RE: Camping in the Area of the Blue Ridge Parkway

Well, tell me, I can get by for a few days with just electric.;) Sherando Lake - From the north entrance to the Parkway, at around mile marker 18, head east for about 10 miles. Beautiful campground with 2 lakes, swimming beach, large sites with 30 and 50 amp electric and nice bath houses with showers. Water faucets through out each loop and dump station along the entrance road.

RE: Camping in the Area of the Blue Ridge Parkway

If you didn't want full hookups and could get by with electric only,I'd tell you about a beautiful Forest Service Campground with nice big sites not too far off the parkway.

RE: Thanks for Freedom, Veterans - thankks today and every day!

I am a member of the Womelsdorf,Pa VFW. For the past 4 years we have been doing a 6 mile walk between the 4 Veterans' Memorials in our school district. One of those is at the High School. This year, I invited any of the students who plan to go into the service to come forward and stand with the rest of us veterans. Only 5 students out of about 300 came forward. Less than one percent of the 300 plus million people in the US are defending our freedoms.Think about that. We owe them alot.

RE: Parks waive entrance fees tomorrow

How is it honoring the Veteran if they let everyone in for free?

RE: Zephyr Cove RV Park and bears....

Most black bears are wary of humans and are easily scared off.The air horn or most loud noises will usually scare them away. We have them in the mountainous areas of Pennsylvania and I can't ever remember a black bear killing someone although it may have happened. And a 12 guage shot gun at close range will take out the average black bear. We ain't talking grizzly now.

RE: Public shooting ranges w/full autos-Shenendoah NP area

While there aren't any shooting ranges in SNP,there are some in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. They don't rent weapons, you have to bring your own. Don't know if there any restrictions on full auto. See link below. http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/recreation/shooting_ranges/index.shtml

RE: Pennsylvania help

Some State parks have both cabins and campgrounds. They don't have full hookups but many have electric with water faucets throughout the campground. Most have dump stations and showers.Go to the link for more info. http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/recreation/camping.aspx

RE: Codorus State Park, PA

It's been many years since we were there, but it was a nice park back then and we had no problems. Perhaps there was an over zealous campground host who gave your freinds a hard time.We ran into that a few years ago at a Forest Service Campground.

RE: Assateague National Park

RE: Big Meadows Campground / Shenandoah Nat. Park

Big Meadows is a busy place and they have a huge campground.Lot's of trees and lot's of deer.It is often crowded. Lot's of traffic goes through the campground also. I don't know if it's people looking for sites or people being nosey but lot's of cars and trucks cruising around. They have pay showers and there is a visitor center and a small restaraunt where you can get burgers and the like.We came in from the north side. It's a long slow drive.Took about an hour and a half without stopping.

RE: Pa. to Fort Wilderness w/two overnight stays. Where to stay?

HI, did some youth ministry work at the Lutheran Church in Palmerton back in 1967. Can't remember the name of the family I satyed with but they had a son named Carl. As to your question. We stayed at South of the Border when we went down. That was 18 years ago,but all their sites were pull throughs and there's a restaraunt and several shops there. We also stayed at Kings Mountain State park in South Carolina.I think almost any South Carolina SP would be good.

RE: Yellowstone Via Pennsylvania

Here's what I would do.Take I70 to I74 to I 80 to head to the grand Tetons. Break it down into 4 days. I would stay at KOA's along the way since there are alot of them right off the interstates and they have pools which is nice to take a dip after a long day of driving. The first day in the Tetons I would rest. Second day sightsee then head to Yellowstone the following day and spend 4 days staying in the park at campgrounds closest to whatever you want to see that day. That will mean mostly without hookups so if you don't have a generator, make sure you have 2 good fairly new deep cycle batteries. Make Fishing Bridge your last night stay where you will have FHU. Next day, head over to I90 which will take you into the Black Hills area. I would spend another 4 days there. I would suggest you stay at Custer State Park. Many of their campgrounds now have electric hookups. There is so much to see and do in the park. Take the Wildlife Loop and drive Iron Mountain rd. Stop at the visitor centers and watch the films about the park for some background. If you don't want to stay in Custer SP,then I would stay at Rafter J.It's a great campground but then you have to drive into the park. Mount Rushmore should only take an hour or so. I didn't think much of the Crazy Horse Monument at the time we were there but that was over 10 years ago.Other side trips might be to Bear Country USA and the Cosmos if they are still open,or drive into Hill City and take a ride on the Train. Now you used up 2 weeks. I would take the last week to make a leisurly drive back home so you won't be dead tired when you get there.I would take I90,to I29 to I 80 to I74 back to I70. Avoid the Chicago area at all costs. It will be a great trip.

RE: TT Remodel

While it is interesting,it's not anything that would attract me to buy it. I also thought this statement :" the artist’s view of the cramped space as a jail-like cage" to be a little condesending to all of us that enjoy our small homes on wheels.

RE: Cost of RV Parks

I don't own a campground, but I have an electrical contracting bussines and have been in bussiness over 21 years. My rates have doubled in that time, but so have my costs. In fact, some have gone up over 100%. I bought a new van in 1990 and my payments were about $160 a month. I bought a new one in 2003 and my payments were $375 a month. Gas has doubled, property taxes have doubled and it goes on and on.The sad thing is,I am not really making anymore money than I did 21 years ago. The increases are going to pay my overhead. As for campgrounds, some campers want more and more and more and more. 50 amp electric, cable TV,Wifi etc but don't raise my rates. If you don't want full hookups and other ammenities, you can get sites for alot less.I just stayed in a beautiful Forest service Campground with 50 amp electric and nice wide sites with nice shower houses,a swimming beach for $25 a night. If you have a senior discount,I believe you can get them for half price. But there are other Forest Service campgrounds for alot less that don't have hookups. If you want it all, you're going to pay for it.

RE: Sinnemahoning S.P Pa. Firewood??

If you're into a little history and if the Tom Mix Museum is still there at Mix Run( near Driftwood),check it out. It's small, but we thought it was pretty neat.
