RE: Late night arrival......Early departure from campground

Back when we got our first "RV", an 8' pop-up. It always seemed that we camped next to someone with a diesel truck and they would get up at 5:30 or so and start it up and let it idle for 1/2 hour. Those experiences have let to my wife having an intense dislike for diesels. I tried to convince her that the new ones are better but to no avail. I much admit that I wasn't too happy with the noise either.

RE: My first accident

We have had pop-ups and a 19' TT and never had a problem towing, but when we got the 5er that all changed. Backing it into my backyard for the first time I wedged the 5er against the block wall and the truck was up against the neighbors garage (alley entrance). Had to use a sledge hammer on the block wall to get out of that one. Then on our first big trip I pulled out of the alley into a busy street and turned too sharp and pulled the trailer into a large pole. That resulted in several hundreds of dollars in damage. I'd like to say that that was the last time I did that but I did it again only this time in a campground in Alaska. I've made my gate much wider to help in backing into my yard, but paying attention is the best remedy.

RE: Dumb Question!!

I thought long and hard before replying to this subject. I feel that I've told enough boo-boos that I've done to make everyone think I must be a fool. On our first time out with the 5er I unhooked the electric and the safety brake cables and dropped the front jacks and the kingpin came down on the tailgate just enough to put two of the cutest dimples in the top ridge. Taught me a lesson (one of many that I've learned over the years with our 5er). I decided to get the notched tail gate just to make things easier and even with it I've done some stupid things (coming in at too much of an angle, not raising the trailer's front jacks enough so that when I backed up I caught the top rail of the notched tailgate, etc.). So, what this all boils down to is STOP and THINK before you do anything in the hooking and unhooking process.

RE: Reese 5th wheel rail kit install ???

On our Chevy they had to weld a spacer block to the frame so I couldn't have done that at home. Besides I felt a little safer knowing that the installer had installed hundreds of these hitches. After all a lot is riding on the integrity of your hitch (no pun intended....well, maybe a small one).

Explorer 8.0

Haven't been in the computer for several days and after going through 50 or 60 messages I came across one from Yahoo stating to download Explorer 8.0.that is supposedly set up for Yahoo. So I did. And now I wish I hadn't. It has screwed up my start up page and slowed everything down quite noticeably. Is there a way to go back to the previous version?

A funny thing happened on the way to...

getting ready for our trip with our square dance group to Bakersfield. Well, it really wasn't funny at all, it was quite painful in fact. I was installing my Reese 16K slider hitch into the truck when I felt a "pull" in my lower back. I stopped what I was doing and went inside the house to rest up a bit, but it was too late. After a couple of minutes my back locked up and I couldn't get around with out crawling on my hands and knees. It has taken me two days and a bottle of IBU Profen and a visit to the doctor to be able to walk using crutches. I hope to be able to get around with a cane by tomorrow. All this because I forgot to put on my back support and to take some moments to rest during the installation process. I've had a weak back for many years and you'ed think that I would remember to be careful, but when everything is feeling good you don't remember to use precaution for "quickie" jobs.

RE: power awning

We don't have an automatic awning, but we were camping with some friends that do and I must say that the ease of putting it out and retracting it makes me think of installing one. I just don't know it it's worth putting it on my 9 year old 5er (even though it's in very good shape).

RE: RV show disappointment

We went to the Los Angeles show last October and I commented to my wife that it looked like there were more sales people around then potential customers. We stopped to look at one 5er and the salesman kept after us about what a good 5er it was even after we said that we were just looking. He called in his sales manager and she asked if we were impressed with the quality for the price stating that it was the best $29K 5er around. I said back that she may think it's a $29K 5er, but the price was @29,995 and I call it a $30K unit. She then started to drop the price and before we finally left (this was getting to be quite entertaining) she said that we could have it for their costs and they would even finance it for 5 years. I almost hated to leave, but having just bought a new car we couldn't afford a new 5er at any price.

