RE: Small kids in the camper

Please don't put a lock on the door that would trap him in event of an emergency. . . fire, etc.
A door alarm, wireless camera, baby monitor, all can be affordably purchased at Home Depot or BabysRus.

RE: Yosemite Valley, New Years Eve 2011

It is a tame winter. We camped in Yosemite until Christmas and it was the warmest I could remember in many years of winter camping in the park. Overnight temps in the high 20's, days were high 40's, to low 50's, and no snow . . . what-so-ever. Not even on the peaks surrounding the Valley. Instead of hiking on the snow covered trails, we rode bikes.
Beautiful, but we really need the snow.

RE: Happijack or Torklift tie downs??

You'll get a long list of responses on this one.
I have owned both and like both. My personal opinion is the HJ system is simple and works well, however the TL is a beefier setup, I would recommend their system for larger, heavier campers.

RE: Tahoe, Mammoth, Boondock Ski Beta?

Seems Mammoth is the stop, if you can only do one. I have chains for the truck but not the jeep. Jeep has no active break system on tow. I'm a little worried about going on the backside, I'm used to bombing down I5 with rain (not snow). Feel hungry for Sierra scenery and looking to give my new Aux Heat system a good test. The Desert/Mountain experience blend appeals as well :-)
Thank you for the tips. Happy Holidays!
Mammoth RV park open all year long with hookups if needed. We usually park there, top off and clean tanks and then head to the parking lot of Mammoth about 2miles up the road for skiing.

RE: New to us Host Everest

I have the Everest and really enjoy the camper.
My counter view; love the Heiki sunroof, has a screen the cuts down direct sun/heat/bugs, large opening allows big volume of air to run through camper, especially when fantastic van on in back of camper, allows me access to roof from bed, can easily adjust/clean solar panels and sat dish, real emergency exit, clearly see stars at night, clear covers actually allows you to see the scenery and weather while lying in bed.

RE: Rieco Jack Water Problem

That's interesting. Since Reico feels that the water draining hole is a needed solution to a known issue, do you get the feeling that they will be routinely drilling this hole on all new jacks being shipped out?
.
Yes Don . . . its my understanding all new jacks will have a drain hole. Doesn't it seem like the appropriate solution would be finding the source of the water entry and sealing it?

Rieco Jack Water Problem

I realize this is not a new topic, however I never got an answer when asking a previous poster what the factory said with regards to water buildup within the jacks.
I called Reico this morning and was surprised to hear they recommend without hesitation that a 1/4" hole be drilled 1" up from the base of the foot in the groove. They admitted it was a problem and stated the need to drill the hole regardless of whether I suspected a moisture problem.
The Rieco's have been a good jack that seem stronger than my previous Atwoods, however I must admit I am a little disappointed they have not done more to reach out to owners with the current recommendation. I filled out all of my registration/warranty cards when purchasing the camper in hopes manufactures can reach me in the event an important change is required.
Will make the changes this afternoon, hoping no water comes out of the jacks.

RE: TO HEAVY FOR DODGE DUALLY 4 X4??

I would say the 1160 is just too much. It's a huge very heavy camper that pushes the limits of most duals. By the time you added water, gear and family I have to believe you would be heading down the road with a 13k load on a 10k truck . . . OUCH!

Curious whether anyone has seen one up close or knows an owner. After three years I thought we would see an owner show up on RV.net.

RE: I am going smaller!!!! Chalet DS116

Just a thought .
Even if you had a 450/550 to haul the heavy chalet , do you realize you have to open up the slides in order to get inside and use the bathroom etc ? Stopping at a rest area may not be too practical.
If you burn a motor in the couch slide,or if it misaligns how will get inside ? IMO, it's not a practical floorplan. It might be to your benefit to look at floorplans where the unit can be used with slides in , if need be.
Sometimes we need to stay stealth when we park in certain places. It's kind of difficult to do that with full sails up.
if you are inside sleeping with your steps up and slides in , no one know you are inside and may pass up bothering you.
Counter thoughts;
We absolutely love having the extra room, flexibility of having slides. On our third camper with themIf motor failed they have manual crank overrideCan use bathroom by opening slide a few inches in most modelsOnce inside you can close slides for stealth mode in most modelsWe made dinner and sat nine people in our camper one night when the weather turned bad for tent campersTC's with slides simply have more options IMHO
That being said they do weigh more, and need more truck.

RE: Best 4-season TC?

It's my belief most hard-sided campers are four season. While our current camper is more winter-proofed than any other I have seen to date, its because I ordered it that way, not because it was branded the four season king.
My current Host has a dual heated basement, propane furnace with electric 12v backup, individual tank heaters 12v, variable speed propane furnace, Wave 6 wall heater, triple fuel generator (gasoline, propane, nat. gas), dual glass windows, thermal vent plugs, four AGM Lifeline batteries with 440 available amp hours, 200 watt solar system and a host of other features not related to keeping warm.
The coldest temps I have seen so far were -5 and we were sipping hot chocolate in a 78 degree camper watching mother nature ravaging the unprotected.
We also took our first Lance camper to Flagstaff in a storm many years ago and were literally trapped for two days as the snow wouldn't keep falling the wind kept howling. We had a single battery and small furnace and were still comfortable. I ran the truck for a while to keep the battery up which seemed like a small problem at the time.
My point is any camper can be modified to lend itself better to the needs of the user. We do a lot of winter camping and wanted to have systems that would economically keep the camper warm while being able to stay off the grid and and out of the campgrounds when possible.
Like a previous poster I was concerned about the triple slides being the weak link in protecting my interior from the elements. While I agree this would be the opposite of a clamshell Bigfoot with areas of potential energy loss, it has never really been a problem. Even in the coldest temps we simply run the Wave 6 during the day to conserve battery power and find that it will cook you an high and uses very little propane.
Not sure what it is about the AF that would lead you to believe its a superior 4 season camper. Our Host has more insulation in the walls, a better insulated basement and the built in furnace directs heat on all basement lines. These were items either not done on the AF, or as well, at the time we looked at purchasing the Host.
If you're a severe winter camper then I would suggest you pick one and order it to suit your needs. If not . . . it's my opinion that most hard-sided campers will do you fine.
Couple of thoughts; if you have hookups then purchase two small electric heaters, one for the basement and the other for the interior. If not suggest you leave the furnace on 55 at all times, use a small Honda generator to top off you battery before bed.
Good luck on your quest!

RE: International Terrastar.

A dealer mentioned to me, that like their other trucks, you can order a Terrastar with far more options than the Ford or Ram. Louie
What kind of options? My F550 came with air-suspension, heated/a/c seats, DVD, GPS, on-board compressor, and there was a standard p/u bed available. I am curious what else you would put on the truck?

RE: New camper delayed again

I believe the RV industry as a whole is in a fight to survive. I would imagine most don't have the ability to stock the inventory they did in the past and need to get orders to justify purchasing the build items.
I don't think we can use this economy to judge long term service from any of these companies.
