RE: Cloudland Canyon and Tallulah Gorge Georgia parks

Another vote for Cloudland Canyon...beautiful park. Both are great parks, but I like the campground at Cloudland Canyon much better.....also love Fort Mountain SP.

RE: Georgia on my mind

We absolutely love our GA State Parks and have been to them all except two...haven't been to Seminole or the new one, Chattahoochee Bend, but we have been to all the rest...We've always found the parks to be very well maintained with great campsites....And many of them have 50 amp (we don't need it)and a few have cable tv and sewer, which I couldn't care less about, I don't expect that in a State Park...We enjoy that many of the Parks rent boats, we recently returned from Stephen C. Foster and being able to rent our own motorboat and tour the Okefenokee was awesome !! We've loved every park from the N. GA mountains, to the canyons, to the coast and will visit them over and over again...even in the hot summer :B It would be hard for me to name a favorite. Jennifer

RE: Shoal Creek Campground in Buford, GA?

I live one mile from Shoal Creek campground and used to camp there all the time when it was run by the Corp. of Engineers...it used to be a great campground...however since Lake Lanier Islands took it over, we don't camp there anymore...first, they greatly increased the prices...but more so, because they don't keep the park as clean as they could...anytime we go for a walk there, people have left their trash, we can come back a week later and the same trash is there...it's just not the same as it used to be...that being said, Shoal Creek is still a much better campground than the one at Lanier Islands in my opinion, and I think you'll be fine in October for the wedding...Shoal Creek is a wooded campground with nice lake views and we always see deer walking around....the best campgrounds in the area are the Corp. of Engineer parks and they are not open in October....there is a nice Hall County Parks campground, called River Forks, also on Lake Lanier...it is open until December, but would be maybe 20 minutes from Lanier Islands, so not nearly as close as Shoal Creek. Hope this helps, Jennifer

RE: Jayco 21M

Can't understand why they would quit making the 21M...we have the "twin" of it, the Starcraft 217RBSS, made by Jayco....it is definitely the roomiest floorplan because of the super-deep slide. That slide-out is the only reason we were willing to go back to a HTT, because of the amount of space it offers....the whole "slide out is too heavy" is silly to me....the ROO 21SS has the same super-slide and sells like hotcakes an it's a foot shorter than ours...we definitely don't consider our camper to be heavy and after two years of using it a LOT we are glad we didn't go with any other floorplan....we LOVE the super deep slide-out, that's what makes it !!!!! Huge inside...I'm disappointed they quit making it, the dealers around here couldn't keep them in stock.(and for the record, around here, the price of the Jayco, Starcraft, and ROO were pretty much the same, around $18k)

RE: Camping in North Georgia during bad weather?

We are supposed to get a LOT of rain here in N. GA...anywhere from 5 to 10 inches possible...we cancelled our Labor Day camping trip for other reasons, but I am glad we are at home right now..today we rode through a local State Park and there were several people packing up a day early and heading home, but many were not....if I'm camping and it happens to rain, no big deal, I enjoy it.. but if I KNOW it's probably going to poor down rain most of the time, I personally don't have much desire to go and would rather stay home..the rain doesn't bother me as much as the heavy winds, especially under the large trees in the mountains....but Fort Mountain is a terrific State Park....Jennifer

RE: Georgia State Parks / No Site Specific Reservations

In GA I guess I will just find a reasonably priced cg and book that That's a shame because you'll be missing out on some really great State Parks in GA. As I mentioned, after camping at all GA State Parks but 3, our experience has been that the sites in the majority of parks are very large and capable of handling any size rig. There are very few parks that are difficult for large rigs....I am so glad we got rid of our big 5th wheel because always having to worry "will we fit" took some of the fun out of camping for us...I enjoy knowing we can fit in any site any where...and as for the previous comment "when Georgia finally notices all the empty sites across their system, they'll eventually catch up", well, GA just opened a new State Park and is opening another one in 2012, so it doesn't sound like they have a problem filling campgrounds..the parks are popular and I'm thankful for the GA Parks system....Jennifer

RE: Georgia State Parks / No Site Specific Reservations

So if you pulled into a CG that takes site specific reservations and found a bunch of tenters and pop-ups in 40ft sites (even one of your prime sites) you would be ok with that? They paid the same as everyone else shouldn't they have the same options? I agree 100% !!! They have just as much right to those sites as anybody else. They paid the campsite fee and should be able to camp in whatever they choose !! In reading some of the previous comments it sounds like tenters, pop-ups, and small campers are expected to by-pass the best sites "JUST IN CASE" somebody towing a rolling condo shows up....and when I reserve "specific" sites at local COE parks, they don't tell me "where the trees are located".....and someone mentioned Vogel State Park...they have some really nice sites on the creek...we went last spring and got one of them..I believe that if you could reserve those specific sites, they would be booked all the time by the same people making it difficult for the rest of us to ever get them....This has been debated over and over, I just feel like nobody should have to "settle" for the small sites just because some people choose to have huge rigs....these are "campgrounds", not "RV Parks" and I believe everyone has the right to use all sites in the park...and I am glad GA has no plans of changing the current system...just my opinion.

