RE: Question about towing and Puma/Tundra

The thing about towing in the mountains that no one has mentioned yet, particularly the Rockies with their MUCH higher altitudes than the Smokies is that a naturally aspirated motor (non-turbo diesel) will lose from 3-5% of power per 1000' of altitude... Some passes in the Rockies are near or over 12,000' (Loveland Pass = 11,990', Independence Pass = 12,103') so your 5.7L motor could be down in power as much as 60% when crossing a 12,000' pass... I towed Loveland pass 2 years ago with my truck and trailer and I was down to 20MPH in 1st gear crossing Loveland with my #9400 TT, and that was with my modified V10 making 360 HP and 500 lb ft of torque!!! Your TT could gross as much as 11,137 pounds if loaded to max GVWR and you have significantly less motor than I do... IMO, too much trailer for too little truck - Rocky Mountains or not... :( Les

RE: Bikes On Front Of Truck/If You Do, How Do You Like?

I carry 2 and sometimes 3 bikes on the frontof my truck (see signature photo)... I did cut down my Swagman Twister bike rack by about 4" to lower the bikes out of my line of site... Works very well for us... Les

RE: pullrite hitch

Take a look at the photos below... Notice that the spring bars are locked firmly into the hitch head via pockets in the head and at the far end of the spring bars, there are square head set screws which put the bars under tension laterally... The combination of these two lock the trailer coupler to the ball and force it to pivot at the king pin just aft of the differential... Disregard the comment on the photo regarding shims - that was another Pullrite topic of days gone by... Les http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Misc%20Photos/shimdetail.jpg width=640 http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Misc%20Photos/PRHitchwdbars.jpg width=640 http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/47971/1075508900047062602S600x600Q85.jpg width=640 BTW, I have towed with the Pullrite, my current Hensley, and several different types of standard w/d hitches, and I personally consider the Pullrite hitch to most stable and overall best hitch of any hitch made today... RE: Thousand Trails / ROD break up

ROD doesnt own anything. They are a company that makes bargain contracts with rv park owners, operators and the like. Then they sell their contracts, for use, to the companies that take your money at a reduced rate. WOW - sounds like the RV version of derivatives :E :E :R ... Les

RE: Motion Induced Blindness

Interesting theory, however, being an avid motorcycle rider for many decades and still being here to talk about it, my take on it is a lot of has to do with drivers simply not paying attention - and it is far worse today than it was in years gone by... While it is true that a motorcycle is a much smaller vehicle than a car, my modulating headlight on high beam and modulating (flashing) brake lights are designed to grab the attention of all but the most serious brain dead drivers... Still, many motorcyclists are killed by moronic drivers not paying attention... Take the case of the Illinois female drive that killed a motorcyclist waiting to turn left - the female driver of the car was "painting her fingernails" and "didn't see" the motorcyclist!!! I call that inattentive (negligent) driving!!! The woman should have gone to jail for years and yet she received only an 18 month sentence and served her jail time in the evenings after work!!! What a sham!!! http://archive.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/07/woman-who-did-nails-and-caused-fatal-crash-gets-18-months-in-jail.html Les

RE: Are trailer manufacturers unionized?