Just sitting here listing to....

news reports on the radio about all the car crashes on the freeways. I've lived in So. Cal. for 49 years (having migrated from the mid-west) and I still find it hard to believe that people can be so dumb as to speed when it's raining. They can't seem to understand that it takes a lot longer to stop when the pavement is wet, let alone the fact that it is very easy to skid out of control. The pavement out here gets coated with oil and rubber for about 9 months out of the year so that when the rain comes it is almost like driving on packed snow or ice. This is one of the reasons why I hate to drive anywhere when it raining, you can be one of the most careful drivers and still get clobbered due to someone else's poor driving. I don't remember that this happened back in Michigan but maybe it's just getting old(er) and items like that just don't stick around.

RE: holding tanks

You're in California which means that sooner or later you'll experience a shake. If you have a big shake and need to use your trailer to live in how will you be able to use the toilet or shower?
I store fresh water in our trailer and it came in very handy after the last shake we had. I keep the propane tanks full and the batteries charged for the same reason. I do clean out the potable water tank with chlorine once a year just to be on the safe side, however there is so much chlorine in LA's water that I really don't worry about mold growing in the tank.

RE: toilet stopped up

Luckily we have a straight drop into the tank, but I've still have to keep after my DW to add water to the bowl before use so that solids will flush down easier. Also,I always flush a little longer when I use the toilet to be sure that there is adequate water in the tank to flush everything out.

RE: So you're out camping and a bear shows up - a very BIG bear

I've seen large brown bears before but never one that big. Are you sure that the photo wasn't "adjusted" in an editing program? Our neighbors left an empty candy wrapper on their back seat in Sequoia and had a bear pull down the back door frame to get in. It made quite a mess sniffing around and then getting back out. We NEVER leave food of any type in the car when in bear country, this includes gum and candy wrappers, empty potato chip bags, etc. We started camping in tents and then went to pop-ups and finally to hardsideed trailers so we've always been concerned about this. We leave no dirty dishes/pots around and lock up the BBQ in the food locker.

Is it only California or....

is everyone experiencing sudden rises in gas prices? The station down on the corner was selling gas last week for $1.69/gal. and raised it overnight to $1.79 and 3 days later it is at $1.99/gal with talk of further increases. I thought the price of crude oil was way down, what the heck is happening? Although I should have expected this to happen. The gas in the truck is very low and I was procrastanating about taking it down to fill it up. Now I have to do it before the prices go up again.

I just watched one of the most obnoxious...

TV commercials ever. It is from IKEA and it shows a women looking at her receipt then, after looking back at the clerk, she runs out the door and down the sidewalk screeming "start the car" over and over. I feel the message is that she thinks the clerk made an error and she wants to get away before it is discovered. I believe that this is presenting an message that it is acceptable to profit from another's mistake and it tatamount to stealing. I wrote to IKEA and told them so when I first saw this commercial last year. I never heard back from them and since it is back on the air this year they obviously don't feel the same way. Am I making too much of this? Does presenting a message that it's acceptable to make money from a clerk's error even have an affect on kids? Has anyone even seen this commercial?

A couple observations regarding cell phones...

I know it is against the law to use a cell phone while driving (hand held not blue tooth), but I haven't noticed any reduction in the number of people using them in that manner. My guess is that because of the lack of police in the area (West San Fernando Valley)no body is concerned about getting a ticket because the odds are against it.
The second observation is that while we were having a cup of coffee this morning (after church of course) at the local McDonalds (I love their 68 cent "senior coffee") I observed a "homeless" man at the curb in front of the restaurant. I say homeless because he had his belongings in a grocery cart piled about 4 ft. high. Also, he had to be one of the filthiest people I've ever seen with long dirty hair and beard. As I was looking at him he reached into his pocket and pulled out a cell phone. He looked at to determine who was calling him and then put the phone back into his pocket. If he has a phone then just about everyone must have a phone.

Well, I guess that I'm going to have to admit it

I'm the one responsible for the price reduction of gasoline. For years now I've noticed that I have the power to bring a lane on the freeway to a complete stop by simply pulling into it. And I also have been known to stop the shortest, fastest moving line at the grocery store or bank by simply getting in the que, but I never thought that I'd have the power to affect the price of gasoline. I had gotten fed up with the high (and climbing higher) prices of gasoline so I went down and bought an Escape Hybrid, and as soon as I did the price of gasoline started to drop. I must admit that it's nice to be able to drive on $15 worth of gas for a month, but it's still a little unnerving to know that I have so much power........You all had better be nice to me because now I'm thinking of getting a Hummmer.......
