Cedar Point

We want to go to Cedar Point shortly after the kids get out of school. We're planning to stay at the campground there. We have a 44' motorhome with slides on both sides. Is there a significant difference in the sizes of the back-in sites and the pull-through sites? I saw something on the campground map about setting up in compliance with Ohio law, which prohibits any part of the camper (including awning) being within 15' of another camper. Are the sites so small that this is a concern?
Finally, what kind of crowds can we expect in the park in early June? We'll probably be there the week of the 7th. Are weekdays significantly less crowded than weekends, or is it always crowded? Any touring advice for crowd avoidance?

RE: Campers vs trailers

I've called all of our rigs campers, whether trailer, 5th wheel or motorhome. I camp in them, therefore they're campers. We started with a travel trailer, and although we've had a motorhome for a few years now, DH refers to it as a trailer. It confuses the heck out of me, because we also have a utility trailer, a boat trailer and a car trailer, so when he says the trailer I have no clue what he's talking about, and he's just as likely as not referring to something that's not a trailer at all. "Camper" moves nicely from rig to rig.

RE: How many nights out this year

We only had 21 nights in our motorhome this year - 2 trips to Disney World and a long weekend at the local state park. We unfortunately had to cancel our planned summer trip out west and a 5 day trip we usually take with a group of friends because DH had to work. We usually average about 30 nights. When we first started out it was many trips of short duration; now it's fewer trips, but further from home and longer.

RE: MYRTLE BEACH

I don't think you can go wrong with any of Ocean Lakes, Lakewood or Pirateland. We stayed at Lakewood a couple years back. It hadn't been my first choice after reading these forums, but it was the only one with space. We greatly enjoyed it, and I checked out Ocean Lakes and Pirateland while we were there and thought we'd have been perfectly happy with any of them. Ocean Lakes has the best gameroom (a place I try to keep my kids out of) and also some concrete sites if you're looking for that. They've got pull through sites, but many of the pull through sites were quite small, IMO. Pirateland has a very nice pool with a lazy river. All have activities (at least during the summer, when we were there). All are right on the ocean.

RE: Inviting friends along - what age?

We now don't bring friends until they are 10 or 11. We did sleepovers at home from the time the kids were 6, but we're always gone for more than one night, so doing OK on a 1 night sleepover isn't necessarily indicative of how a child will do for longer, and I frankly do not want the responsibility of another small child. Our first "friend" experience was to a local state park when oldest D was 8. Her friend, who had done well on sleepovers at our house, decided she didn't want to stay in the camper and her mother came to get her. Thus the 10 or 11 rule. Youngest D is now 10 and still hasn't brought a friend; the 13 and 16 year olds have had friends many times.

RE: Washers/Dryers in rv's

We had the stackable ones in our 5th wheel toy hauler. I liked having them, and if I was full timing there's no way I would want to be without a washer and dryer. I preferred the stackables to a combo, but I also had laundry for 6 or 7. In our current motorhome we do not have a washer or dryer, but we aren't taking trips that are so long that I need to do much laundry. When that day comes, I'll be adding the washer/dryer.

RE: Toilet Paper???????????

We use Member's Mark (Sam's Club brand) at home and Scott's single ply in the camper, although I've used the MM in the camper when that's what I had handy without a problem. The Scott's is in individually wrapped rolls, and I actually like that.

RE: Inflatable Bed or foldaway

We had an inflatable on our last rig and never had a problem with it. As long as we made sure all (or at least most of)the air was out of it when we folded it up, and were reasonably careful, nothing got caught, pinched or ripped. The sofa bed in our current rig has a regular mattress, and we're already looking into replacing it with an inflatable mattress.

RE: Loooong drive

The most I've ever driven in a day is 10 hours. The longest day in the motorhome for me (I was only the passenger) was 16 hours. My DH has driven our motorhome from Wisconsin to Tampa and from Wisconsin to Utah, both straight through. I don't know how he does it.

RE: joining good sam?

We've gotten enough campground discounts to pay for our membership, but other than that there's little benefit for us. I enjoy looking through the magazine they send, though.

