Old Truck Camper articles on Popular Sience online

LinK I always loved this magazine. :C A lot of old articles from the 60's and 70's are now online. It's amazing how many "modern" features were available back then. Some pop up TC's look a lot like todays models. DelRay campers sleep 8?. I could read this stuff and look at the ads all day.:)

RE: Fumes/smell/outgassing - Your thoughts.

From the site NorthstarCampers "BREATH EASIER That's right! You can breathe easier in a Northstar camper because we care about formaldehyde emissions. These emissions are found in varying levels of concentration in various underlayment paneling available for manufacturing. We have chosen a premium underlayment paneling tested at only .02 parts per million formaldehyde emissions at a cost more than double other available panelings that have a much higher part per million concentration. We are decidedly conscientious about contaminants and their potential harm on the proud new owner of a Northstar. Rest easier, safer and healthier in a Northstar"

RE: Laptop Traveling Software?

I used to use a laptop as a GPS until it slipped and wedged against the gas pedal. For a minute I thought I was driving a Toyota. :B:W I use Delorme in my everyday work on a Panasonic Toughbook and highly recommend it. The Plus edition allows you to import data and includes the Phone directory. I plan on installing it on my new netbook that has an 8 hour battery life for vacation travel. I probably will not even hook up the power supply while underway.

Try cooking them in a smoker with some hickory, you will never be happy with the oven method again. Ditto :B scotch eggs

RE: F350 shift on the fly

I completely agree with INSAYN. To me there is zero benefit to shift-on-the-fly and automatic hubs. With manual hubs you "know" if they are engaged, and with a shift lever you "know" if it's in 4wd. With the automatic hubs you "hope" they lock, and with shift-on-the-fly you "hope" it's in 4wd. When it comes to 4wd, when you need it, you need it. I'd rather know than hope. I've got to go with INSAYN also. My 2500HD Silverado is all automatic and I don't trust it. My F250 work truck is manual hubs and manual transfer shift and trust it much more.

RE: Anyone using the solar fridge booster?

I think you guys are missing the point. I read the OP to say that the cover needs replaced and that they are considering the solar cover as an upgrade rather than replacing the original cover. Not missing the point here ;) $138 for the built in solar vs ~$40 for a replacement cover and DIY fan and solar.

K&N Cold Air Intake 2500HD

Anyone had any experience with this? Is the 20HP gain worth $300? I feel that my lightweight Northstar is a perfect match for my stock 2500HD but I may try towing my new boat with it. Boat weighs about 2500 lbs.

RE: Crowded Page

I don't have any ads, but I use Firefox and the Ad Block Plus plugin. Bingo! Better than DVR. Don't even have to fast forward. It's automatic. Same here. One thing I miss is the next page button at the bottom. I have to scroll back to the top??

RE: Solar powered fridge fan / vent

I finally got off my butt and installed the solar battery maintainer. It is rated at 1.9 watts and runs a small computer fan quite well. The maintainer came with two cables with connectors. I simply cut off the ends, wired one into the computer fan, the other I tapped into a 12V circuit behind the fridge. Now I can swap cables and run the fan OR use it as an actual battery maintainer when off the truck. With a fan at the top of the chimney and one at the bottom, I'm hoping for better performance (colder beer). BTW I've been running around for three weekends with some foam blocking in front of the vent and so far no blowouts on propane. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/obxcamper/IMG_1375.jpg height=400 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/obxcamper/IMG_1371.jpg height=400

Blue Ridge Parkway, Peaks Of Otter Mini Report

Chance of snow showers, cool, breezy weekend. What do we do....go camping. Spent an overnite and had dinner at the Lodge at Peaks Of Otter. Was a little disappointed in the fall color. Seemed to be a lot of brown and yellow colors. Dinner at the Peaks Of Otter Lodge was great and the campground was quiet.
