RE: Florence to Eugene rt OK? also chains req'd on I-5 OR?

There are NO laws requiring anyone to carry chains unless they are entering a chain area during a storm. Conscience has nothing to do with it, anyone would be well within the law to travel on dry roads in good weather with no chains. Look up the law, I found it easy by googling it, but i don't know how to post the link.
Possibly in California but not so in Oregon--

Retired on June 15th of this year from the San Francisco Fire Dept, best job in the world. Miss the firehouse, but not all the BS that goes with the job these days.

RE: Travel to Yosemite on Friday.

The forecast I just read from NOAA said 2-4 inchs in the Valley, you can expect more higher up on the route in. If it were me I would not chance it, this storm is supposed to pack a big punch but blow through quickly. Is wait and see a possibility? Saturday morning could be a whole new ball game and an easy drive in. One minute it can be snowing like crazy up here and the next bright sunshine. The roads will more than likely be clear by Saturday if this storm doesn't stall and just blows through quickly.

RE: Dad lost his job, so this family lives on the road

Don't be so hard on the guy. What was he to do?
Well, for starters....sell the expensive house and buy a cheaper one (rv's ONLY depreciate). Put your kids in school!! These folks aren't even home schooling, they're learning ONLINE!! Then, if they really still want to "see the world", buy a tent. And $300 per month? Impossible!
At least they aren't camping at Walmart. :)

I have heard that Armadillo Carnitas are very good, that would solve the problem. :)

RE: Great Basin NP

Thanks 4runnerguy for the on topic information. May won't work for us. Sounds like a fall trip for us. I'm not sure if any of the NP campgrounds can accommodate my 40' MH. Guess I should call them. The Border Inn RV Park at Baker seems to get good enough reviews to suit us. Anybody have any comments on it?

RE: Great Basin NP

There's supposed to be an RV park in Baker that's associated with a motel, but I know nothing about it or even if it's still open. If it's not open any longer, then the closest RV park to Great Basin would be in Ely. Why not stay in one of the park's campgrounds?
If you're both over 62, be sure you each get a Senior Pass if you don't already have one (the old Golden Age Passport). That will allow you free entrance to the park, 1/2 price camping, plus 1/2 price on the cave tours (only the pass holder gets the 1/2 price on cave tours, which is why I said that both of you should have one).
Major's Place has hook-ups and they are half way between Great Basin NP and Ely. The place in Baker was probably not someplace I would choose, too barren and if the wind kicks up like it usually does, it would not be comfortable.
I would dry camp in the park if I was going, other places are too far and not nearly as nice as the campgrounds there.

RE: Snow Canyon State Park- Utah

I live about 5 miles north of Snow Canyon. March is a very good time to camp there. Snow Canyon is one of the most visited state park in Utah. Suggest you make reservation. Snow Canyon is a destination in its self and should be considered for more than a stop over.
Johnna,
We were in your neck of the woods for the marathon. A friend of ours ran it, beautiful area you live in.
We were very impressed with Snow Canyon, great place for hikes and the campground looked nice. Didn't look like many big sites for RVs, with the exception of the ones with electricity up front. The ones we preferred were dry camping sites, but only a few would fit our 30' TT.

RE: Home Base after Retirement

St George is great, we were there in October. Checked out some real estate, you wouldn't believe the house prices, very good. Real nice new homes we looked at that would be well out of our range here in CA.
Good location to take off on trips from as well.

RE: Los Angeles to Twin Falls, Id

My only comment would be to fill up in Bishop at either the Von's or the Piute Palace rather than Tonopah. We took that route to Jerome last May and it was an easy drive, very scenic, and the road was good. Weather in May was perfect for this trip. I think we stayed the night in Ely before heading to Idaho. Look for the base jumpers when you cross the bridge heading into Jerome-Idaho Falls. Quite a sight.
Curious why you wouldn't fill up in Tonopah. We filled at Vons in Bishop and again in Tonopah where it was cheaper believe it or not. The Chevron on the North end of town will accomadate any size rig and they have a great travel store inside. I wouldn't have made it to Ash Springs if I hadn't filled up in Tonopah and I believe the same would be true to going to Ely. That in itself is a little food for thought.

RE: Zephyr Cove RV Park and bears....

Something to ponder, with all the Bears we have in the Tahoe area and all the tourists; how many tourists have been attacked or killed? None.
Keep the campsite clean and he won't bother you. BTW, a guy shot one recently because it was rattling his door, he went to jail.
Don't make this into something it is not. Yes be aware, careful and keep your distance from the Bears, but odds are he is not out to eat you and your wife. :)
Also, Douglas County Sheriff responds to Zephyr Cove, it isn't out in the sticks. Almost an urban area, there is no lack of 911 service at your location.

RE: Los Angeles to Twin Falls, Id

The route you asked about 396-6-93, is a good one. All of those roads are in great shape. Fill up in Tonopah, not a lot between there and Ely.
15 past Las Vegas and then 93 North is also an option and maybe more direct. Personally I would stay away from 15 all the way up to 84 West to Twin Falls. Too many trucks and traffic, 93 is a great drive through some interesting country.

Take a side trip up to Cedar Breaks if you get the chance, incredible scenery. It is about 30 minutes up Highway 14 from Cedar City.

RE: Zion Tunnel Length Restrictions Strictly Enforced

I was told that the reason for the limit is that there are several turns in the tunnel and it is all narrow, and might be hard to negotiate for some drivers. A good driver could probably handle a longer rig fine, but not everyone is a good driver. One mistake could tie up the road for a long time. We all drive big vehicles and have to expect that sometimes we can't go where we would like. I appreciate that they offer the option for some large vehicles to go, even if it involves stopping traffic while they go thru the tunnel. The fee just pays for the employees at each end that stop the traffic.
Just chill out and enjoy the ride around the south side of the park. It's a wonderful ride!
You still can't go if your rigs total length is over 50', even by paying the escort fee. That is what the OP was trying to get across.

RE: Pleasant hills ca. to bishop Ca.

Sorry to hear about your nephew. I don't know the Pleasant Hill area, but you might check for a WalMart. I would take 680 down to the 580 east and then take 88 out of Stockton over the sierras to 395. I think the pass is still open as no major storms lately. That will put you onto 395 at Minden.
88 is open all year, with the exception of closures during major storms. Those closures do not last long.
