RE: What do you use for rear door awning?? Pics??

Carefree products are available at most RV stores. They do not sell direct.

RE: Puncture precautions - what do you do?

I have never had a tire go off road. I did have a rock between dually tires once, both tires are shot. I do use good load range tires and change sooner rather than later. I check the spare regularly. When off road, and probably in general, I have learned to take it easy. Tools, I have a small box of tools with some bailing wire, duct tape, screws pipe strap bolts etc. Also some silicone caulk. I have seldom had to use it on one of our trucks, maybe once in the last 500K miles. I do a lot of maintenance and more preventative maintenance. I have had wiring issues on trailers, and carry a portable set of trailer lights and the usual bulbs, fuses, tape and testing equipment, pretty complete. When towing a boat trailer, I carry a trailer box, with a complete set of bearings, oil seals and bearing changing tools, gloves, grease etc. I have found that maintenance has really reduced the need for this piece of equipment but I find compelled to take it anyway. I have found more need for a fuel can, even on that I have gotten better. Good Luck. Rick

RE: Will three weeks be enough?

My suggestion is to stay in the park. Its a great park and there are plenty of things to do and see that you will see few other places. Get up early and go for a ride to see the wildlife. Go out at dusk to see the wildlife. Staying in the park will shave probably 1 1/2 hours off of the commute time. Have fun. Rick

RE: Fuel Mileage - TT/TC

About the only way you are going to really get good mileage is to go with a popup (Coleman type) camper. With our 8.1 Suburban we were able to get 14 mpg towing at 70-75 mph. It really is not worth it to change vehicles to get better towing miles. It takes such a radical change that by the time you change vehicles the money spent on fuel has gone to all of the costs associated with the change. We have a TC for mobility, flexibility and off road use. Every now and then we tow a 20 foot car hauler. Good Luck. Rick

RE: Trip Report: Fairytale Towns in Lower Franconia (Germany)

Beautiful trip! Really enjoyed it. Now the tough part: What are the specifications on that piece of cake. And, what is the red can near the rear of you camper for? Thanks. Rick

RE: tips on loading a tc...found this

Bob at Outfitter backed our truck under our camper in the showroom. He went around two tight corners and a post in a single move, it was impressive. The tip, practice, practice. Rick

RE: Looking for cheapest options on Camper Dolly's

We have a full frame dolly it works well. Its hard to push around by hand. It appears that you have a height problem, you may also have a lowering problem. My jacks only go down so far, and the TC is still a good 9 inches from the pavement. Consider using wheel dollies available at virtually all of the car equipment sites and from HF. I think that Northern Tool has them as well. If I was going to do it again, I would give this a try. A little modification is necessary for the bolt heads and probably the height. It would be easier to store. Here you go: NT Wheel Dolly Good Luck!

RE: To those pulling trailers behind thier TCs

The rig is a 2004 GMC Duramax, SB with an Outfitter Apex 8. What size do you pull? Enclosed ,open? 20 foot enclosed car hauler, 10,000# capacity. What do you use it to haul? Cars and what ever. Is it equipped with brakes? Absolutely! If you have an overhang over the pickups back bumper, how do you compensate? We have a heavy duty receiver with a stabilized extension. How much mileage do you loose with the trailer, as opposed to just the TC? A little over 1 mpg. Would you do anything different if you were setting up a new trailer? I would have bought an aluminum enclosed 20 footer, probably a Featherlite, its pricy, but more flexibility. Consider a Toyhauler, I know, but with minimal features, it could be useful when you need more space. Any tips for those thinking of setting one up? Get an enclosed trailer. Really consider your needs now and in the foreseeable future. Don't go too small, extra capacity is helpful. There are so many uses for an enclosed trailer that even after owing one for 6 years, we come up with a new use every now and then. For instance with the 20 foot car hauler, we can easily haul a car and in front put any tools, equipment and have space for the things we buy along the way. I would not buy a longer trailer just because I don't need it and its hard enough towing a low slung car hauler around, it really affects the mobility. Good luck!

RE: Washington DC area campgrounds

DC is just plain expensive. In the big picture of things $65 per night for Cherry Hill is actually cheap!! We have done it both ways, camp and stay in a downtown hotel, and on a hotel on metro line in Virgina. In the end I think staying in a hotel is more efficient, easier and maybe even more cost effective. You are where the action is. You get up in the am and walk to where you want to go, take the Metro or even a cab. You can stay out late, visit the Lincoln Memorial at night etc. You can cover so much more ground in a shorter time, two days instead of three. When time does not matter we stay at Greenbelt, but we are self contained including solar and very low electrical demand. Sometime staying in the RV just is not the best, this is one of those rare occasions.

RE: Camping in the St. Louis area

There is an RV park right in downtown STL. The Saint Louis RV Park. People either like it or hate it. Some people don't feel safe there. We have stayed at a number of downtown RV parks and they have common elements and a common feeling. If you are a person who absolutely must have green grass, trees, a bush and an idyllic setting, don't go to a city RV park, you will be disappointed. When in STL we stay at the Saint Louis RV Park because its where its supposed to be and we don't have to drive a lot of miles just commuting. We go for a spot to park our rig until we move on. We don't go for the concrete, chain link fence, the cop station next door or the city noises, but it comes with the territory and that is fine with us. Saint Louis RV park is mostly used by people who are working temporarily in the city and need a good clean, safe spot to stay. The bathrooms are clean, the pool is clean and the asphalt is, well asphalt and the people are nice. Contrary to what some people think, STL is a great town to visit, lots of things to do and see. Great city parks, gardens, museums and 200+++ years of history. The architecture of STL is some of the best in the country. Lots of good food. Do a little search. Our son went for his undergraduate degree in Saint Louis and we got to know what a great town it is. Now when in the area we are sure to stop in and visit for awhile if we can. Rick

RE: Bad Water Boondock Relief?

We do drink out of our tank but have a 3m US-B1 filter. Its really done a good job for us. It really does work. I will probably add a filter on the filler hose to get some of the stuff. Rick

RE: Darn Diesel again

I have two diesels and one is a 2004 Duramax. Yes, I like the truck, but like all of the diesels installed in US pickups have their very expensive troubles. Mine has the LB7 engines, and as all recent diesels are, it is extremely complex. The injectors are not just under the valve covers, they are way under the valve covers. There are lots of parts that go and come with injector replacement. In the Denver area injector replacement should go for about $4000. Half of that cost is for good parts. I change my filters every other oil change and use the most recent Delco filter with the smaller micron specification and have done it as soon as the new filter came out, it may help. It seems to be that small debris in the fuel erodes the injector tip and the cleaner the fuel the less erosion of the injector. Good luck!!!!!

RE: Full Timing

You are leaving a 40 foot 5th wheel and going to a TC. That is one big 5th wheel. Going to a TC would be a huge change. My suggestion is to try a 24 foot TT and see how that works. :C

RE: Auxilliary Fuel tank

We have swapped out our 26gal on my Duramax for a 45gal Transfer flow replacement tank. Fuel is not an issue. we stop when and where we like. There are a number of places in the west that we go that were and are at least 100 miles between fuel stops. Its okay, we can fill up at low priced places or where ever and just keep on going. I never bought it because we would save money.

RE: Trip report/ performance report

We live in the Denver, CO area. I really enjoy a blizzard. I know it can be a pain. We had one yesterday and I absolutely, positively had to be at a meeting. Its okay. I enjoy winter. I enjoy a camping trip in the winter and it was great that Fast.5 could give us another winter trip. Rick
