RE: 1990 Ford 460 FI major power loss

There was one incident a few weeks ago that I forgot to mention. This was before the tune up. With the engine previously hot, I started the van and began to drive and the engine stalled and would not restart for 10 minutes. I tried cranking it while on each fuel tank with no luck. I almost drained the battery from cranking it so much. Finally after 10 minutes it started and never did this again. This perhaps could be another indication that the high pressure fuel pump has failed. Okay, that's exactly what I wondered about. You need to replace the fuel tank selector valve. Ford had a recall on those 90's trucks when many came in a dual fuel tank configuration. In 2002 received a recall notice from Ford on my '93 F150 requiring the truck to be brought in for replacement of the valve. The letter mentioned the faulty valve could cause vapor lock or lack of fuel flow. My guess is your selector valve is sticking causing a constricted opening and reduced fuel pressure. Under normal town driving it will be fine but under heavy load the restriction hampers fuel delivery and causes power reduction. Contact a Ford dealer with the VIN and see if the replacement selector valve has been installed under warranty/recall. If not, ask them if they will do it under recall. If they refuse then climb under the body and replace the valve. KJ

RE: what's true

Even if they are 'supposed' to self adjust, can you be completely certain that they are. Automotive drum brakes are self adjusting, but I have found them pretty sloppy sometimes. I'd suggest taking 30 minutes to jack up each wheel and verify they are properly adjusted. It won't hurt a thing and will give you peace of mind. KJ

RE: How do you secure your breakaway cable to your hitch?

I don't connect it to the 'hitch' at all... ;) I connect it to the bumper of my truck that is not connected to the hitch in any way. The idea being that if the entire hitch fails, there goes your break away attachment point right along with the hitch! My cable does not go thru the chains either... It's on it's own and does not drag. Same here. I have a threaded chain repair link hooked through my bumper. I hook my safety cable to that just like Mitch so there is no connection between the hitch and the cable. KJ

RE: 2008 Sierra 2500 HD Exhausted...

Yep, OEM exhaust on these HD gas engines is pretty free flowing. Check with your local muffler shops and see if they have kept an OEM system they took off. I had a '97 Chevy 1500 I bought with a ridiculously loud dual exhaust. The previous owner took it to the shop the week he bought it and had cat back duals installed. The shop had that system and many others stored up in the rafters. For $175 the shop took off the glass pack duals and reinstalled the OEM. KJ

RE: Help with new truck.

09 chevy silverado 1500. 5.3 engine 3.42 rear end. It is high mileage, 98000 miles. It has is 4 speed automatic. They are asking 18995. First off a 2009 Chevy will not have a 4-speed auto. In the last half of 2007 they went to a 6-speed tranny. Even when mated to 3.42 gears the 6-speed gave pretty good torque and towing ability. 98K miles is way too many for that asking price. Keep looking and you'll get a much better deal. There are too many trucks out there that are much better deals than this. If you can live without 4X4 (and you can easily) there are some great deals out there. '09 Ram 1500, 39K miles, $20K '09 Chevy 1500, 25K miles, $17,500 '07 Chevy 1500, 36K miles, $16,800 KJ

RE: Relocate GM OEM 7 Wire Connector

That's exactly what I did with mine except I used a generic 7-way receptacle that only needed a 2" hole. It's clean, looks great, and gets the connector out of the way and prevents it from getting clocked. KJ

RE: Lifting my trailer

My trailer has perches welded from factory on top and bottom, should make the task fairly easy. Oh geez, you have it easy. A floor jack and some jack stand should be a you need to make the switch. KJ

RE: Lifting my trailer

I was wondering if the common way to get your trailer a little higher was to flip your axles to the other side of the leaf? The reason I ask is because I am constantly scrapping my rear jacks. I am towing the trailer level so that's not the issue. Just purchase 2 of the Dexter Axle Flip Kits and install them. If you are not aware, you don't physically "FLIP" the axle. You simply lift the trailer, remove the leaf springs, and install new spring seats on the top of the axle tube. If you were to flip the axle over it would cause two problems. 1) The designed arch in the axle would be upside down and cause flex problems. 2) Your brakes would not work properly. KJ

RE: Equalizer Install/Fear Not Ye Fellow Newbs

......dealer...$650 and change for the hitch and $150 for install..... OUCH!!! Off to the interwebz and got one for $469 and then off to a buddies house today for an extra set of hands. 1) Read the manual 2) watched the video on youtube 3) and off we went to start. The driveway we were using was about an 1/8 bubble off level, so we leveled the trailer using a tape measure to level it in relation to the surface. .....need a 1 1/4" shank and my ball has a 1"...off to NAPA. The directions said you may use a bushing, but for peace of mind I spent the extra $14 bucks ,,,,,, Manuals? We don't need no stinking manuals!!!!! Just kidding. You did very well to read up and do this yourself. Also, kudos for spending the few extra bucks to get the 1 1/4 shank. It is definitely worth the peace of mind. "Leveling" a trailer is almost always a bad idea. You will find very few lots, roads, driveways, etc. that are truly level. You did the right thing by making the trailer frame parallel to the driveway and taking measurements from that point. Good luck and happy trails! KJ

RE: Wheel chock recommendations

I made a set of rotochocks using 1/2" pipe, woodworkers pipe clamps, and some leftover 4X4 pieces. All told it was about $25 and they've worked great for 7 years. KJ

RE: Am I crazy, or....

