RE: Panic - dry camping and fridge use !

I love my old Dometic 3-way! No electric needed when on propane... So fortunate, I had one of those and an ancient old convection heater in my '78. No power required.

RE: Dometic Fridge emits Ammonia odor

If you're sure it's the unmistakeable smell of ammonia, then your fridge is toast. The cooling unit needs replacement. If you do some searching, look for the "Amish" unit replacements, they are better than new. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyCh7aXveow&hd=1

RE: Seal off fresh water line to toilet

If it's the generic plastic type compression fitting, yes, they make plugs that simply screw in. Don't go hog wild with the pliers, just a bit more than finger tight.

RE: Tandem travel trailer / fishing boat

It is entirely dependant on each State's road rules, some allow towing another item behind travel trailers and 5th wheels, some do not. I do believe for those that do, the 2nd item must have it's own brake away braking system, etc. Now for the crunch, I really think your going to get hammered trying to tow all that with an F-150.

RE: Trailer wiring...

MUD - you might as well run three more wires from the trailer cable junction box to the inside of the trailer and add the RUNNING LIGHTS switch. Then you can light up your trailer sitting in the camp ground... Dont quote me but I think the GREEN wire in the trailer cable junction box is the RUNNING LIGHTS cable. Well at least we'll have something to aim at until he turn s the lights off.

RE: Need to fix awning support

I did something similar for front and rear. Mines an older '87 and maintenance was not outstanding by the previous owner. The lower brackets were loose and longer lag screws/bolts did nothing. I fabricated a couple of brackets from angle iron. One 2inch wide piece of angle iron about 4 inches long to go behind the existing lower awning bracket. It sits behind the original and curves under the outside wall. Underneath of this piece is a longer piece(about 14 inches) of 1 x 1 angle iron that runs toward the trailer frame. It is bolted through the floor at 2 places, use big fender washers inside. At the trailer frame end is another piece of angle iron bolted through the frame, one bolt suffices. Nuts, washers and bolts are stainless if they ever have to come off. The angle iron was painted with tremclad, slow the rusting a bit. So far after 4-5 years nothing is moving.

RE: DODGE

I have a different opinion of my Dodge. My son in law is a partner in a Chevy dealer. He wants me to sell my 06 CTD out right so he can get me into a 12 D/A package LTZ. I too am now thinking of scratching the uncontrollable itch ! The Dodge is a nice truck but I had to put $1700 in the front end and just did brakes all the way around with 82k on it. And the Chevy is a really nice ride compared to what I Drive ! Scratch Scratch Scratch ! ! ! Looks like your son in law is an outlaw, all he wants to do is make money selling you something you don't need.

RE: Dutch Oven Liners

Comes in a long skinny box called aluminum foil..;) Probably not the quickest, but with some effort you can fold the foil to fit the bottom of the pot with enough leftover past the upper edge to make a cover.

RE: Rodent Free Winter!

We have seen trailers in the big storage parking lot where the mice gather the bounce sheets together, shredded them and made nests. If you didn't have mice, it's because they either couldn't find an easy way in or there were none to start off with.

RE: RV Dealer Charging Finance fee - really ?

I just found out from my RV dealer while my TT is in production, that I cannot sign the finance papers until he has the VIN number. He also told me that there is a $800 one time finance fee that the RV dealer charges. This is the first time I heard about it ? is this new ? Has anyone had to pay this fee too ? Thanx.. Richard.. As part of signing, I would let the dealer know that you have a one time administration fee of $801 that the customer charges for having to put up with dealers. Hold your ground. Don't be a sucker. Walk out the door, there are many others that will gladly take your business.

RE: Mileage....yeah, I know.....

What you're looking for doesn't exist yet. What you really need is a 1/2 ton pickup with a diesel. There's been talk of Ford putting out a diesel F150. I'd love to see it, but with a diesel you usually lose payload. The 3.5L ecoboost that Ford is producing now comes close to what you're looking for as it gets around 21-23 MPGs, but with a camper that would be reduced. In your situation a diesel van conversion would probably be better, but that would give you 2 motorhomes. Oh they exist but they'll never be seen the US and unfortunately not further north either. Why... your oil companies wouldn't make enough money selling fuel.

RE: 12v water heater element

Fisherman, I do believe that you missed this point, ;) EXCESS POWER, in meaning, and just for talking and as a example, I am NOT talking about being effiecent or anything else, only meaning I am using EXCESS power that would not be used, to obtain a better result that will lessen the amount of $$$ comning out of my pocket. Tia, Don No problem, I understood that quite well, however, the excess power available, is only available during "solar" hours. So as someone mentioned, say it takes roughly 3 hours or so to recharge the batteries, beyond that we now have excess power. Okay for the remaining solar hours you can heat the water. Once the solar hours diminish and you want hot water, you're back to propane or suck an awful pile of "juice" from the batteries to do the job. Maybe with a bit of tweaking..

RE: 12v water heater element

Do posters really read and understand about what the OP is talking about? :h This would be a way of using this EXCESS power from the solar panels that would be other wise wasted during the summer months and could possibly be used during the winter time also, depending on the solar setup thay have. Well you sit down and calculate how many amps it would take to heat water using solar power at 12V DC. At 120V AC, a 1500 watt element takes about 15 amps, at 12V DC, it would take about 150 amps. Now you figure out how many watts of solar panel is needed. That gives you an indication of why stick house electric water heaters use 240AC or you'd be running wire the size of a fire hose.

RE: Who is Jamie Oliver? What's in the food we eat revealed.

Don't get me going on this 'organic' hooey.:M Just means all the bugs and diseases haven't been killed. It is nothing more than a huge marketing scam to separate the gullible from their money. Without fertilizers and pesticides there would be a lot less food available. My stepson's mil raises lambs for market, they get their fertilized food and supplements the normal way. She then sends them to the recycled hippies on the Gulf islands for fattening, they come back as Saltspring Island official genuine organic for a fat profit. She is laughing all the way to the bank. Back to topic, Jamie is a hoot to watch and comes up with some good ideas but does get carried away at times. Been eating a few too many of your stepsons fertilized lambs, eh? It shows.

RE: Different Produce

I wonder if it doesn't have anything to do with all the genetically modified stuff made by "what" company from "what" country? Sometimes people have to look in their own back yard.

RE: Ford 6.7 debacle just gets crazier

Metals are classed as Ferrous and non ferrous. Non Ferrous metals are aluminum, copper, lead, zinc and tin and are non magnetic and are usually more resistant to rust but not corrosion. Don Rust is just another word for corrosion that occurs in ferrous metals. Of course non ferrous metals don't "rust", there's no iron in them.

RE: What advice can I get using my first Diesel engine?

:? I just can't understand why someone would not simply trust the owner's manual and do what it says. Mercedes has a vested interest in providing good accurate information to their customers. Their engineers know better than anyone else, including members of this forum, how to care for an engine they designed. Amen, they don't cut down trees, make paper and print manuals they include with the vehicle just so people can get "opinions".

RE: What advice can I get using my first Diesel engine?

I call BS on that one. Rotella, Delo or Delvac will work just as well as synthetic.None of the above are approved for the engine that this thread is about. Use of oil that doesn't meet MB spec 229.51 risks failure of the DPF, which is an over $1000 repair. AFAIK all of the approved oils happen to be synthetic. Amen Wayne,;) lots of people babble about stuff they know JACK about.
