RE: over the mountains

Highway 2 is fine but get off it before leaving Montana. The oil boom in N.D. and eastern Montana means that there are NO openings in campgrounds or RV parks due to so many oil workers. Last year, knowing nothing about the boom, we spent the night at Camp Walmart in Williston but Walmart doesn't allow that any more because so many workers were living in the parking lot.

RE: Tent camping with a C-pap

My niece just uses a battery and connects her cpap to the battery with alligator clips. Not all cpap machines run directly off 12 volts. I have an old one that does. Tried my new one with an inverter. That runs the battery down overnight so the old one goes travelling with me. I did not have the heated humidifier turned on, either. I have a passover non-heated humidifier that I use travelling.

RE: Pennsylvania Turnpike with a Class B

Nothing to do with your question but the PA turnpike was built as a railroad route. I don't think any rail was ever laid. I believe it's been open since the late 1930s or early 1940s. FWIW. Maybe nothing but you can pay me anyway.

RE: Is 31 foot too long for small campgrounds?

Here's my piece of wisdom for you: if you think it's too big, it is. If you think it's too small, it is. If you think it's just right, it is. Gotta make yourself happy. What we think doesn't matter.

RE: What are the advantages to a 5th wheel?

We've had both. The only 5er advantages that I've found are more storage space and they're easier to hook up. I disagree that they tow better than a TT. They seem the same to me. Space for space they cost more than a TT. I couldn't back up our 5ers to save my life but I do ok with our TTs. The short Egg Camper (17 ft) is easier for me than our Kodiak (31 ft). I think that's because the Egg C. reacts faster so that I get a better idea sooner of where it's going. I'd say " if you want a 5er, get one." If you want to stay with a TT, do it. What ever you do, make up your OWN mind. All of us out here have our biases.

Actors & musicians

We watch Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights. They're all old shows. I've been wondering how the musicians and soloists learn so much new material every week. Music and dance steps both. I've also wondered how actors learn so much dialog. Some scenes are pretty long. Also wonder what makes a person want to be an actor. I don't wonder that about musicians because our eldest son is a professional musician/college music instructor. Anybody have any insights to offer me?

RE: Furnance Fan will not shut off

We've had trailers where the furnace fan would run forever if the propane tank(s) were empty. That's how I'd know were out when I'd wake up in the middle of the night. Our newer trailer doesn't do that.

RE: Out West

I second southwest Colorado. Actually any part of Colorado west of I-25. Also the western half of Montana and just about all of Idaho. Those are assuming you don't have time for anything farther west.

RE: I hate to say it.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I've had Fords and Dodges. My current 2009 Chevy is the best looking of the bunch. 1500 extended cab short box with matching topper. I repeat my first sentence.

RE: What do you park on at home?

We parked our Egg Camper on concrete paving stones over the winter. Now it's in our driveway which is blacktop and concrete. The trailer is mostly on the concrete and, when we get our KOdiak back home, it'll also be mostly on the concrete.

RE: Fuel Mileage - TT/TC

Over the years we've had several TCs ranging from 8ft to 11.5 ft and variously towed by both gas and diesel trucks. No matter the truck or camper combo, we almost always got 15-16 mpg. We also have had TTs and 5ers and almost never got above 12 mpg except with our Chevy 1500 and 17 ft Egg Camper which is molded fiberglass and very aerodynamic. We usually get 17 mpg with that combo.

RE: Traveling North Dakota

I saw yesterday that the oil companies in ND are building some indoor RV parks for their workers at Watford City. By all means, avoid that area. In Williston last year a Walmart cashier told us that Walmart is short 200 workers.

The question is: did your foot get caught in your mouth? I've hurt myself many times just that way. Enjoyed your adventure, as always.

RE: Colorado: Highway 71 or 385?

If you're going to nw North Dakota, stay away from Williston. Due to the oil boom there are no campsites available for 100 miles or more. we had to stay at Camp Walmart last year. Since people were living at Camp Walmart, the company kicked people out and don't allow camping in the parking lot any more. At least according to the news report I read a month or so ago.

RE: Chevy vs. Dodge

I've had Fords, Dodges, and am now on my first Chevy. All were the best truck for me at the time. Forget the rumors, try both, get the one you like best/get the best price on. Could come down to driving position comfort. We bought the Chevy because the independent front suspension was easier on my wife's back.

RE: Add a window to TT

The first rv is always a learning experience. That's why I advocate making the first one used. That way, if it isn't a good fit, you don't lose your south end when getting the next one.

RE: We need to make a decision....today?!

I saw a report on tv about hybrids. The math showed that, due to the extra cost, it would take about 17 years to reach the break even point based on slightly improved gas mileage. I'd never buy a hybrid because the longest I have ever owned any vehicle was 7 years. A few years ago we bought a 10 year old travel trailer. we paid too much (probably) but it was in such superb condition that it was worth every penny. Your money, your choice.

Your opinion on ugly current model car front ends?

In my case: the current Lincoln grills, some current Mazda grills, some current Ford Focus grills, current Nissan Juke , but, in my opinion, none of the above can compare to the ugly of the 1961 Plymouth. Google it if you don't know what that looks like. What's your opinion?
