Friday. I asked many questions of them both to get responses to some of the concerns raised in this thread. Although there are a couple key things about the Doran I like a little better, there were also a couple things about the TST that I found equally inviting.
For those that are curious, and with no desire for a point/counter-point discussion, here are some of the reasons I opted for the TST system:
I really like the TST temperature capabilities. After learning that it measures ambient temperature through the valve itself, I find this a more precise way to meausure for potential issues related to dragging brake or wheel hub issues. Although pressure will rise with temperature, it would be a potentially slower reading.
I really like the Doran's fast leak protection of 2.8psi lost in 12 seconds triggering an alarm. However, the TST offers a similar trigger with a loss of 6psi in 12 seconds. With a baseline pressure of 80psi all around, I believe the 6psi in 12 seconds will serve the purpose well.
Admitedly, I like the "look" of the Doran better as well, only not 50% more with all other capabilities being pretty much equal.
Thanks again to you all for your input...and don't be surprised if I post a followup once the unit arrives and I begin planning the installation.

I got the same $6 each price from my Discount Tire. Turns out our 5er already has metal stems. I agree it is an amazing price for such a worthy safety feature.

RE: Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

FYI...
I emailed TST at 9:15 this morning asking for an electronic copy of their Users Manual. By 10:00am, I had a response and an attached PDF of the manual. In addition, I had a voicemail at the house by 11:00am. It does appear that the folks at TST are putting good effort towards customer needs.
Now that I have comparable info on both technologies, I will nail one down in the next couple days...I hope. I may even share the decision in this thread...who knows?

RE: Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

I'm ready to buy...and...will post the result to a new thread when the time comes. It will be one of these two options, but unfortunatley I am almost afraid of making my decision public in light of the tone this thread has taken.
Frankly, I have grown a little weary of getting notices of a new posting only to find that it is another slam of the ping-pong ball across the table. If there were enough new facts flying back-and-forth with the ball that would be great, but alas, it appears facts are falling behind accusations and innuendos.
I am confident that I will be very content with whatever unit I ultimately purchase and the facts provided by everyone along the way in this post provided a great deal of information to help me make an educated decision.
Thanks to you all for the insight...Later and Out...Away...

RE: Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

More good stuff! From what I can see online, it appears there are more mounting "options" included with the Doran which is an attractive feature. However, the temperature readings associated with the TST are equally appealing.
So, on the temperature topic, I realize that it has been argued that it doesn't have a great value as it may be reading ambient temps. The next questions are: 1) Does any "know" how and what the TST is using to measure temps, and 2)wouldn't the temp readings provide you with additional safety measures related to overheating hubs or dragging brakes when in transit?
Thanks again...keep it coming...Later...Away...

RE: Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

Outstanding information so far. Don't worry about the difference of opinions...life would be boring without them ;-)
Let's take it another step. How have you all mounted each system in your trucks? In the case of the TST, where did you mount antenna? In the case of the Doran, if you needed repeater where did you mount that?
Bottom line, we will be getting one soon and installation could play a role in the decision.

RE: Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

Thanks again to everyone. I haven't gotten anything yet to support the additional $200 for the Doran (or PP) vs. the TST system. Admittedly, I like the looks of the Doran a little better than the TST, but I also like the looks of $200 in my bank account.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated...Thanks...Away...

Ayuh...considered PP and is still somewhat in the running. Life is all about getting what you pay for, so I am hoping to see "what" I am paying for between the Doran and the TST system?

Doran 360 or Truck System Tech TPMS...Help?

This year’s added safety or comfort feature for the 5er is a TPMS system. I have researched the options quite a bit and have determined that the Doran or TST system is the most appealing to me. I understand that any TPMS is better than no TPMS, but I would like some input on a direct comparison of the two as it relates to their “value.”
The Doran 360 for an 8-tire setup would run $600, while the TST system would run around $400. My question to you all is what—if any—justification is there for dropping the extra $200 on the Doran system when they both appear to be quality pieces that accomplish the same tasks?
Thanks in advance for your input…Later…Away…

RE: Good Campgrounds near Mammouth Cave

I've never stayed there, but I hear Nolin Lake State Park is a great place to stay while visiting the cave area for those that must have hookups. I'm not sure how far away the National Park is, but I think you have to cross a river on a ferry to get there.
Have visited Mammoth twice and both times we stayed at Nolin Lake State Park. Fantastic location and descent fishing. The statement above is correct, you ride a cable driven ferry across the Green River and it is a highlight of the entrance into Mammoth Cave. What amazed us was how much wildlife we saw along the roads and in the park.
A great time will be had by all...no doubt!

RE: Maine Lake Camping Question???

Hello Again!
There is no doubt that we would love to return to South Arm again in 2009. However, as indicated above, the schedules just aren't going to match up. It is a nearly perfect example of Maine lake camping to us and is what we are hoping to recreate in 2009 at another Maine location.
Keep the South Arm "like" suggestions coming and thanks again!