I've heard of Liquid Propane injection for the go fast diesel boys to give extra ponies on the drag strip. But, I've never heard of CNG used as a diesel supplement, let alone using it exclusively. It definitely looks like PickupTrucks.com got this seriously wrong. A look at the Venchurs web site shows their system is a Bi-Fuel Conversion for F-250 and F-350 Gaseous Prep 6.2L engines.. WOW :E How did this writer get it SO WRONG. Man, it almost sounds like the writer was just some English major that didn't know a muffler bearing from a rotator splint! KJ

RE: Question for a friend

Common issue is fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator.. Add that the fuel filter and pump are also common issues Definitely the likely culprits. Tell your friend to take 15 minutes and change the fuel filter. If that doesn't help check fuel pressure to see if the regulator is faulty. If all else fails, replace the fuel pump. I have seen several GM trucks of that era where the fuel pump got weak then finally died. In fact, I wouldnt be surprised if the Pump in your friends truck has already been replaced at least once. KJ

Yeah. I have a rusty rear bumper that needs replaced but it is paid off and it still runs great. That us a wonderful truck in my book. KZj

RE: Long/Heavy TT owners and towing

Step 1 is to replace your receiver. ..... It looks like he already did that.. I saw a post on page 1 about a new Draw-Tite reciever rated for 15klbs or so... Oops, I missed that one. I was reading through all the posts to see if that had been done but apparently didn't see that info. Thanks for the heads up.

RE: Long/Heavy TT owners and towing

Step 1 is to replace your receiver. Your GMT 800 truck uses a poorly designed receiver that is prone to flexing. The excessive bouncing you feel is due to it flexing under the strain of the WD hitch. My '04 had the exact same receiver as your truck and I had all kinds of see saw action pulling my 34' TT when I went over bridges ans RR tracks. I installed a Curt magnum V receiver and adjusted the WD hitch and the bouncing was gone. KJ

RE: Convincing my father in law - Dangerous towing.

......Kind of like my dad, I ask him why he doesn't wear his seatbelt and he tells me that he doesn't have to because Indiana state law doesn't require you to wear one in a truck, :S:h...... My dad was the same way. That really was (is?) the law in Indiana. I know they exempted pickups when the seatbelt laws were first enacted, but I think they have been revised and that exemption was removed. I'm glad Skid, with the help of his BIL got gramps to see the light. I really hope I don't get that stubborn in my old age. There are certain values and beliefs that should be held firm and others that should be buried. But when it comes to safety and mechanical abilities, if there is an advance that improves these we must embrace it. It sounds like gramps was being stubborn just for the sake of being stubborn. Thankfully an army of reason got through to him. KJ

RE: should yave done my weight homework.

I'm in shock right now. Last year when i bought my 1 ton,...... Extended cab, long bed, 4x4.......So, my cargo load is only 1800#...........its a one ton, it'll pull anything...........sell the bumper pull and buy a 25ft fiver. "I have a one ton. I can pull a 40ft if i want." .....my trailer is 4600# dry. . At 25%, my pin weight is 1200#. 400# for me and my wife, 200# for the hitch 200# for my truck box, right at their cargo load before adding any gear to the trailer ......I guess I'll be looking for a 2500HD or a small 3500 next season. So you bought a 1 ton truck? What make, model, and year is the truck? Is it a gas or diesel? A 2500HD will have lower rear axle rating and GVWR than a 1 ton. Also, a 3500 is a 1 ton. I think you're looking at the wrong numbers. On the driver door or door pillar should be a sticker. What does it say next to the GVWR? If your truck is a single rear wheel it should be in the area of 9600#. I can't think of any 1 ton trucks that only have 1800# of cargo capacity. Please answer the questions regarding what truck you have and we can help you a lot more. KJ

RE: 20003 F250 V-10, spark plug change

I agree,,, let the dealer do it. Personally, I have a hard time paying $500 for a job that only includes $50 in parts. But, if you're not comfortable with the task let someone else do it. However, I would check with other independent shops. Dealer service rates can be pretty ridiculous! KJ

RE: Newby looks for advice (Jayco)

Our Jayco with standard insulation does just fine with outside temps into the 30's. We frequently camp in early spring, late fall and the furnace keeps up just fine. The ducted heat and A/C systems do a very nice job of keeping the temp equalized through the whole TT. KJ

RE: 2004 Dodge 3500 srw?

Yep, walk away. I've seen a lot of young guys driving diesels in my area. They are lifted with stacks through the bed. The biggest thing is the kids drive the $5!%#^ out of them. Basically these trucks are the new hot rods. Camaros, Mystangs, etc are taking a back seat to diesel power. If it were me I wouldn't buy one that's been tricked out like this. It's way too likely it's been run like a mule. KJ
