RE: Grand Canyon from So Cal - Friday Night Blitz

If you can't make it all the way to Williams, and just want a place to park and sleep...Ash Fork also has a big open parking lot. Going east as you will be, take the second exit and come back into town. Take the first left after the convenience store, the open lot is a block south of that intersection. Easy back on to the freeway after you rest a while. Also a good greasy spoon breakfast restaurant right next to the lot. It opens early.

RE: Just when I was getting happy. It dies :(

An electric fuel pump will help if vapor lock becomes an issue, but probably 1000's (millions)of 454's never have them. It is indeed a long run from the gas tank to the engine, but a good-working mechanical fuel pump will usually have no problem with that. A kinking fuel line is common upon removal. You can fabricate a new one out of the same material, but an easier way is to keep or replace the metal fittings that go into the carb and fuel pump and replace the rest of the line with an appropriate sized rubber fuel line hose. There will usually be rubber hoses at several points in the fuel line anyway. Be sure its designated fuel line or the gasoline will eat it from the inside out. Double clamp all the connections if you go the hose route. All parts easily available at your neighborhood auto parts store.

RE: Just when I was getting happy. It dies :(

I had a 84 Southwind which would have the same 454 engine as yours. It is possible for fuel pumps to go out in stages... the diaphragm in them gets weak or fails. Some just quit altogether, others pump enough to idle, but are be driveable, seen some pump just enough to driveable for varying lengths of time until a load is put on them. That load might be going up a hill or it might even be making the u-turn. That your rig runs after you crank the starter for a few minutes is also indicative of a weak fuel pump... it runs out of gas to the carb, then you pump it enough to start it again. If it is just weak, it will pump fuel, just have you have seen, but it will not be enough to run efficiently and shut-downs would be common. Now, you could have some kind of ignition problem or fuel clog problem as has been suggested, but most likely you will find it is the fuel pump getting weak. I also seem to remember that it was just a given that Chevrolet fuel pumps of that vintage lasted only about 50k miles. They are simple to change and are not very expensive at all. The only difficult part is the shiny rod that you will find when you remove the fuel pump. It runs off the cam and actuates the pump. It will fall down and you will not be able to install the new pump. One solution is to put a glob of grease on the top section of the rod and reinstall it. The grease will hold it in place until you install the fuel pump...the grease will also be quickly dissolved upon startup. I always carried a spare fuel pump in mine. Cheap insurance and 20 minutes work. Good luck.

RE: Destination TN+ east for Fall - BUT where to be in August?!?

Go back to Idaho, Montana and Wyoming or head north and then loop down in late September. There is not any place in Texas during the months of July and August that will be the least bit cool...not even on the Gulf coast. I say that even though I love to visit Texas, I'll be there in October myself.

RE: Parks around Antioch, CA

The unfortunate part about the fairgrounds in Antioch is it is near a high crime area. Not just theft either. Antioch is currently experiencing higher amounts of drive bys and other violent crimes, mostly in a neighborhood near the fairgrounds. Didn't want to hear that! Hope the DW doesn't read this.

RE: Parks around Antioch, CA

Thanks for the replies...the Fairgrounds are close to where we need to be, we are going to try it. Might be a little loud on Saturday night though...heard the races were in town. Maybe I'll just see what they are all about. Thanks again.

Parks around Antioch, CA

Does anyone know of a full hook-up park within 10-20 minutes of Antioch, CA. Has anyone stayed at the Contra Costa Fairgrounds?

RE: locked out of Suburban

Did the same thing just last week. One call to a membership auto club and 20 minutes later I'm on my way. "Slim Jims" work great.

RE: Converting Tow Dolly to Trailler

Would the motorcycle fit from fender to fender instead of front to back? Perhaps over the axle or reinforced channel iron just in front of the fenders. Seems like I have seen a modified dolly with that kind of configuration. They were able to tow a car as well, although I am sure the tongue weight was affected.

RE: Blue Angels offbase practice site in El Centro, CA ?

Used to live in El Centro and saw them every year...seems that back then the practice sessions originated west of the base. One could watch from most anywhere west of Seeley and be able to see some of the maneuvers. And SidKaye is correct... it is a great and patriotic sight.

RE: Good Sam Trip Report

If the interest is just in the fuel prices and you don't care for Good Sam...Iphone has an app named "Gas Buddy" which will tell you the prices of gas/diesel just about everywhere. Very simple to use.

RE: San Diego to Quartzsite

For my tastes, 95 out of Yuma is somewhat better. On 78, I seem to remember lots of curves and areas where the highway had quick ups and downs due to the many washes in the desert. If you have a tendency to motion sickness, you will most likely experience it there. 95 is mostly a straight shot from Yuma to Quartzsite. But, both are good roads.

RE: Any residual value in replaced tires?

Sell em on Craigslist... I put them on the list with the disclaimer of being older tires with good tread, and was inundated with folks who needed them.

RE: route thru L.A.

I also prefer the 405... but keep an ear to the radio tuned to 640 or 1070 as either route can get backed up fairly quickly.

RE: US 10 to California in Winter

You should have no trouble on I-10. But be aware that in January, there is a high possibility of fog in the Central Valley from Bakersfield to Fresno, seems especially so around Kingsburg, but can be a problem at any point south of Bakersfield and then north into Fresno. The fog can be very thick in lower lying areas of hiway 99. Traveling that stretch of road is safest after noon and before it gets dark.

RE: Hwy 40 through Flagstaff,AZ & Hwy 58 in CA in winter

We always take that route from Fresno going east to Amarillo. Never had any problem on 58 with snow or ice...but as was stated both could be present during the few storms that come through there. If your chosen route takes you through Grants or Gallup, you could get stuck, we spent two or three days in Grants during one storm. As also mentioned 40-50 miles either side of Flagstaff can get icy. That area is well covered in the weather reports available. If you are coming in late January to Fresno... be also aware of the fog that is often present from east of Bakersfield to Fresno. It may be worse than any ice or snow. Welcome to Fresno... you'll like it here.

RE: Changing the layout of our bunkhouse

Can you take the paneling off the opposite side of the fireplace? you could then insert it in the filled in area and it would match on the kitchen side. Then you could install new paneling on the whole wall to replace what you removed. With the bunks covering most of it, it would not be too noticeable if at all.

RE: Changing the layout of our bunkhouse

Is there enough floor space for the dinette if you leave the separating wall with TV and fireplace as it is presently oriented, then fill in the wall either to the left or right leaving the remaining opening as is? Could the bunks be placed along the back wall with the dinette directly behind the fireplace/tv wall. I can't tell how big the area is overall to know if either of those ideas would work.

I-20 parks

Headed to Lindale, TX on November 13th... any recommendations on parks on I-20 between Big Spring and Weatherford? Not exactly sure where I'll be in that big area, but it would help as to where I stop if you folks have some favorites. Just an overnighter, so don't need resort type. Oops... just noticed I posted in the wrong forum. Sorry.
