Your trailer is not SOOO heavy, but heavy enough to consider something better than Goodyear Marathon tires. It also sounds like you may have some alignment issues, but not likely. The Marathons are shallow and 20,000 on your trailer is about right. You should consider better tires when you replace them. Michelin XPS Ribs are likely the BEST tires you could put on your trailer.....worth the money. Replace your tires at five years service.

Lake Havasu City is very nice. Not too much traffic. You can get around easily. Islander RV Resort has great things going on and is a beautiful park. *0 miles from Quartszite...a must see in January. We have a balloonfest in January, the big trade show for Fireworks in February and the Spring Breakers in March.

RE: 100,000 mile diesel

My Cummins is a 1998. It has 250,000 miles on it. I have actually towed my fifth wheels over 100,000 with the truck. My first fifth wheel weighed 10000 pounds and I towed it 40,000 miles and this fifth wheel is an Everest, 13000 pounds and I have towed it 60000 miles.
The engine has never been worked on. I adjusted the tappets at 100000 miles and they did not need adjustment...the mechanic said they wouldn't, and I adjusted them again at 200000 miles and they STILL did not need adjustments. The engine uses very little oil. I change the oil at 7500 mile intervals and it uses less than a quart of oil between changes. It has the original radiator. I replaced the lift pump and the high pressure fuel pump at 148000 miles.
The engines are bulletproof....go for it..!!
I have no knowledge about the Duramax.

You have to remember, that on a semi-floating axle, the load is riding on the axle bearing, while on a full floating axle, the load is riding on the inner and outer bearings of the hub. BIG DIFFERENCE. On a full floating axle, the axle shaft itself bears no weight, just turns the hub. Hence the de-rating. Just changing tires will not increase the axle rating by one pound....and overloading it will cause early failure.

We stay at Islander for the winter. It is a gated RV Resort and it is far enough from action at the Bridge that the Spring breakers are a non-event. Now when you go down to the bridge area it is different...lots of kids, but they are not a problem at all.....you will love Islander. Spring breakers do not stay at Islander...other than the ones that come with Mommy and Daddy.

Jarlaxle....that's quite a statement, considering the Michelin XPS Rib 235 is the best tire in the E range that is available. $301.00 per tire vs. a china bomb that will tear up your trailer big time...you must really be mad at Michelin for some reason.
Chopper Bill....was that Maxxis at $135 a "pop?"

Sandpiper ...Your rig is about the same weight as mine. In 2000 miles my Goodyear Marathons were all delaminating and two were ready to blow. Discount Tire paid me 97 dollars each for them when I bought new Michelin XPS Ribs. Maybe you'll get lucky and have the same thing happen. Just watch the China bombs really close....first sign of ANYTHING, get into Discount. They treated me right. I just bought my second set of XPS Ribs as the old ones reached the five year mark. $1382. for four tires less a mail in rebate for $70.00. AND...they put in steel stems for one dollar each and balanced them for $8.00 each. Tire price was $301.00 each. Another dealer down the road wanted $314.00 each. Discount will honor a lower price if you get a better price from another dealer. Cheap tires aren't worth the aggrevation....with Michelin XPS Ribs, your tire problems are over. Pricy though. You get what you pay for, I guess.

Flying J's vs. Loves

I have decided to switch to Loves when I am fueling up. Flying J has apparently been purchased by Pilot and Pilot thinks everyone is trying to steel their fuel. It is now necessary to go in and prepay for the fuel you are going to buy before you start pumping. So if you think you need $300 dollars worth and you pre-pay them $300 bucks on your card...and your tank only takes $270 bucks, you have to go back in,and they re-run your card with the other amount. Don't they know what an aggrevation this is? They simply say that it's Pilot's policy. If you don't like it, too bad.
By contrast Loves has a diesel pump on every island under the canopy. You put your credit card in, they ask for the last four digits and the pump starts. How sweet is that?
I suppose now someone is going to tell me that the fuel at Flying J is better....or cheaper. I know the ergonomics are better at Loves, and that's what I like.

Michelin XPS RIBS

Ordered new XPS Ribs today for my fifth wheel. (Everest 323P 13000 pounds.) Four tires 235's new steel valve stems, mounted and balanced, fee for disposal of the old tires...which are the same exact tires exactly five years old. Total $1423.00. Pricey, but they are good.

