RE: No brake lights or signal lights
Check your tail light bulb sockets for corrosion and clean if necessary. It sounds like a ground problem, so if you have one take a volt ohm meter and check each socket case to frame ground.

RE: Smart Phones, IPhone or Droid?
iPhone in use here under Verizon contract. I am very pleased with all it does, most of which I just do not require.
Heard good results from a cousin who had the Droid and he likes is well too,
What ever you pick make sure it fits your requirements as close as it can.
