RE: NASCAR at Homestead

Every year the fans vote for "The Most Popular Driver".
It is not a champion's status per se, but it does carry it's own prestige.
When and where does that happen?? I'd be curious to know if someone other than Junior won it....LOL!!

RE: NASCAR at Homestead

After watching the Mark Martin interview before the Sprint Cup race (and being so sad that he didn't win the Championship) - I think NASCAR should offer a "MVP" award or something to the extent that the recipient represents an "outstanding example/role model for the sport" and make Mark the first winner?
What a humble and talented man!!!

RE: Health Care

Right now, our premiums (what a perfect word - considering the price...LOL!) are over $900 per month for the two of us. No prescription/vision/dental. We tried to switch to a less expensive insurer, but my hip resurfacing (which resolved the only health problem we had) is considered a "pre-existing condition" and we were denied.
Our health insurance expense is far and away our biggest outlay every month :-( Thank God Ed can take some money from our retirement funds, or we wouldn't be able to afford groceries...although "no groceries" would probably solve the entire dilemmma?

RE: What would you do?

However nice your offer - since we don't know you - we'd decline.
And have you considered that folks might be cooking meth in that RV??? Not every RVer is as nice as you are!!

RE: Our pack is expanding, sort of......

I mentioned your new dog to Hubby - and he said we saw that breed on a documentary about reintroducing wolves into Minnesota (?) and there had been a short bit about how sheep herders were protecting their flocks. Apparently, a couple of Maremma's can thwart a wolf attack!!

RE: Proof Of Liability for Pets

We've never been asked for this kind of insurance proof - but considering that some homeowner's insurance might NOT cover dog bites/liability....I can see where more places *might* ask for it in the future??
A hypothetical example:
Maybe DOTLDaddy wants to stay at an RV Park who has insurance that bans certain breeds like German Shepherds - and as long as he has proof of homeowners' insurance that does NOT exclude those breeds - they'll let him stay anyway??

RE: white in cats eyes

I think it's just a breed trait?? I've noticed this with certain dogs, and horses, too. It's actually a breed requirement for Appaloosas - to have visible white around the eyes.

RE: Lumpy

When our old Aussie was put to sleep, our Vet made the arrangements for his cremation; but since we live 30 miles from the crematory - they just shipped his ashes to our home. So even if you had to make those final arrangements shortly before you left to return home, I'm sure your beloved friend will make his way back to you :-)
Best wishes!

RE: It's 1:15am and we're home from the Animal ER

Oh, gee, did they mention the possibility of tooth abcess? That can be nasty and involve bone. Soooo painful but dogs and cats don't complain like we do so it goes on longer. Poor baby! Will be waiting for updates and hoping for the best.
Judy
That's what I was thinking, also?? Prayers for a positive outcome!!

RE: brushing teeth

Oh boy - the chicken flavored toothpaste gets rave reviews at my house - enough so that it's difficult to brush their teeth because they're trying to lick the paste off the brush.
I have discovered that cow's ears are surprisingly abrasive and TOUGH - and do a nice job of scraping their teeth. Takes even my Cattle Dog, who can tear through anything in minutes - about a half-hour to chew up an ear.

RE: Avoid Oklahoma if retiring

Hey - come to Michigan! Compared to what I'm reading, our taxes are low-ish.... we have 4 lovely seasons; all the fresh water you could imagine; and no sharks in our "oceans". No hurricanes or earthquakes - just a little ol' blizzard now and then.
No jobs, though.......

RE: Climatologists baffled by Global warming stall

Well, the first two things the article mentions as factors are ocean currents and sun spots. And for all the chest-thumping going on about "saving the planet" - *man* has about all the effect of a belch in a tornado on both of THOSE.....LOL!!
I think we need to be as good as we can to Mother Earth - but She's still gonna do whatever She wants.... :-)

RE: Jealous Dogs???

I'm sure this sounds like a very unattractive approach to someone with a pair of lap dogs. And if you aren't that motivated, you won't do it. I wouldn't be surprised to hear "it isn't that big a problem for me" from you. But as time goes on and your dogs mature and other behavioral issues develop, you may wish to reconsider it.
Personally, I think this is important to resolve, because I'd bet 75% of grandkids getting bitten by small dogs starts here?? A jealous dog tends to get REAL jealous when Grandma is cuddling a youngster - and then the little tyke reaches out to pet the (enraged) dog and gets nailed. And once the dog learns that this pattern WORKS (now the child avoids it and Grandma) - it tends to escalate?

RE: Our pack is expanding, sort of......

Cool, Mark!! I saw a program on them years ago (don't remember where) and it was fascinating!
So if one of your BC's goes out to the pasture - does the Guardian stop him, too?? Or do they learn who has access to the sheep and who doesn't??

RE: Texan drives $1 million sports car into marshes !

This "funny" incident is most likely going to end up being prosecuted, just like the balloon-boy incident. The fact that there was someone conveniently filming it for YouTube is statistically remarkably suspect. The YouTube video also disproves the driver's original claims about a pelican.
The driver of the Bugatti Veyron has been identified being Andy House, the owner of Performance Auto Sales in Lufkin, a company that restores wrecked exotic vehicles.
Hmmm? A guy that fixes exotic automobiles for a living, wrecks one, and then get's to fix it??? If fraudulent insurance claims are made, regarding this incident, it is going to be dragged on for some time in the courts, and on the news.
That adds an interesting twist to the story - I had assumed that the fact that the accident was "caught on tape" was simply because some Car Guys had spotted a very rare sports car and were taping it just to prove they had seen one?? I mean, had that gone by while we were driving down the road, Dear Hubby would have needed a neck brace after suffering a double-take whiplash ogling something like that.....LOL!!

RE: Wounded and bloodied but.....

.....you know I've always figured that hard work and a reasonble plan would create success.
That's what's so frustrating about the current economy - you can do EVERYTHING right - and still lose :-(
Take heart in the fact that a LOT of people here care about you and wish you the very best!

RE: Discrimination against RV's bigger than 30'

The proposed law sounds silly and "selective": if it can't be over 30' nor weigh over 10,000 lbs, then it sounds like it's OK to park a good-sized TRAILER - but not a similar-sized motorhome???

RE: Need help with my dog- barks while on the leash.

Even though I am a proponent of no-bark collars.... if a dog is ON A LEASH and you can't stop him from barking - well, there's some training that needs to be done first. Like making your dog obey a command like "quiet"; or "sit" (because I'll bet he won't do that either, when he's barking?)
And in response to another post - I FIRMLY believe dogs understand English. Heck, my Cattle Dog evens understands questions like "do you want me to get your shock collar?" ;-)
