RE: Need aux brake advice

I have the M&G Brake setup and I think it's a shade more than awesome. No electronics to go bad. No guessing about how much damage it's doing to your brakes when the exhaust brake is activated. Completely foolproof and fail safe. I can hook mine up in 5 seconds and I don't have to get down on my knees or fight setting it up in the rain or cold. I installed my brake on my pickup an about 30 minutes.
And you bought the ONLY one Id have...should I decide to buy one.

RE: Need aux brake advice

29 US states have it and a breakaway cable as required. Then there is the insurance companies that won't pay claims if you are not in compliance with state laws. The brake will stop you in 20% shorter distance which is about 80 feet at highway speeds, a life or death distance.
List those insurance companys ( a lot more internet hooie!!)
20% shorter equals 80 feet...so that means 100% equals 400 feet... Personally..I HAVE NEVER needed 400 feet to stop for ANY reason with my own coach when towing...let alone some "emergency..all hands on deck" sort of stopping!! ( someone has been reading the ads too much!)

RE: Need aux brake advice

We are getting our Class A and toad outfitted to pull 4 down. We will be pulling a 2010 Chevy Equinox weighing approximately 3800 lbs.
Our installing dealer advises against an auxiliary braking system since they know of some instances (gave me names) where the brake locked up and it did major damage. Their argument is that unless we are going into Canada, for instance, the MH can handle 3800 lbs.
Even though I like my dealer, I would like to hear from some of you about this. Have you had that happen to you or do you know of someone it has happened to? Do I really need to go through the expense or installing a braking system? If so, what do you recommend and about what should I expect to pay?
I notice there is another question concerning brakes that was just posted, but it does not really answer the question I have asked here.
Thanks for your help. You are a great resource of knowledge to me.
My rig weighs 30,000 and my Jeep weighs 3800 lbs and I DO NOT use any supplemental braking and FOR MY SETUP I dont need it....BUT...if my toad were heavier or my coach lighter I would...and the only one Id buy is the M&G setup.
With your setup ( weights) and short wheelbase...if you are at about a 15 degree or more angle to the toad and have to slam on the brakes...that toad is going to drive you sideways....and you wont be stopping very quickly.
I understand what your dealer is saying and I also WOULD NOT buy a braking setup that uses the swinging weights inside the box...for more reasons than 1..but too many to go into here anyway.
It wont be cheap..but you need more brakes

HYD filters...Nelson 84220A

Some of us need these for our HYD systems. My own rig uses 3 of them in a large reservoir. Tough to find at times and some places that sell them say they think they will be discontinued..????:E
But after much searching I saw a hint and called my "local" Cummins dealer and even though the local guy didnt stock them... ( they get them from Columbus Ohio) he said he could have mine sent to me in a day or so. ( Good enough because Im not changing fluid till next spring)
I bought the Nelson filters a few years back for the first fluid change and paid nearly $17.oo each ( I need 3 now)...so I ask the costs and he told me......
............
............ $5.96 each!!!!!! Since they come shipped in a 6 item carton...I told him to send me all 6.
So if your one of the guys that needs a Nelson 84220A filter...call Cummins they have the NELSON filters ( seems Fleetguard owns Nelson now..??)

RE: cleaning water pump filter

My water pressure is extremely low. Past posts have indicated I might need to clean the filter. I had to pull the pump to get to the filter. Now I don't see how to open the filter to check it out. The pump is a Flojet Quiet Quad model 4406. The filter is clear plastic and appears to have been snapped in on the inlet side--will not unscrew. I can see the screen but am determined to get it out for a better look. I hope someone will tell me how this is done. Thanks. Ed
If its the style I think it is ( looks like half of a sphere...i.e.a hemisphere) the flat "lid" twists half way off and it comes apart.

RE: Thinking of selling my coach...Am I stupid?

What if you decide after 6 months that full timing is not for the two of you?
All you will show for it, is a newer coach and PAYMENTS.
Keep the paid for coach for awhile and try full timing in it.
Thats DEFINITELY what I would do! But Im not about to attempt to go FT...now or ever

RE: Winter mix in diesel fuel

I use Howe's Lubricator. Cleans injectors; dissipates water that might be in the fuel; and when double dose'd by their own instructions is guaranteed to prevent fuel from gelling.

RE: What is your max price on an "AS IS" Internet RV auction.

How much would your max bid be on a public auction for a Class A that you could not personally see.
$0.00
I agree 100%. "AS IS" means exactly that and regardless of how it is described...or how many photo's you can look at it STILL leaves the door wide open to be total junk!!! and your money is "adios"

RE: Tires

Two questions:
1.) I need 8 new tires for my 40' 2000 Monaco Signature. Current tires are 11X22.5. Will Michelin's 235 80R 22.5 XRV LRG fit?
Thanks. Lou
An 11R x 22.5 is a LONG way from a 235-80.