Unions had, and still do have their place... Many a UAW worker made, and makes a good living thanks to unions... Unions themselves are not responsible for jobs leaving this country - chalk that up to Corporate greed... I was only a union member once many years ago and I must confess the Union didn't do much for me, but like jules6 said, if you think your employer would give you all the benefits they do and Unions had nothing to do with it, your living on another planet, especially in today's world with Corporate greed being at an all time high... It was Unions that brought you a 40 hour work week, medical insurance, paid vacations, and many other things you now enjoy in your job... I have to laugh a bit at those who scoff at the Unions and how they "take away" your money in the form of Union dues and give it to some political hack... Those saying this probably also took advantage of the "cash for clunkers" program - not that it had anything to do with Unions, but you would probably complain about the politicians giving away your tax dollars until you took advantage of the savings... I personally know of several people who did take advantage of those savings and then had the gall to complain about the program... The way to build a quality RV is to have high quality labor force with an incentive for zero defects... With corporate greed being what it is today, even if you could talk a manufacturer into a scenario like that, the RV would be priced so high, no one would buy it... I see this all the time in Chicago where Union members are forced to give up wages and benefits allegedly because it's their wages that are responsible for high trade show costs, but the show distributors and owners give up nothing to bring show costs in line with other cities... Like I said, I was never much of a Union employee, but the reason all our jobs went off shore is plain and simple Corporate greed - don't blame it on the Unions - it just isn't so, and Unions of yesteryear are responsible for many of the benefits you enjoy today in your RTW shop... Without their gains of the past, you would very likely be working for a bowl of rice and few bucks a week with no benefits at all, and if you don't believe that, you are quite naive... Les

RE: Was not aware that RV factory workers paid piecemeal v. hourly

When we were at a Jayco Factory tour - 2-3 years ago, we saw Jayco people building 5er's and the tour guide commented: "as soon as they build 11, they can go home for the day"... Oh, and BTW - there were many Amish men on that assembly line slapping those units together - bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, went the staple gun... Amish craftsmanship - yeah right!! :R I doubt that the RV Industry will EVER see meaningful quality control unless a Japanese or other off shore company comes into the US and decides to give them a run for their money in terms of competition - just like they did with automobiles!!! RE: To Park or Not Park

Well, I'm also one of those who truck only sees towing duty and the occasional hauling task like black dirt, fertilizer, moving my daughter, etc... My truck is a 2000 model and has 50K miles on it, nearly all of that towing my trailers... It sits in the garage nearly all winter and has only seen snow once in it's lifetime so far... End result - a nearly pristine truck (and I mean PRISTINE) with 50K miles that is now 12 years old - - and I fully expect to get at least another 10 years out of it... With the price of trucks in the $50-$60K category for a new one, they are out of my price range on my retirement fixed income... My daily driver (when I do drive) is a 2002 PT Cruiser bought about 6 years ago for $7900... As far as I'm concerned it was money well spent and has saved me a ton of money not having to buy a new truck... Just MHO :W Les

RE: What's your experience with a Suburban 1500 as TV?

The entire 3/4 ton brakes vs 1/2 brakes is laughable in my opinion. If your truck stops different when towing your trailer then you have trailer brake issues or you need to turn up the gain on our brake controller. OK - and that's on a "good day" and assumes your brake controller is adjusted 100% properly and that it never will fail... What do you do on a "bad day" when your brake controller fails and/or the umbilical cord pops out of the connector and you have no trailer brakes coming down one of those hills you mentioned, and now your truck has to control and stop that #7000 behind you??? Can't happen you say??? Don't bet on it - it's happened to me and many others on this forum... And if it happens to you, you had better hope that those 1/2 ton brakes and chassis are large enough to handle the load without trailer brakes... You design your rig so that the unforeseen can be handled, and not if everything works perfectly all the time with no margin for error... Telling someone it's OK to overload and/or tow over ratings, or even inferring that is just plain bad advice, and is a large disservice to everyone reading this forum and especially the newbies that do not know any better!!! I haven't tried the Dometic but why is the low battery light flashing if there isn't a low battery :H And regarding the red wire not being used - what difference does that make??? Mine has been that way for 13 years and 2 trailers :R Les

RE: HEY we need a sticky for our TT pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

some day the forum software will do this itself and we can save the mods a ton of time re-sizing photos... the image post on a couple other forums I am on, just asks for the url and handles the size automatically... O Boy - I would kill for forum software that does that :B ... Seriously folks, I have said this before and will say it again - the easiest way to re-size photos is to simply insert the statement "width=640" after the .jpg extension in your IMG syntax statement... Make sure you include a space between the end of the .jpg statement and the width statement... The forum software will re-size your photo to 640 pixels wide and properly size height as well automatically... See example below...
