RE: New or used for a newbee

I'm assuming you have the knowledge to inspect camper and understand all the systems and features? I also assume you know how how inspect for leaks and delamination.
Assuming used units are in top shape.
Mobile Suites and Cameo are in a league above any Jayco.
Cameo is no longer in business Mobile Suites is in business.
I would lean toward the Suites. Be sure you have an adequate TV the Suites are heavy. A 1 ton dually is usually the minimum requirement

RE: I Guess Camping Is Different Here....

One of the great things on RV.net is you get to virtually experience other camping styles and other destinations.
MD has nice variety of camping available. I am 1-3 hours of beach camping, lake camping mountain camping and everything in between. Full hooks,no hooks ups we pretty much have it all.
Maybe not the greatest of any particular type but the variety of types is all here.
To the OP as others implied take the drive/adventure and exploring is all a part of it. There is another forum member Burbman who just moved off of Long Island. He traveled all over from Long Island.
Don't trap yourself behind those dunes Expand your horizon's there is a whole world of campgrounds out there! One of the best features of any RV is the wheels!

RE: spare tire change

I understand the OP 's post but honestly he should have known better despite the reply. Like asking if my rig needs a battery will Good Sam install it for free. Well sure but it is understood you will to pay for battery.
I see this post more as a misunderstanding of the question (which maybe due to poor training) more than a GS poor service issue.
The OP's question was poor.
Furthermore the policies are stated in writing to avoid this type of confusion.
GS is simply a national network of Independent roadside service providers.
YMMV with each provider. The service is far from perfect but it is much better than being in the middle of nowhere not knowing who to call.
I think many need to adjust their overall expectations of nationwide roadside assistance.

RE: two generators or one?

Portables are not a bad idea. But they will need to be set up outside of your rig. They will not be able to be run from the storage area.
You loose the convenience of one button start.
They will all make some noise. Granted some are louder than others. If going portable I would definitely get a quiet inverter model My 5500 Onan is not silent but it is not lawn mower loud either. I prefer. convenience over any type set up,loading, unloading, gas tanks etc.
I think the difference between portable and built in is more about convenience than noise.

RE: Tankless water heaters

With a tank heater the cost of heating is included in my campsite. With a tankless heating cost is additional. Loss of DSI capablity is a step backwards not forwards.
Include hot water vs. additional cost? Easy decision there,.no further analysis required.
My 10 gallon tank heater will give me enough hot water to take as long shower.
I do not need to take Navy showers.
A tankless heater in a stick home is cheaper to operate because you are not continually heating a holding tank of water, however in a RV there is no savings with a tankless. The only benefit is continuous hot water however I can get the same continual effect with my 10 gallon DSI without the added cost and complexity.

RE: Tankless water heaters

My tankless heater waste water in my stick home because you have to let it run a bit to clear pipes of existing water until you get hot water. In a stick house this is not an issue. On full hook ups this is not an issue. However when running off fresh tank or when no sewer is available water conservation is an issue. The water passed until hot water is available is and issue.
This passed water is essential a waste it drains fresh tank and fill gray tank unnecessarily...
And the same doesn't happen with a tank type water heater in an RV? I seriously doubt that any RV has the recirculating loop some stick & bricks with tank type water heaters do to keep the water in the pipes hot. You will have to run out the cold standing water in the pipes to get hot water with either kind of water heater. Thanks for clarifying what you said but it doesn't really apply to RVs.
No the same does not happen. A tank heater has hot water sitting there ready to go. A tankless system is sitting with non heated water. It does not begin making hot water until you call for it. The ambient temperature effects how long it takes to get hot water.
There is more of a delay in actually getting hot water with a tankless system. I agree there is a delay with both but where we disagree is that tankless has a greater delay. How great ? I have no hard numbers but in my stick house it can be an additional 5-10 seconds of waisted water.
A tank system retains water while it is being heated. A tankless flows instantly and sends unheated water down the line. A tank system flow instantly with hot water without delay.
When it's really cold a tankless system with slow the flow of the water to give itself more time time to heat the water
As I said in a stick house this delay is just a little water down the drain. But in a RV when not on full hook ups every drop counts. This delay translates to waisted water.