RE: Are RV Covers during winter good or bad????

Regardless of what anyone might say...I cover mine with a huge tarp. Its water proof ( not water repellent) and it extends down on any side enough to cover the windows preventing sunlight to penetrate the interior and cause fading.
I dont want snow and ice sitting on my "bare" roof and searching for a potential leak spot.

RE: Oil changes

.... I think some of the tech writers were either ninnies, or just cut and pasted text from other publications.
And THAT is 50% of the problem with a LARGE majority of such "publications". It doesnt matter if it pertains to changing rear differential lube or the universal joint on your steering controls....some "dude" at the factory did a cut and paste of "vendor" info and now its gospel.

RE: Oil changes

I change oil at 30000 to 3500 miles. Last time I said I can make it to 5000 miles plus a little bit to get home, then change the oil. Almost home the oil pressure dropped to 25- lbs on flat ground and in the hills the low oil pressure light blinked on, it dropped to 17 lbs at idle. This is not good stuff. Changed oil; pressure at idle climbed to 35+ lbs. I took a hard trip from AZ to Colorado Rockies high passes, Wy, Wa, Id, capitol reef, Bryce, Zion.
Never again on the overdue oil changes, depends on drive but at 3500 mi. I'm changing oil.
You were LOW on oil...it wasnt "oil contamination" that cause the OP to drop! Either that of the filter itself was headed south on you!

RE: Oil changes

I've been told to change oil in my MH every 3,000 miles. But with all of those highway miles being racked up over, say, a 10-day period, I wonder whether $uch frequency is nece$$ary.
Whadddya all think?
In more than 40 years of driving various vehicles...I HAVE NEVER changed oil in 3000 mile increments REGARDLESS of what the makers instructions stated. I also HAVE NEVER had even 1 incident where an engine "went south" on me because of lubrication "problems"..etc.
Your coach is heavier than my gassers were AND you are towing which I never did with my gassers so IMHO...if I were driving your rig...Id be using SYN motor oil and most certainly SYN tranny fluid and change at "about" a 5000 mile increment

RE: Running rack on cat 3208T

Go to a regular CAT dealer! Since at some point "early" in their life...EVERY CAT motor needs to have the valves done...so ANY qualified CAT mechanic / tech should be able to handle it.

RE: 14.9% interest!!!!

I like the new fees some CC companies are trying to charge if you don't carry a balance or don't charge a certain amount during the year. I'm afraid of what they will think of next.
With CC companys bombarding me weekly for FREE credit cards ( no annual fees) and ( in this day and age) low interest rates ( which I could care less about...I pay them off) any CC company that wanted to charge ME some annual fee.....:B....you would hear my laughter all the way to your home. AINT NO WAY!

RE: Accident & insurance

"When I went to the NADA site & filled out the value page, listing everything it had on it & the mileage, came up to $7000.00 to $8500.00 in value."
First off....if an object came STANDARD on that coach...it cant be included as extra to raise the value.
Second...it doesnt matter how much $$$ you stick into it...even if you installed solid gold faucets..etc...there is NO WAY a 1988 GB is "worth" $17,000. Flat out impossible. You may have PAID that for it..and added on those objects...but that dont mean the rig was WORTH that much loot.
If you wish to come out of this snake's next with some amount of sdanity...and they have offered you $5000 already...Id tell them Id settle for $6000...and walk away a bit wiser than you were / are for shoving that much dinero in a coach that there was no way you could ever get it back out of!
The BASE COACH value is $1,940 (low retail) $2,340 ( hi retail)...someone explain to me how they arrived at $7000..????

RE: How is this one?

We are just about through with the paperwork in buying an 2002 Country Coach Affinity. It is a 42 ft one owner coach with 85,000 miles. It has a beautiful custom south west interior. It drives the best on the freeway of any of the coaches we have looked at. The price including 3 year premium warranty is 138,000. This is quite a lot under the wholesale book. We do not have any big plans to travel extensively now, but I just think bargains like this are going to dry up soon.
The 42 ft really improves the room in the bedroom. The drawers and closet are in the back and makes for a lot of room opposite the queen bed. Although there is a custom fold up computer desk there, when it is folded down it is really a spacious room. It has a tag axle.
I am a bit concerned about the complexity of the coach. There are lots of instruments and some are likely specific to this coach.
But we are going to buy it is the seller performs and pays the bank his share of the money needed to get a clear title.
The Affinity of this year really has a beautiful interior. The only thing we saw comparable were high end CC Intrigues from about 2005.
B Bob: I eat my heart out! And your dead on target...that before too long the bargain used coaches are going to dry up.
Happy cruising guy!!!
