RE: CDL

A CDL is not required, nor is a health card, for personal RV use, no matter how big, heavy, long etc. Even a Class-A motorhome with air brakes does not require a special license or endorsement...though I think it SHOULD be a requirement with a very large vehicle or when towing double. I AM a CDL holder with doubles experience and all endorsements as well. And as someone already pointed out, many (most, actually) states do not allow towing doubles, so you would need to check with the laws of the states you plan on driving through. Good luck and happy camping. I can't wait to get out this spring!

RE: Regular tailgate on 5ver

Like most have said, yes, you can certainly leave the factory tailgate on. It will cause no problems whatsoever. Just make it a part of your routine to lower it before pulling away, and putting it up after you are hooked up. Some tips on making this a part of your routine are (and you can come up with your own, of course): Once connected, visually verify the pin is locked from behind, then close the tailgate afterward. Before you disconnect, unplug the cable, drop the tailgate, stow the cable or roll it up or whatever you do with it, then lower the landing gear. As a 'newbie' to fifth-wheels, if you start with a factory tailgate, and develop a certain routine, like what I described or your own steps, you will not have any problem. The problem comes in when you have been used to a 'V-gate' where you get 'lazy' by not having to drop the gate. Whatever kind of tailgate you have, enjoy the unparalleled pleasure of being out in nature, with all the comforts of home when it's time to turn in. I know my back can't take sleeping on rocks, LOL.
