RE: 2008 Cougar Keystone 304 BHS Problem!!!

I have seen many Keystone issues with poor construction and leaks. I looked into buying a 5th wheel Keystone but the ones I have looked at in the dealer had leaks. Buyer beware of them.

RE: Fiberglass or aluminum siding

I agree that you can walk through any campground and find a handful of delam trailers. I can't believe that manufacturers make the fiberglass trailers knowing that a great percentage of them will fail over time. I would like to see aluminum frame trailers with aluminum siding on them for a change. I go to new trailer lots and see delam on units that they have just received from the factory so why buy them? Maybe out in the west we have a worse problem but I still will go with stick and tin.

RE: The Future Of Aluminum Sided Trailers?

I would say sooner than later most luan pressed trailers will delaminate at least in one place. I like the comment about water being the problem and that is true. Why can't they stop the leaks when they build them so they won't fall apart but so far, they can't. I am of for the wood and aluminum trailers until they can get the delam under control. Out in the west we see alot more of it than back east and from what I hear it is also from inferior glue that the factory uses.

RE: Just tell me how much it costs PLEASE!!!

I guess we would all be nicer to deal with if we "all" hadn't been taken advantage of by a dealer somewhere in life. I think we would pay a fair price for goods and services if we feel we got what we paid for. The bad thing is we get taken by the bait and switch tactics of dealers. Yes people drive for hundreds of miles to look at a unit with a price given to them over the phone to find "that unit" was just sold but wait, we have one close to that but at a little higher price. That is what sours the milk.

I would own anything that won't delam......just haven't found that one yet.

RE: Chevy 5.3 vs. Ford 5.0 or ecoboost

I would sure look at a 3:73 rear end and not the 3:42. More pull with the 3:73 and with the six speed in overdrive not that much difference on mileage. I have towed with the other ratio and it is not impressive.
Just my two cents.

RE: Aluminum vs fiberglass

I will go with aluminum due to the amount of delamination that happens with the rest of the materials. Out here in the west it seems like a majority of the hard side trailers delam. I am afraid to buy one.

RE: Aluminum Verses Fiberglass

So, what is the options other than aluminum that won't delam? I am still confused. The luan and pinched exteriors such as Keystone make really have major delam issues here in the west with our extreme heat. Some people have told me that Jayco and Forest River use solid walls that are not pinch rolled but now I find Jayco has major delam issues too. I may go back to a tent.
Thanks,

RE: Tow vehicle

I have almost 99,000 miles on mine and so far so good. I am looking at buying a short 5th wheel that weighs about 7200 dry to tow. I think I will be fine to 150,000 miles or so. My current trailer weighs a lot less but it does fine.

Delamination

I am still in the midst of trying to buy a fifth wheel and out here in the west I have seen a ton of delam issues on trailers. My question is which materials would be the least prone to delamination? I am NOT bashing Keystone but the most problems I have seen are on the Cougars out here. Is that a Pinch roll outside skin? What are the options?
Thanks for all the help!!

RE: New Fiver

My biggest worry is which material has the most delam problems in the west? Some say the heat is the problem and here, it is hot.

RE: Keystone - problem ridden?

We looked at a brand new Passport and the cabinets were mounted crooked and the floor had bubbles in it sitting at the dealer. Once again the dealer said "No problem, we can fix that". So, why is it still sitting available for everyone to look at that way? I think Keystone has lots of problems with quality. They are making Fleetwood look pretty good. Too bad they went out of business.

RE: Fivers to avoid?

I just talked to a sales person at the local Tucson dealer and they said be prepared that all trailers will have problems nowadays. Some are better than others and some are worse. Now I feel better!!

New Fiver

I am in a very uncomfortable situation looking for a new fiver. I too am looking for a shorter light weight unit and in southern Arizona, the choices are very limited. Mostly the units I can choose from are in some way connected to Keystone. There are some Jayco units to look at but from what I can see the quality on them are not very good. I have seen defects in cabinets, microwave installations, drawers, and even some of the flooring has bubbles in it on new trailers. I was in a Passport lite yesterday and the flooring was coming up in huge bubbles. The glue had released and it was terrible. The sales person said oh, our shop can make that look just like new. It is new!! and not suppose to do that.
We just have a few dealers and they seem all related with Keystone products. I would like to stay away from the pinch rolled exterior so I can avoid delamination. Some of the dealer say that the extreme heat here is the cause of the pinch roll failures. There is a Copper Canyon that has a nice floorplan but again it is a pinch roll.
I want a 27' or 28' that weighs in the area of 7200lbs. so I can tow it with a Chevy 2500HD 6.0, gasser. I have 4:10 diffs, extended cab, shortbed. Don't need the top end of things just some decent quality that won't fall apart BEFORE I take it off the dealer's lot. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Curly

RE: Has anyone double towed with a Cougar High Country?

I know this is off the subject but how do you like your gas truck towing the fiver? I have the same truck and am looking at a Cougar 5th wheel that weighs in about 7200lbs.
Thanks,
