RE: carbon monoxide

4 things come to mind: If stand alone unit, either the internal battery is dead/low or the unit itself has gone bad. They DO wear out. If hard-wired, check the voltage of the big batteries, the output of the converter could be low or non-existent. Or, the unit itself has gone bad. They DO wear out.

RE: AAA RV auto club

Had a wheel bearing eat itself on our 21' toyhauler on the way to the desert. AAA sent a flatbed in a reasonable amount of time, and got our trailer home in front of our house (50 miles). Driver said thank you very much - no charge.

RE: DC will not work

OK, we can rule out the converter, since the slide works hooked up to shore power (the 50amp you talked about). Put a volt meter on the battery(ies), and check with the shore power plugged in, and then disconnected. Big difference? Bad battery(ies).

RE: Grillin'

We got one of these and store an extra wrench for attaching the hose to the propane tank, an ignitor, brush, cooking tools,etc.... Windex works well for killing ants but doesn't affect the cooking process as an insecticide might.

RE: Never-ending tale of woe F-150

Hope it's not the infamous spark plug issue Yep. Blew one right out of the head. Took the threads with it! Helicoil to fix, then to the dealer for a trade-in. Lost all confidence in the vehicle.

RE: Seat Belt will not retract

slowly pull it all the way out, and remove any kinks, dog hair, french fries, or other things that may be interfering. If that fails, remove the plastic roller cover and clean the mechanism out.

RE: WD Hitch - What am I doing wrong?

Start moving weight toward the back of the trailer. Start with locating the water tank. Forward of the axles? If it's full, empty it.

RE: What to do with water filters between trips?

I blow the blue one out with air, and store it on end to drain. The undersink/wet bay one I change annually.

RE: Lucked into a new handy gadget!!!

I had a chat with the local Sheriff's dept about them.. I think they might be useful for night searches and such if they can be made properly senistive. Very handy device. Was on a night search and rescue mission (see User Name) years ago, and the locals had called in a US Customs Blackhawk (yeah, a black helicopter) that had FLIR installed. They couldn't find the subject because the heat from the rocks masked any sign the person could leave... Long story short, he walked into base camp the next morning!

RE: Anyone camp at Fairview Campground in Kernville?

thanks for the trip report. Glad you had a good time. I pretty much grew up there with the McNally grandkids - my parents owned a mining claim on Packsaddle Trail (completely gone now - sigh....) Roads End was a great place in the 60's (that's all gone now too.....)

RE: Looking for hoist ideas

I was thinking something along the lines of a pickup truck bed jib crane. 'course you'd have to figure out the best way to mount it.....

RE: Anyone camp at Fairview Campground in Kernville?

One other questions about Fairview....are you able to fill fresh water tanks at the campground? Do they have a faucet? Is there any where in kernville or Lake Isabella to fill fresh water tanks for my TT? Trying to avoid towing full tanks up there if I can. RE: Anyone camp at Fairview Campground in Kernville?

Thx a lot for the great info here. How bad is the grade on the 178 from the 14? Similar to say the Grapevine or Cajon Pass on the 15? My 5er is pretty heavy and not fun climbing long steep grades. Thx again all!!!! Not nearly as long as either the Southbound Grapevine, or the Northbound Cajon pass. The steep part is only about 2 miles long, if that.

RE: Anyone camp at Fairview Campground in Kernville?

Fairview is right on the river, so fishing and swimming will be good, provided the water is high enough. Not much in the way of trees for shade, and no hookups unless things have changed. Agree that 178 from Bakenfield is tight and curvy. 178 from the East (Hwy 14) is the way we always went from San Diego. Pretty good grade up and over Walker Pass, but once you get past the 1st couple of turns on the west side of the pass, you're golden. Last gas at a reasonable price is at James Store (Sierra Gateway) or at Primo's across the street. You can get anything you forgot at this store. Mtn Hwy 99 follows the river, so it's pretty twisty, but is a good road. Fairview has a small store for ice, bait, canned goods, etc. McNalleys is famous for it's steaks. The hamburgers at the stand next to the campground are good to. A day trip up the river to the Giant Sequoias is recommended. Take rain gear, as frequent thunderstorms in the afternoon pop up. Winds in the morning are usually "down canyon" and "up canyon" in the afternoon. Don't leave a tarp or awning up unattended or you'll lose it. Kern river flow rates Fishing reports

RE: Using bleach to clean water tanks

I would like to clean my water tanks you have more than one? We have 2 50 gal tanks - able to be isolated from each other, or open a valve, and we have 100 gals of fresh water.
