RE: An unscrupulous dealer strikes again.

Ford doesn't help any with the fictitious 11,200lb tow rating. It's not "fictitious", it's FORD !!!!!!!! Given the way the truck market works, in a few years GM and Chrysler will improve their trucks so they can do the same!!!! Then why don't you run out and buy one and get an 11K fiver to pull? Its not fictitious. It is just one parameter. There are a lot more things out there to tow other than just RV trailers. To match a combo you need to examine all the parameters and not just the tow rating. What often happens is that one sees the highly advertised tow rating and assumes everything else is fine. They are often unaware of the other parameters. The unscrupulousness starts when the dealer fails to mention the other parameters. In the end the dealers are often irresponsible for what they don't say. They fail to advise the consumers to do their homework. Instead they hand them a pen and point to the dotted line, without really analyzing or verifying the parameters of the proposed combo. Yes it is ultimately the buyers responsibility to do their own research however the dealer has an obligation to protect the consumer as well. Maybe I should have said fictitious for a travel trailer. If this rating was for a TT the owners manual would not have frontal area limitations. Sure, take a bone stock truck, a 150lb driver, 0 extra lbs in the truck and you could haul a load of bricks as long as the tongue weight doesn't exceed 10%. Maybe a better term would be unrealistic. I agree that those large max tow ratings can be misleading and are based on ideal conditions. Furthermore they are generally not applicable to RV trailers or those with a large frontal area. But I do imagine there are non RV trailers that will fall into the max. tow specs. AS RV'ers we need to beware and pay attention to all of the towing parameters. AS stated above knowledge is power. Knowledge is the best way to avoid becoming prey to the deceptive advertising and sales tactics used in the RV world

RE: Maximum allowable 5th wheel hitch weight

Thanks All: Truck Specs: Truck net Wt. 7,262 lb GVWR: 9,900 lb Front GAWR: 5,200 lb Rear GAWR: 6,100 lb Combined wt. of occupants and cargo: 1,830 lb GCWR: 23,500 lb The maximum occupant load would be ~ 700 lb Maximum anticipated trailer cargo load ~ 1,500 lb It appears to me I would be on the edge of my trucks capability. Something is a miss with these figures If GVW is 9900 and net weight is 7262. than 9900-7262=2638 available payload. Where does the 1830 figure come from? Is the net weight your trucks empty curb weight figure? Dry weight of trailer 12,346+1500=13846 loaded 20% of 13846= 2769.2 pin weight+ 200 pounds weight of hitch = 2969.2 2969.2 is no passengers no cargo in truck. 2638 (avialable payload)- 2969.2 (pin weight with hitch)= -331.2 -331.2 -700 passengers= -1031.2 or 1031 over your GVW. For me those numbers show the trailer exceeds the parameters of the 2012 F-250.

RE: Maximum allowable 5th wheel hitch weight

Looking at 2012 Ford Specs. It appears the F250 crew cab 4x4 has 3070 pounds of payload. 15,805# GVW and 20% pin weight=3,161# 3070-3161+200# hitch =-291# before you add any passengers or cargo. 2 things to consider. Will you load 2912# worth of stuff into trailer? The payload of the F-250 will decrease some based on any options the truck is equipped with. Best case scenario F-250 will be at the edge of its limits. with that trailer. A F-350 SRW would be a better choice, A F-350 dually would be the best choice for towing without any payload issues.

RE: class V w/weight distribution hitch

The receiver and WD hitch are for too different purposes. The receiver is simply designed to attach the trailer to the truck. A WD hitch is designed to transfer (distribute) the tongue weight of the trailer to the front axle of the TV and trailer axles in a effort to relieve some of the tongue weight from the rear axle of the TV. A class V receiver will allow heavier tongue weight to be attached to the TV. A WD hitch will still be required in most cases.

RE: New CW's

Opinions vary. Have been to many. I continue to see things terribly overpriced. Have always done better elsewhere. Didn't know about the Affinity thing though, Thanks... There is no dealer in our area that has the selection of camping accessories that CW has at any price. While I agree CW prices are generally on the high end there selection is superior to all of my local places. The internet has a place in all of this, but if you want to see an item before you buy a brick and mortar CW has its place also. Some of my local dealers are better than others but for in your hands selection CW cannot be beat. We have nothing within 2 hours that compares to a CW for purchasing camping accessories

RE: An unscrupulous dealer strikes again.

The part that bugs me most about the "heavy half" trucks is the very limited tongue weight the factory-installed hitches will carry, usually 10% or less of the maximum tow rating. Yes, you can pull 11,100 lbs. but you can't have more than 1,100 lbs. on the tongue (this is from visiting dealers reading the stickers on the hitches on crew cab models). There isn't anyone that makes an aftermarket receiver for a 2012 F150 that exceeds the manufacturer's factory installed one. Assuming this is true. The tongue weight becomes a very limiting factor. 8000 x.15=1200 / 8000 x.13=1040. I was not aware the F-150's had such a low hitch rating. Not very good if your trying to use there enhanced payloads to tow a TT..

RE: New CW's

CW? Camping World's? There are already approximately 100% too many of these stores out there.... Sorry Affinity. Can't agree with that, maybe if there were more, we wouldn't have to pay shipping, just walk in. Wish there was one in the Richmond area. I'd take one in MD as well.

