RE: Most reliable laptops?

I've been buying Dells for years now, in fact I just ordered a new Lattitude with Win 7 64 bit OS and 4MB of RAM. The Dell Inspiron I'm typing on now I use for work, and it's been used every day (and some nights) for the last 3 years, in airports, on vacations, etc. This one has been trouble free, but the Inspirons my college kids have had a few warranty issues. I decided to go for the Lattitude to get a docking station...I need a real monitor and keyboard!
I wouldn't say Dells a re any better, but I do like the ability to customize the machine when it's built, upgrade the memory, OS, etc.

RE: The 10% min Tongue weight rule - Why?

John, I'll bet if you contact the RVIA they can get you a copy of the presentation(s) made at that seminar back in March, possibly also put you in touch with the one or more of the presenters.
Another thought, have you contacted Ron Hensley, the designer of the Hensley Arrow? I believe he is over at ProPride now and you should be able to get in touch with him through Sean Woodruff the CEO there. Reason I mention that is that the HA is famously INsensitive to the tongue weight of the trailer. An HA mounted to a TT with 5% tongie weight will "feel" the same towing as an HA mounted to a TT with 15% tongue weight. In other words, the mechanics of the HA negate, offset, whatever word you;re comfortable with, the instability caused by insufficient tongue weight.
Sorry I don't have the answer you;re looking for but I can help you dig!

RE: Did the 8.1L always come with an Allison?

Yes, the Allison was an option. The 8.1 is actually de-tuned to work with the 4L-80E if you don't have the Ally. The 4L85E came out in 2003.

RE: GM 2500 hitch flex?

Agreed, problems werre on the 00-07 models, they put basically the same receiver on the 2500's as the 1500's with one minor reinforcement added...In the earlier years like my 01 had the same receiver as the 1500. This design allowed a lot of flexing under heavy loads when towing at/near the limits, and resulted in stress cracks and a few failures.
But from what I understand the receivers were redesigned and the new one are very stout, you shouldn't have any issues on your 09.

RE: They want $5K - FINAL REPORT

Having just been through this on my '01 8.1L Suburban, I learned that the both the crush washer and the pinion nut should be replaced, since the nut is some kind of one-time-use lock nut.
My problem started with a leaking pinion seal, and the shop that did the work changed the seal without changing the crush washer and nut. They got the preload set wrong and the rear started to howl. A second visit had them re-torquing the pinion nut in an attempt to correct the howl, but then they over torqued it and the pinion bearing disingtegrated. Debris from the ruined pinion bearing now ruined the ring and pinion. I wound up having the axle rebuilt with all new seals, bearings and a new OEM R&P for $915, and the first shop paid the bill.

RE: Should slide be let out for winter storage.

I only have mine open if I'm working in the TT doing off-season upgrades. I always close them if snow/ice is expected, or if they otherwise don't need to be open.

RE: Crossed Over to the 6 Volt Side of Life!

Calif, I'm on my second set of those batteries, you won't be disappointed. I noticed a significant increase in usable power over 2 group 24's I had before them. The advantage of the 6V is that they are true deep cycle, and can withstand repeated discharges better than their 12v counterparts.

RE: 2nd MALWARE in two months, I can't believe it!!!

If you had 7 invasions in less than one week, that would indicate that you still have latent malware on your system that is opening a back door for these pests....download and run SuperAntiSpyware, see if it finds anything, or if that doesn't help, try ComboFix.
It's possible that whatever is letting in these pests in running in the background and under the radar of whatever anti-virus program you are using. The hackers write these things specifically to avoid detection, and some even disable AV protection while the install themselves, then re-enable without you knowing what happened.
Continued re-infection is a sign that you;re not totally cured yet...

RE: Stupid Question Lite/Ultra-lite/Luxury Heavy

We boondock quite a bit, so wanted the larger holding tanks in a "heavy trailer". Also do some early spring and late fall camping, so wanted the extra insulation, dual pane windows, etc. The TT is warm and quiet, but you pay a price in lousy gas mileage and by needing a HD truck to tow it. It's only 32' but scales at 8800 lbs fully loaded. Note that the GVWR is 10,000, so even fully packed I still have 1200 lbs of cargo capacity left.
Friends that we camp with have a 28' ultra-lite that they tow with their 5.4 Expedition and are quite happy with it.
It's not really a question of which is "better", it's a question of how you plan to use the TT and what you have to tow it with.

RE: New Gasser HD trucks-Horsepower Wars are On! (soon)

Interesting thread for sure....my old '01 8.1 has 105K on the needle and still runs great...I'm not running out to replace it until the girls are out of college, in a few years. I was resigning myself to buying a diesel to get the power I'm used to and then some...really not crazy about the big premium upfront and the higher maintenance costs, but what's the choice? I spent some time on the Ford "build your own" site the other day, and by the time I was done with my F-350 King Ranch dually with diesel, I was at $56,000....ouch!
I'm glad I'm waiting 2 or 3 more years to buy, I get the feeling there's some really exciting stuff just around the corner! I mean, I have no issues with a diesel per se, but I'm not crazy about having to manage either a urea tank level or regen schedule. It seems like when you have to resort to work-arounds like that it's a signal that you've gotten all is there to get from that platform, and if Ben is right, these diesels are a stopgap until direct injection gas is ready for prime time.

RE: 2nd MALWARE in two months, I can't believe it!!!

I have McAfee on this laptop, and it's no better than Norton IMO, and just as much of a resource hog. I got vundo earlier this year and it was a BEAR to get rid of...It was my own fault though....the hacker was using phony IMs from people on my buddy list. I got an IM that popped up from my daughter at college that said "Hey look at this photo of me" and there was a link to click, which I clicked on before I realized what it was. I'm usually pretty astute about not clicking unknown links, but the IM, especially spoofed as being from my daughter, caught me offguard.
The problem with Vundo is that you never really get rid of it, even after you clean the registry, every reboot it renames the registry files and reinstalls them without any AV alarms.
I now run Superantiapyware which I agree is very good and a good supplement to an AV program. Best program for getting rid of these trojans is ConboFix, which you can download for free. Only use it if you know what you;re doing, it's really easy to wipe out good registry files with funny sounding names and wind up with a mchine that won't boot.

I just keep the roof vent cracked about 1/2". That gives good vapor ventilation without freezing you out.

RE: Lippert stand-off

The underbelly on our Terry is like a plastic version of corrugated cardboard..it's a real bear to push out of place without dropping the whole panel. When I added shocks to the TT I opted to drill the frame and bolt the shock mounts on rather than weld them just for that reason.

RE: Double windows, hard to find in the US?

We got dual pane tinted windows on our 08 Terry. We ordered ours from the factory so we got everthing we wanted on it. I get no condensation at all with the heat running which is nice. Another unexpected side benefit is that they are a lot quieter...noise doesn't transmit through the dual pane windows in a crowded CG like it does with single pane.
