RE: Generator Exercise

Space heater here also and if heat isn't needed turn on the electric water heater, run the vacuum, just about anything will do the job.I turn both heat pumps on, one on heat and the other on cool and let them run. the next time I reverse the use of the heat pumps so they get exercised on both settings.

RE: Generator Exercise

built in heat strips which most RVs have. JMTCWMore don't have them than do, none of our last 5 RV's have had them and they're NOT enough load to heat the gen windings up enough.

RE: Priced Tiffin 32BA

discount off list is only for cash deals. you're in the fuzzy middle. your rig + difference is what counts here. Not really, on our DSDP the list was 211,500, paid 154,500. You figure the discount. And, as you said: only the difference counts. Here in WA you only pay the sales/use tax on the difference when you trade in. Buy outright and you pay the tax on the whole price.

RE: 37 or 45 degree flare tool for LPG connection?

Are they a double flare? I always thought propane lines were, maybe not?

RE: Ever Been Asked to Leave?

Not really kicked out but did get a "courtesy parking ticket" in Seaside OR. Pulled in to set up for a cat show, absolutely no signs saying no RV parking. when we came out later there was the "ticket" saying the area was signed no RV parking. I went and looked up and down the street, took pictures of the signs that were there. Sent an email and the pictures to the city hall. They clearly showed no signs prohibiting RV parking. They STILL maintained it was signed, I sent a reply and asked them to point out the signs in the pictures I sent. Never got an answer. Was back there this summer for another cat show (stayed at a KOA this time, what a rip off) and looked again, STILL no signs!!

RE: When to replace tires...

Our Michelins are dated about 4701 so they're about 8 years old. Still look pretty good but I'll be replacing at least the fronts before spring.

RE: Parking on Asphalt

These are the Goodyear G670 RV specials that are VERY expensive $300+Ours are over $550 each. I'd be GLAD to only pay $300 each!! Ours sit on gravel most of the time. I like someones answer when this was asked a while ago. They use Arizona sand in it's natural setting!

RE: 340 cummings DP

fuel "thinner" Actually called anti-gel. It lowers the cloud point of the fuel. The gel is actually parafin that solidifies at lower temperatures. You can also fill the tank with winter blend fuel which is #2 diesel with #1 added. You DON'T want the fuel to gel in cold temps!! The fuel has to be warmed (RV towed to an indoor facility and heated for several hours) or more anti-gel added at the fuel filter and tank. Not something I'd want to do alongside the road in that cold a weather.

RE: Debt Collection Calls

Or tell them that the guy they're looking for has died. Or just hang up. Tried all that after my parents died within a month of each other. Got hundreds of calls, some even on Sundays. After three years they finally quit. Same thing after my step daughter died, none of it worked. My wife talked to one agent and told him her daughter had died and he hung up on her. Even got calls from collection agents about my son. One even had the ba--s to call back and yell at me that he knew my son was there and I was protecting him. I got the phone number off the caller ID and spoke to the agent's "supervisor". Told him if that SOB ever called me back my attorney would file suit. Never heard from them again.

RE: Buying Class A - how to start narrowing down Manufacturers

Go to www.rv.org for the RV Consumer Group and read their ratings either in their books or CD. You might spend $25 or $50 for such information but it might save you much more in the future. They usually don't even see, let alone inspect or drive the rigs they "rate". I can read a sales brochure as well as they can.

RE: Beaver Santiam question?

Rolltider11, this might be a shot in the dark but if you turn your headlight switch to the left, does that turn on your map light? On our coach, we have a separate switch for each side to turn on the maplight. Hope that you find it. MM.Our DSDP's have been that way, except the light is mounted up almost to the ceiling and each light also has it's own switch, but you have to have the light switch turned on (kind of like the old dome lights used to work). Then I added a goosneck map light for both driver and passenger that the top of the metal shade turns for on or off.

RE: Convection Microwave oven?

Hi monkey44, You mean that thing below the cook top is an oven? I thought it was for storage *grin*. Convection/microwave ovens will function well if there is shore power--or if you have a "super size" battery bank with a large inverter. Or you run the generator. We have an 8.0 Kw diesel so no problem powering the oven. We haven't had an oven in the last two MH's, have the GE Advantium 120 in the present DSDP. Gained two nice drawers for storage and never even notice that we don't have a gas oven. The gas ovens they put in usually don't heat evenly or to the correct temp, and just don't work very well. Wife would rather have the storage