RE: Hooking Up

I also bought a wireless camera as a gift for my husband...I got him the "swift hitch"...I know many people wouldn't spend the $$, but I have no regrets...He no longer has to see my crazy hand signals :) and now he doesn't have to get out of the truck several times...now hooking up is just as easy as our previous 5th wheel was....we didn't "NEED" it, we hooked up previous TT's together for years, I just wanted him to have it and it works great..even has a night camera for hooking up in the dark...Jennifer

RE: Georgia State Parks / No Site Specific Reservations

To be honest I kind of like it the way it is. Me too !! I am glad I don't have to pick a specific site that I know nothing about...I love being able to ride and pick the one I like from what's available...We have been to every GA State Park except for three and except for a couple of parks in the mountains, we have never had a problem fitting into any site at any park even when we had our huge 5th wheel....I hope they leave the system as is....Jennifer

RE: most attractions around a Georgia State park

Dawsonville--Kangaroo Conservation Center. This is home to 100's of kangaroos and you can take a ride down thru with a guide. We loved it. Unfortunately, the "Kangaroo Conservation Center" is closed to the public for 2011 according to their website. I am so disappointed, I have been looking forward to going there.

RE: most attractions around a Georgia State park

I agree with FDR State Park, so many things to visit in the surrounding area, as mentioned above.....my favorite place is the GA coast (also mentioned) Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, Fort Frederica, Fort McAllister, in Savannah Fort Pulaski...so much history and beauty..we go every year and never tire of visiting....for waterfalls, I also agree with Vogel State Park, beautiful.

RE: Palomino vs. Jayco

Our mattresses(and probably most hybrids these days) are 60 x 80 so standard sheets and mattress pads fit fine. Kind of hard to describe, but as you know, the tentage is permanently attached around the base of the bed frame(we really like this feature)...but at the corners, there is that small opening (shown in your picture).....this is really the only place water could enter...we don't know for sure, but it seems that water is able to enter our seal and it is running down and getting into those small openings...it only does this on our rear-bunk...we have only washed our camper twice and both times we have gotten water in the back bunk....our camper is stored in a shed so can't tell you if it would do it in the rain but probably would....we are always careful to make sure all canvas is tucked in and not blocking the seal when closing bunks, so that's not the issue...we feel like the back door doesn't close quite tight enough in the middle to fully seal...I haven't read of anybody else on here with the "new" system having any issues except myself, so hopefully I am the only one...Jennifer

RE: Palomino vs. Jayco

Heated mattress pads are a cool option too if you plan on doing some fall/cold weather camping. For the record, Jayco has meated mattress pads...the pads can be taken on and off of the mattresses....we opted not to get those because they seemed bulky and would have to store them somewhere when not in use...instead, we bought our own heated mattress pads from walmart.com and they stay on the mattresses year round...can't feel the wires, very comfy...when we were shopping for campers we didn't care for the mattresses that had the wires already in them, found them uncomfortable.......and also for the record, that little slit you showed in the beginning of your post of the Jayco canvas.....everytime we wash our camper, when we open the bunk, water gets in thru there...so it is not a perfect system that Jayco has (our camper is made by Jayco)..the "latest and greatest seal system" still isn't perfect....Jennifer

RE: Crossroads TT

We have owned two Crossroads (Cruisers)...we had a TT and a 5th wheel...both campers were great...we honesty had no problems with either one and the ONLY reason we don't still have our Cruiser is because we greatly downsized...if we return to a larger camper, I sure hope to get another Crossroads product...very well made....Jennifer

RE: has anyone given up on slides?

We've had 3 campers with slides and have never had an issue...I've never felt the need to post "my slide worked great this weekend"...I wouldn't have a camper without a slide.

RE: Jayco 21m

The dealers tell me it didn't sell because it was too heavy with the big slide That's funny because it's not a very heavy trailer...dry weight on ours is 4650...dry weight on the ROO is 4182, it's not like there is a huge difference, the ROO has the super deep slide-out and is a big seller too ...the way I understand it is, Jayco uses a different frame and it weighs a little more (not saying I am correct, just what has been posted on here numerous times before)...also, I know Jayco now allows Starcraft to make their own floorplans instead of being "clones" and I thought I read on here that the floorplan was going to be under Starcraft and no longer under Jayco ?? In other words, they still make it, just not under the name "Jayco" ?? I don't know ?? We appreciate the extra weight since most of our camping is on a lake out on a point that can get VERY windy.. and after towing a 31' 5th wheel, there is very little difference in gas mileage of the 5'er vs. the HTT..All I know is, even though we have some regrets of returning to a HTT, we have no regrets of getting this floorplan, it is huge inside....Jennifer