Just visited the Discount Tire Store. I have XPS Ribs (Michelin) that are now five years old on my 2003 Everest....13000lbs. He told me they are warrantied for six years...he recommends changing them after five years as they have had a few blow in the sixth year. He said because of the steel belts and 10 plies they cause major damage if they blow. After five years.....no matter how many miles...change them.

The Best Reason NOT to use thick blocks is that if you accidentally push the trailer off the blocks when hooking up, your trailer could fall on your box doing big damage. You should use a thin piece of wood rather than a block. If you have six inches between your trailer and box when hooked up, then a 10" x 10" that is two inches thick, would prevent the trailer from landing on the box if you accidentally push the trailer off the blocks.

RE: Inverter Question

Some rules to remember when installing an inverter:
1. Use the correct size battery cables.
2.Install the inverter no farther than five feet from your batteries.
3. Be sure to fuse the hot line from battery to converter...use the correct size fuse. Mine is a 1200w. Inverter and I have a 150 amp. fuse in the line. Don't pass on this because a dead short in the inverter can burn your rig down. The fuse protects the line.
I plug my shore power cable into the inverter and power my whole rig.
Isolate the big power users like fridge, water heater and shut off your converter when using your inverter. Put your fridge and water heater on propane.

A good inverter will specify the minimum cables size..AND.. the size of the fuse it requires on the positive cable. Mine specified a 150 amp fuse on the positive line.
The fuse protects the cable....and nothing can burn down your coach faster if things go wrong with the inverter. 12 vdc dead short will turn the wire red hot if no fuse is present to blow....and catch everything on fire that it is touching.
On an 1100 watt inverter, it must be in a good ventilated place, within five feet of the batteries, but not in the battery compartment. This is the most difficult part of the installation on some rigs and takes some ingenuity.
I installed my inverter so that I could plug my 30 amp cable into it, using appropriate adapters, so that I could power my whole rig with it. That was you can run the 120v. lights, your entertainment centre, and your laptop computer from your favorite chair. I can run the satelite receiver, and the Tv at the same time. You have to isolate your heavy loads like the water heater, and fridge which I switch to propane.
Don't forget to shut off your converter. On some rigs, the converter is connected hot...(without a shutoff switch)...and you may have to install one....or pull the fuse for the converter when using the inverter. When boondocking, and inverter is worth it's weight in gold. Just DO IT RIGHT.

I also had a problem with losing hydraulic fluid between the pump and the connection for the reservour. I'm glad you found an O ring that hopefully will do the job.
The cause is that there is some dirt in the system which finds it's way to the reservour.With the constant jiggling of the reservour and pump, the dirt eventually works it's way under the O ring...which I also thought was inadequate.
So I tried th RTV silicone and had another leak in no time.
Then I took it all apart again, cleaned all the mating parts. Then I applied Form-a gasket to the mating parts....put it all together....no leaks since. Have towed it 3000 miles since I did the repair.....still holding.

RE: Under rated brakes on my Keystone Everest

I have a 2003 Everest 323P and the axles are 6000 lbs.
Dry weight was 11800.
GVW is 14100.
CCC is 2300 lbs.
Loaded for the winter I am around 13000 lbs. and the pin weight is 2500 lbs.
I agree with you that the brakes could be better. If you go anywhere near real mountains be sure to have an exhaust brake (PacBrake) installed.

RE: Inexpensive inverter generators?

Generators are one place when you have to be careful. The difference in price for a quality unit like Honda or Yamaha is not worth the difference in saving for a cheaper unit. Some cheaper brand generators are a lot cheaper actually but will end up giving you inconsistent power.
In Canada, the prices for Honda are crazy....about 1400 dollars. I bought mine in Elkhart RV Surplus for 849 dollars...Honda 2000eu. might be a little more now, that was a year ago...but there are good deals.

RE: 5th wheel brands? Goods and bads...

I recently was at a DRV/Keystone dealer..(they sold both)..and I was showing some interest in their Mobile Suites. Then I crawled under and noticed they had Chinese tires. And the dealer started to brag about how wonderful they were going to be. They assume that we just fell off the turnip truck. Tires are really important with the chinese bombs coming over here and he really tried to dispute my dislike for them. If they won't put on good tires for you...preferably Michelin's XPS Ribs..(made in the USA or the UK)..make it a deal breaker. They'll soon change their minds...if they don't, walk away. Other dealers will.
