RE: Newbie Roof Questions

Fiberglass is the longest lasting and probably the strongest. Some have a gelcoat finish and some are painted with a clearcoat as a topcoat.
I am not aware of any motorhomes being built with aluminum roofs but I could be wrong.
Monaco and Tiffin have had a few problems with their fiberglass roofs on some late models but I do not know to what extent.
Winnebago has had some problems with their fiberglass roof as well, some of them pretty serious.
Recent Discussion
Personally we've had aluminum, EPDM rubber, and Brite Tek. Aluminum was ok but it does draw the heat and you can hear every rain drop. I like hearing the rain to some extent, but it gets old after a while. EPDM chalks, causing the dreaded black streaks. As soon as you clean it it all happens again. I'm not a fan. I AM a fan of Brite Tek. Simple, tough, quiet, virtually maintenance free, and simple to repair should something happen. On our '00 Dutch Star I needed to get through the Brite Tek (doing a project); it took a brand new razor blade with a fair amount of effort to get through it. We're on our 3rd coach with Brite Tek and I see no downside at all.

We did try to modify a 350 Cat into a Cummins ISX but Jimmy wanted nothing to do with it. Rookie. :B
Bruce, sorry we didn't make it, we were in Sevierville Tn, at an American Coach national rally. Interesting that Fleetwood, American Coach announced that they are switching from Spartan chassis to Freightliner for their American Coach line, and they will be offering the Detroit Diesel engine in the Eagle model. Freightliner had a display chassis on display with the DD engine and it looked nice. The DD has less horsepower, but more torque (read: more cubes).
This is an interesting move for AC which will bear watching in the future to see if it is accepted by the customers.
That is interesting. Newmar went to Freightliner for the Mountain Aire on down a year ago (Spartan still on the Essex up). At the time it was sugested that Freightliner still had some pre-emission engines left, making their chassis much less $$$ than a comparible Spartan - up to $25K less in some cases. Makes me wonder if thats the case with the DD's as well.

give me 38 hours
before the mini Travel Supreme Weekend
Mini Travel Supreme weekend (2), maximum Newmar weekend (3). :B
I think we'll have 2-3 Jayco's as well, at least 2 Fun Finders - and I'm not sure what else.
And as always - I don't care if you run a rope between 2 trees and hang a blue tarp, as long as you're having a good time you are more than welcome at our campfire!

RE: Can I cut a hole in the side of a Journey

Have you seen the nice entertainment centers that came as standard equpment on the DL model. My 2002 Journey has one. Under the awning side. Lift compartment and its all there, no cutting holes.
You might want to take a look at one and use it as a template in you plans.
Good suggestion. I copied where Newmar put it in from the factory - I installed a bigger TV than available from the factory, saved a bunch of $$$, and had a good time doing it.
Started with this:

Ended up with this, with no holes cut:

RE: What would you do?

So I've been thinking...no, really, I have :B; since there was nothing on the web site and no one said anything to you on check in, the only logical answer is the rules they gave you are outdated and you are more than welcome at their park.
Enjoy your stay.

RE: thinking of buying this m/h, any advise//

I see nothing that a few hours with a buffer won't fix. Well...that and some duct tape. :B
On a serious note; if you have the time and ability it does look like it might be a fun project.

bruce, I will you chip in for your "Diesel Fund"!
There...fixed it for you. :B
Seriously though, if you need fuel when you're close I'd suggest getting at TS. Normally they're lower than anyone around and it's easy in, easy out. Just a few miles down the road from the camp ground.

RE: Tire size variations from vendor spec

Razor1949 has this one right. 255/80's are too small. It NEEDS 275/70's on it, and was recalled to put them on.

RE: TPO roofs inthe hot sun???

And I believe your '99 Bounder had a true rubber roof - I could be wrong. The newer TPO type material is much better than the EPDM rubber material used in the past.

RE: poorly done ad by Newell

Just noticed the back cover of the May issue of FMCA magazine. Newell always buys the back cover space.
This month they show their coach driving down a beautiful country road in what appears to be the Swiss Alps.
Only problen is they were too cheap to actually take a coach there for the photo shoot. Obvious photo shop picture.
Newell, Cheesy.
Maybe it is a shot of the Trinity Alps in Northern California? JH
And if that is the case who looks cheesy now? Oops...:o
Another example of some people aren't happy until they have something to complain about. I have to admit, this one goes the extra mile in creating an issue just to complain.

RE: Winnebago Factory Defect

I've never heard of an entire roof or a part of the roof separating from the roof itself and flying off, and I doubt it could happen.
It can happen, and does.

RE: Mounting Solar Panels

I had a good idea where our trusses were and used a stud finder to confirm it. Then I used sheet metal screws and sealer. Works great so far.
You can see the installation HERE.