Tankless units save energy/money in your stick home because you do not have to constantly heat 30-40 gallons of water however these units are propane only for the most part. They will cost more to operate in an RV because you won't ever get the benefit of using the CG's electric to heat hot water.
While I did run out of water with the 6 gallon DSI standard water heater in my prior TT. I have yet to run out of hot water with my 10 gallon DSI unit in my new rig.
My comments do not apply to diesel fueled units as accurately as they do for propane powered units.

In the end assuming the proper gauge wire is used, it really does not matter. I imagine it is much simpler to state attach wire to battery when writing installation instructions.

RE: Limp Mode Problem on Duramax LMM

I had 2 7.3 PSD with tuners. The performance increased dramatically. I put transmissions in both of them. In hindsight I'm sure the tuners put additional stress on the trannies.
I consider it a lesson learned.my PSD 's were older generation drive trains.
With the newer engines and six speed transmissions power is already optimized. There is very little need to tinker. Particularly on a tow vehicle.
To the OP hopefully you can learn from my prior tuning history. Your vehicle is giving you signs the tune is causing problems, quit while you are ahead it can get real expensive in a hurry.

RE: Has anyone found the PERFECT bunkhouse?

My perfect TT floorplan was a BHDS floor plan . There are lots of similar models but they are generally bigger than your size limits.
You are correct 3 kids need more than sleeping space. They also need their own space to spread out and play vs. playing in the adult space.
I would strongly suggest a floor plan with at least one slide out in the bunk house.
Your 1/2 ton Suburban maybe limiting your selection, I towed with an Excursion. A 3/4 ton vehicle would give you more choices.
I understand a new vehicle may not be in the equation. But be careful to get it right the first time. Compromise often leads to the path of frequent upgrades.
Experience has taught many getting it right the 2nd time always cost more

RE: Nissan Armada Towing MPG

Figure 8 for your budgeting and go from there. You are not going to get anywhere near 9-12 as someone else suggested. You will get 9-10 on a good day (no wind) and 7-8 on a bad day (windy). Guessing you will average 8.5 overall for a long trip.
I agree. I also think that 9500 GVW trailer is a bit large for your Armada.
The hills in W.VA maybe unforgiving. Beware.

RE: Advice On New Fiver Purchase

Lantley...the OP said "a comparable fiver" and I said "has nearly the same floorplan". :h The Pinnacle is Jayco's top of the line 5er, but doesn't have a bunk model.
Hey SD no big deal, I know you were just trying to be helpful. The OR 427 is a five slide triple axle bunkhouse unit. I considered purchasing one my self, but it was just bigger than I needed. I purchased an OR 399 BHS.
I just did not think the 427 and the Jayco models were nearly the same or even comparable.
But the OP maybe interested in it nonetheless.

RE: Advice On New Fiver Purchase

2012 Open Range 427 BHS RVTrader.com shows prices of $52,900.00 Ponchatoula, LA, $54,299.00 Nacogdoches, Texas...and full msrp $76,376.00 in Florida!
At 15,600 GVWR lbs I hope you have a really big truck!
:E
Open Range is a terrific builder, gives you a 2 year warranty and has great quality and customer service.
But since you asked...Crossroads 5th wheels are higher end also...nice units from Thor RV with a lot of luxury for the price.
The Jayco Eagle 365BHS has nearly the same floorplan, for $63,000.00 msrp with every possible option, sale prices are around $44,285.00 and it is 1'9" shorter, has bigger fresh/grey/black tanks, and also a 2 year warranty.
Good luck..that 427 BHS is a really nice floorplan!
Sooper Duty The Eagle model you listed is really not the same floorplan.
To the OP. I suggest price the same model at your next closest OR dealer. Let them compete and earn your business. You may also price at an Internet dealer. I thing you can get your unit in the low 50's.
I just purchased a similar unit, the 427 was just a tad big. I suggest factory ordering your unit to get the option and features you want vs. the unit on the lot with someone else's choices.