RE: NYC Visit campground needed

Another possibility is Croton Point Campground. A 45 minute train ride to the city, but good recommendations at RV Park Reviews. The train station is within walking distance of the campground. Croton Park is a option, However it is very close the the train station but I would not call it walkable. I 'd guess it be a 11/2 walk. It is also about a 11/2 train ride to Grand Central Station. Liberty is a better option, It is closer which translates to a shorter, cheaper commute to NYC. What you save in camping fees you may spend on commuting fares. Croton will give you a better camping experience. Liberty will give you a better NYC experience. Both are worthwhile campgrounds.

RE: Who owns a propane generator?

We have a factory-installed Onan gas powered generator on our Jayco 321 RLTS, so I don't know why they are telling you it is propane only for factory installed generators..... I have an Open Range not a Jayco. There policies are obviously different. I did not select my 5'er based on the genset or the type of fuel it required. My only requirement was that it had a built in genset. Fuel source was not critical. I now actually have the unit and the propane seems to be fine. Time will tell.

RE: dealer run around

and to the OP, please please please do not be disheartened or put off by this discussion & guidance. I really wish i had gone through this before buying too much TT for my TV... Byran Good Point. Many don't realize that the info is designed to help them avoid the angst, heartache and headache that many have experienced already by choosing enduring wrong combo

RE: Who owns a propane generator?

I have the 5500 onan - nice but all of these are thirsty so what is the real reality? At a gallon per hr you ain't going far True but not everyone needs to run eight hours a day,5 days straight. Many only need to run genset 2-3 hours a day. The advantages of propane being clean results in more reliability. Propane as a fuel source avoids having to add additional fuel tanks. Propane has its pros and cons

RE: Camper drain pipe question

It's ABS pipe, you can get it at Home Depot ect. Ok, thanks!! I actually looked for it at my local hardware...but they looked at my like I had two heads. Must not be much of a hardware store. ABS pipe is common...used in residential homes, commercial buildings etc. Use ABS pipe, fittings and get ABS glue.......your new valve will be ABS and so will the slip-glue flanges you will need. ABS is not readily available everywhere. You do not see it in MD. PVC is the pipe readily available here. I imagine it varies by region.

RE: dealer run around

is the7800# dry or loaded weight ? you have written both. If it is dry forget it trailer is too big. If it is loaded weight you will be on the edge, however their still maybe payload issues to consider. In the end I think the trailer will be too big for you current truck. Don't force the issue get right the first time. experience has taught me it always cost more to get it right the 2nd time

RE: Campground Etiquette - pass-throughs and back-ins

No etiquette involved. If you want to pay for a larger site go for it. you pay for the convenience, popularity, and size of site. The size of your rig is not an issue. In time you may find the price of the convenience is not worth the expense. Those with larger rigs have no choice but to purchase the larger site. You may have cheaper options. In the end its all first come first serve no etiquette involved.

RE: Any ideas for safe boondocking in DC area?

You are not really going to be able to boondock in the area. It is, however, cheap to stay at the Greenbelt National Park. It is also very safe there -- that is where National Park Police Headquarters is. Do a Google and check out their website. X2 your best bet for cheap safe/secure camping in DC

RE: Ego Boost Engine

.... believe you would only come out ahead when not towing with the F150.That's exactly the point; cause like many others that's exactly what I am doing 95% of the time - "Not Towing". What he is also implying is that you will fall behind when towing!

RE: Estimating Hitch Weight?

A typical TT should carry between 12 and 15% of its ready to camp weight. Since you dont have that number use 15% of the GVWR as your base line. Why is everyone so into GVWR? How often does anyone actually load that much. For instance my actual empty weight is 6300# and my GVWR of 10600#. There is no way I will ever get even close to that GVWR so why in the world would I ever use it. Thats because you have a net CCC of 4300 pounds most TT do not have that much cargo carrying capacity. Most are less than 3000 pounds. Some are as low as 1500-2000 pounds. Bottom lines is the ratings vary considerably. One needs to weigh and calculate their own parameters for their own situation. Assuming you will be similar to the other guy is a big mistake.

RE: Did you know Newmar pays their factory workers $30+/hr

Hourly wages are only relative to the region your in. $15-$26. maybe a decent wage in Muncie,Indiana. Not so much in San Fran or NYC. Metro Areas generally pay significantly more, however there is significantly more stress and the rat race is that much more intense. Housing is more expensive. Rural areas generally pay less. There is less opportunity and a little less stress. Pay is relative to location. Choose your poison

RE: Use shade-tree body shop? or full-blown collision center?

Did you really whack the truck or is the damaged minor. The decision should be easy from there. Your truck is brand new, why are you willing to compromise the repair on a new truck. I agree with others if the truck were a beater I'd approach repairs differently. But a new truck needs to be repaired correctly. Furthermore a truck that new is generally required to have full coverage, unless you paid cash of course. If I recall is this not your 2nd mishap or are you referring to the same one? There is no need to go shade tree if you are paying for full coverage. Kind of defeats the purpose. Something about this scenario does not make logical sense:h Maybe it's just me?
