RE: Alaskan Ferry

My wife and I took the Alaskan Ferry from Haines to Prince Rupert and thouroughly enjoyed it. The Ferry office will help you with an itinerary. We got of like the other person said for two days at a time on three islands. I can't remember but ono of the islands had a Raptor Rehab Center and that was great. they had an Eagle show and many other types of damaged birds. Security was not a problem. We slep on deck under and awning on chaise lounges with pillows and a blanket each from the camper. The weather was fine. They will make you secure your gas bottles so we stocked a little fodd as possible in the refer, but as long as we were getting off frequently there was no problem, but getting some ice or using foam ice containers is not a bad idea. I personally wouldn't have been comfortable leaving an animal onboard, even though they let you visit the camper on an irregular schedule. It was one of the best rips we have taken. Just a word the cabins a pretty steep, I would avoid that if at all possible. Go and have great trip, we have been twice and would go again in a minute. Regards Bob

RE: Adding a built in gen set

Ahh yes but you both avoided the issues of noise and vibration. Bob

RE: Adding a built in gen set

Jusr my 2 cents, but I wouldn't trade my Honda 2000 for a built in gen set. I have two friends that say theirs are noisey and vibrate, and keeps them awake. I've never had a problem with the Honda and if it rains I put it under the picknic table and let it run. Sometimes I leave the plastic table cloth on, after all they are only a buck or two. Bob

RE: Beach camping

Years ago we ran on Cape Cod beaches with SRW, 16 inch Uniroyal Lorado's and had to Air down to 15 lbs to get them to belly out at all. They had a really stiff sidewall. The scary part was they told us that they pop off the rims under 13lbs, but it worked out fine, just don't stop in the soft sand if you can help it. Bob

RE: Trip from Maine to Vancouver, Ca via Canada Hwys

We also prefer not to spend too much time on the Super Slabs, but did enjoy the ride through Thunder Bay and didn't find it boring. We took our time smelled the flowers, watched a Black Bear eating the flowers right next to the road, stopped in a lot of small towns for ice cream, and basically just enjoyed our selves. Our first trip took 10 weeks, the second was a little shorter be cause we came down via the Alaska Ferry System and spend a few days in several of the Ports, Juno, Sitka, and Petersburgh staying a Forest Service remote campgrounds. It sounds complicated but was very easy. The Ferry people acted just like a travel service and planned the whole route for us. We started in Haines and finished in Prince Rupert. It also stopped at a couple of small Indian towns but it was in the middle of the night and we just went ondeck for a quick look. My wife thinks there is a Raptor (repair) facillity on Sitka that was worth seeing. If you go take your time, if you have to rush it you will miss so much. We went Hallibut Fishing in Homer then ate them on the grill that night and went Salmon fishing on the Russian River. I'm sorry for going on so much but it truly was a life time experience. Bob

RE: Trip from Maine to Vancouver, Ca via Canada Hwys

Just to add my two cents. I have made the trip from Ma. to Alaska twice, most of it in CA. The toughest road I have ever travelled was from Lillooet down to Whistler. It is steep and winedy and the regulars go like it is a sport car race track. Last time I stopped and pulled two guys in a van out of a ditch when they missed a turn. I have also helped a couple of girls whose brakes were smoking and wanted to know what to do. I'd travel that road again but always in low gear and slowly, drives the regulars nuts. Good luck, I wish we were going with you. Bob

RE: E-mail While Traveling

There are going to be millions of answers to this question, depending on how much you want to spend. You could get a dish if you have a lot of money. My wife and I have been to Alaska twice, the first time we used the Public Libraries in towns we passed through free. the second time we took our laptop and again used public libraries, WIFI hot spots, and campgrounds with WIFI sevice. We really had no problems getting online and worked fine for us for very little money. Bob

RE: new battery goes dead

I'm pretty sure that my Three-way refer will only go back and forth between gas and AC, it will never go to DC by itself. There is a pretty good reason for this and it is that the refer on DC will draw down the best of batteries real quick. It sounds like he is just using too much stuff on DC. It seems I've heard he would be better off with two six volt batteries than one twelve volt battery. Just my opinion. Bob

RE: Rear bath vs. mid-bath

Sometimes people select a floor plan that looks good on paper, but in reality doesn't fit them at all. The mid bath sounds good and actually looks good, but before buying one I would want to be absolutely sure no one is claustrophobic. I would also make sure that no unpleasant odors are going to drift up into the sleeping area. Can you get to the Black water tank for repair? I for one am a little claustrophobic sometimes have to get up and sleep on the dinette. A lot to consider when laying out the cash for a new TC these days, it was much simpler before all the new floor plans came out. I'd like to be in the position to be ordering a new TC I don't know what I'd buy. Probably something I was sure would still be in business next year Good luck Bob

RE: ??? TRUCKCAMPERS ( CANADA in May & June )

As the two Mainiacs said the Kiwanis Campground in St Andrew which is just past St Stevens is a little rustict, flat open field. I think they have some sites back in the woods, but the view for the Bay from the Flat ares is great. We used to walk into town and have dinner at the Light House restaurant which unfortunately is gone now, but you can still walk to town if you wish, very quaint. You have Bay of Fundy National Park (Chignecto North Campground) already on your list. Great spot you may want to spend several days there. They have a golf course and a nice restaurant at the course. Even though you have to divert from the main highway it does return if you stay on it through the little town of Alma, we always go that way. When you get to P.E.I. there is a great Provincial Park on the coast in Stanhope, (Delvay Beach Campground). We have been going about every couple of years before the passport issue came up. Maybe if we get it together we may be able to do it again. Have great trip and post some pictures when you get back. Regards Bob

RE: Heading out Monday-UPDATE!

Geeez do your father a favor and get some kind of heater. Us older folk can't take the cold like you youngsters. A post the other day said that while those Buddy heaters are good and are evidently safe to use indoors that the 1 lb. propane tank is only good for a few hours and will not make it through the night, but it would be better than nothing. Have a great trip, I wish I were going, but be safe and be warm. Good luck Bob

RE: Rooftop bag

We have a Thule Escape II bag. If you read the add closely it says weather resistant, not weatherproof. We installed ours on the roof of the TC and went to FLA last year and traveled through a couple of rain/ice storms in Virginia going down. Good thing we wrapped everything in trash bags because there was quite a bit of water in the Thule Bag when we arrived in Fla. I think the bag is well made but the box type are the only thing that would be weatherproof. We will use the bag again but only put things that can be wrapped in trash bags. Goodluck Bob

RE: Help with weird older style tie downs

http://www.tweetys.com/tie-downs-turnbuckles.aspx Take a look at these. I used universal Belly Bars years ago and they were fine, even ran on the beach with them. Got mine from Sears years ago, I think they were about $125.00 but everything goes up. Good luck Bob

RE: Winter travel from Maine to Fla.

We made the trip two winters ago. We had no problems inside the camper but the exterior was covered in ice and we laid up in a Virginia rest stop along rte 81. It was raining like H**l and it just iced up all over, mirrors on the truck as well as a 1/4 inch coating over the whole truck and the aluminum Lance TC. We were still pretty stable but I was worried about the extra weight we were carrying. Warmed up a little in the morning, ice started to melt and we took off, still raining though. Scary trip but we made it ok. Bob