Question for those who own a Travasak or RV Superbag

I ordered a full/queen size Travasak and it came today. I intended to use it on our queen size bed. Our motorhome is in storage, so I tried it out on daughter's full size bed. It's not even as big as her full size comforter, and there was maybe an inch or two overhang on each side of the bed, so I don't think there will be any overhang on my queen size bed. If you're using this on an RV queen, do you put it on top of the existing bedspread so the mattress isn't showing? That seems to defeat the purpose since the bedspread would probably get messed up and you'd need to make the bed anyway. Or do you just cover the mattress with a fitted sheet? (Not a good looking solution since my queen fitted sheets are ill fitting on the RV queen). I'd happily pay more for a larger Travasak, but it looks like the full/queen (which is really just a full) is all there is. If I can't find a way to make this work in the bedroom, I'll just use it on the cabover bed, where it will probably work perfectly, but then I need another solution. I saw that the RV Superbag comes in a king size, but I don't know much about them other than that they're pretty expensive. Does it work the same way as the Travasak? I like the Travasak - it seems to be well made, the sheets went in easily, the zipper operates smoothly - so if I can find something similar that's larger, I'd probably get that. Any thoughts?

RE: Wisconsin Dells

When we went a few years back we stayed at Devil's Lake State Park and Baraboo Hills Campground. Both were nice. Our favorite activities in the area were Noah's Ark waterpark and riding on the Ducks. Most of the other stuff we did/saw outside of the campgrounds was pretty lame.

RE: Where and When is your first 2010 trip?

Not until March 26. We'll pull the camper out of winter storage to head south to Disney's Fort Wilderness. That's almost always our first trip of the year. Then the camper goes back in storage until at least Memorial Day.

RE: Disney World - Fort Wilderness or Value Resort

***We are going to FW in March and have a "Full Hook-Up Campsite" reserved. This is not a premium or preferred site. Has anyone had experience with a site such as the one we have reserved in regard to size and slide outs? Our 5th wheel is 35' with 2 slides.***
If I'm not mistaken, the full hookup sites are in the 1600-1900 loops. Some of the sites in those loops are as big as any I've seen at FW, so I'm sure they can find one in there that will easily accommodate your 5th wheel. We were assigned last spring to a premium site that we couldn't fit into with our 44' motorhome, so "premium" is no guarantee of adequate size.

RE: Campfires at Disney, Florida

Last time we were there (Thanksgiving 2009) the folks at the site a couple down from us had a portable covered firepit and they had a campfire going every morning and for 5-6 hours every evening for the entire week. Plenty of Disney employees went by and saw the fires and did not stop them, so I'm assuming there is not a total prohibition of campfires. We've always been too busy with other things to feel the need for a campfire while at Disney, so I've never had one myself.

RE: Disney World - Fort Wilderness or Value Resort

Fort Wilderness is a great place to stay, and it's my favorite resort in all of WDW, but it's no bargain. We go at busy times, and we pay over $100 a night. I remember several years back when we went at a non-peak time and it was around $40/night - now that was a bargain. A room at a value resort would definitely be a better deal for us, because there are all kinds of promotions for the rooms this year, whereas I guess they don't have trouble keeping the campground full, particularly at the peak times. However, we like going in the motorhome and staying at the Fort. If we didn't go in the motorhome, we'd have to fly (which I hate) because there's no way DH would be willing to drive the 20 hours to Florida with the kids in the car. In the motorhome they're spread out and out of our hair, and we don't have to synchronize their bathroom schedules. Staying at Fort Wilderness is a much different (better, IMO) experience than staying at one of the other resorts, and so far they haven't hit the price point at which I say enough, although they're getting very close. Until then, we'll continue to choose FW.

RE: RV related Christmas gifts

Congratulations on the new job! DH got a new entry rug for the motorhome, as well as a Black & Decker Ready Wrench and a Deluxe Trucker's Atlas with spiral binding and laminated pages. Unfortunately, our next trip won't be until late March.

RE: Can you live with slides in?

We have a class C with 4 slides. Sometimes when we stop for a quick overnight, we don't bother to put our slides out, and obviously the slides are in while we're on the road. We have access to everything important - the bathroom, the entire kitchen and all storage except a few drawers in the bedroom. We have two sofas in the main area, and we can't pull out the sofa bed on one with the slides in, but we can jackknife the other one. So instead of being able to sleep 8, with the slides in we can only sleep 7. Not a biggie since we rarely have 8 people along.