RE: Montana LLC sales tax excemtion

Hayman2, You are going to get a lot of misinformation on formation of an LLC please give Bennet Law Firm a call and they will email you all the information for YOUR situation. $1000.00 for Bennet to set up your LLC is the going rate. Keep in mind that not only will they set up your LLC but will be managing your LLC to ensure your Montana license plate and registration is paid and sent to you before expiration. Now your LLC will be established for the sole purpose of owning, aquiring and holding motor vehicles and will NOT be a business for profit LLC. You DO NOT need a CDL or pay any kind of Special Road Tax, Fuel Tax or other special taxes your motorhome will be the same as any other motorhome on the road. Some states out west like Colorado, Oregon and California has been targeting THEIR residents LLC's as a way to avoid taxes. If you do not live in these states you have no worry. As far as being stopped by Law Enforcement just because you have a Montana tag is just another scare tactic, as long as you have proper registration and insurance you are good to go. I know motorhome owners that have their motorhome in an Montana LLC and their towed cars have registrations and tags from their home state which are totally different than Montana and they have never been stopped or questioned over a period of many years. Now insurance is another matter since you are insuring a vehicle held by an LLC with a "garage" address in another state. This is not a problem for most insurance companies but, make sure you tell them that the vehicle is in an LLC. I understand that insurance rates on LLC owned vehicles are a little cheaper when compared some high cost insurance states. So best advice, talk to a Montana attorney to get the true FACTS and see if a Montana LLC is right for you and your situation. I hope this information helps you in your decision. And I have an actual ruling from WA state where a couple ended up paying some $25,000 in taxes and fines as well as community service when they (and their attorney) formed an out of state LLC to evade paying sales/use taxes on a MH. It's some 23 mb so it takes some time to download. I'll post a link to it when I get my laptop going. There was also a story in FMCA magazine about CA stopping MH's that were owned by an LLC and hadn't gotten a fuel sticker as required by law. Also, some insurance co's won't write a policy for an LLC unless you buy a commercial policy and they are usually more expensive than a regular policy.

RE: Furnace won't lite. Any ideas?

It won't lite even with shore power.Well, there's the problem: You're trying to "lite" it rather than light it! :B :B :B

RE: 340 cummings DP

I have a new 340 commings DP motor home. Is (are) there any problems with letting it set for several months at a time? No, Cummins says that if you can't drive the rig for at least 30 min at highway speed not to bother starting it at all. I got this in writing in an email when I requested it to answer another question such as this.

RE: Need aux brake advice

29 US states have it and a breakaway cable as required. Then there is the insurance companies that won't pay claims if you are not in compliance with state laws. The brake will stop you in 20% shorter distance which is about 80 feet at highway speeds, a life or death distance. You are probably looking at a chart showing a "compilation" of the laws, but it's only true for trailers. In some states motorized vehicles being towed are not "trailers" as defined by the law. BUT, you are required to have proper eqipment in EVERY jurisdiction you are in, there is no reciprocity on equipment laws like there is for drivers license. So if you travel to a state that requires them you need to be in compliane with those laws too, no matter what your home state says.

RE: Need aux brake advice

We are getting our Class A and toad outfitted to pull 4 down. We will be pulling a 2010 Chevy Equinox weighing approximately 3800 lbs. Our installing dealer advises against an auxiliary braking system since they know of some instances (gave me names) where the brake locked up and it did major damage. Their argument is that unless we are going into Canada, for instance, the MH can handle 3800 lbs. Even though I like my dealer, I would like to hear from some of you about this. Have you had that happen to you or do you know of someone it has happened to? Do I really need to go through the expense or installing a braking system? If so, what do you recommend and about what should I expect to pay? I notice there is another question concerning brakes that was just posted, but it does not really answer the question I have asked here. Thanks for your help. You are a great resource of knowledge to me. DFd and WorkHorse REQUIRE supplemental braking if the towed weighs 1,500#'s or more to keep the warranty in force. On a Spartan the limit before needing aux braking is the GVWR (NOT the GCVWR) as that's all the brakes are certified to stop. Most states do NOT require brakes on a towed, but I've never heard anyone say "I've got too much braking and stopped short of that car ahead. If I didn't have the brakes I'd have hit them instead of missing them!" If you find the rig accelerates slower with the toad on then you'll find it stops slower too.

RE: Where do I look for the high powered DC-AC inverters?

If you're going to use the inverter much you will need to find a way to mount 6 volt deep cycle batteries, not 12 volt Marine or normal car batteries. The deep cycle batteries are completely different inside, thicker plates etc. Our's are 7½ years old and still doing just fine, a starting/marine battery might give you 2-3 years and not ever have the capacity the deep cycles will. None of the better brands of RV's use anything but 6 v deep cycle unless they go to an AGM battery.

RE: ScanGauge II for rear engine Freightliner

Deen, you didn't by any chance get that at Minot ND at the FMCA Rally did you? 2004 or 2005 I think. That is where I got mine.Nope, never been to ND with the MH, think it was at the Bend OR one in about 2003 or 2004.

RE: carfax.com vs govdmvrecords.com

Carfax is IMO a worthless waste of money. .Plus, unless they've changed it lately, they don't do MH's. Carfax is only good if the repair shop is tied into the system and reports the repairs. Otherwise it's useless AFAIC.
