RE: first trip

Spare keys: you carry one set, your wife has the other.
Necessary medications.
More general hints:
Use baskets or boxes inside cupboards and fridge so contents don't get a running start to knock the door open. Don't ask me how I know this.
Pack heavier items closer to the floor, lighter items up top.
Have a great time!

RE: Wanting to burn my tents

All good advice above. Don't forget to consider where you will be keeping your TT. Storage costs money. Parking it at home is often not legal (city municipal code) or not allowed by HOA.

RE: Laundry Day!

I spent 20 years using public laundromats. When I finally was able to buy a house and my own laundry equipment, I think I appreciated the W/D more than the house! Now I use public laundry equipment only when I travel.
My observations: Most people who use public (not campground) laundries are good decent people. The laundromat is an extension of their home. They don't trash the equipment. They do their laundry just like anyone else, with possibly their worst offense being the heavily scented laundry products that I have to avoid. Some cannot afford their own equipment. Some, especially in small backwoods towns, use the laundromats due to shortage of water at home.
You might want to avoid these places on Sundays, when they often seem to be full of ranch hands or sheepherders or heavy equipment operators spending their day off washing their very grubby clothing.
My advice: Stay with your laundry. Take a book or a computer toy along to amuse yourself, or chat with the locals. Check the equipment often. Be careful not to melt your clothes in the dryer.
Campground laundries, where no one lives there or will even be there tomorrow, are a whole 'nother place. No accountability. Beware. You're lucky that your clothing was only folded wet and not stolen.

RE: COE PARKS

Army Corps of Engineers, "Where We Are" page leads to each area of country. Sub-pages for each area are not in a standard format, but I tested several and found either Recreation links or clickable maps of lake locations which worked to find campgrounds.
The "Where We Are" page:
http://www.usace.army.mil/Locations.aspx
Corps Lakes link from main COE page, took absolutely ages to load:

The good thing about an adventure like yours is that it leaves you with stories to tell. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to parts 2 and 3.

RE: After a year of shopping for the perfect truck camper...

Congratulations!
From my many years in the RVing world, I have gleaned this wisdom:
There is no perfect RV, TC's included. Enjoy what you have. A trip in an imperfect unit is way better than no trip at all.

RE: Long grades in and out of San Diego on I-8

Watch out also for high wind warnings. Usually they are just warnings and the wind is nasty, but sometimes they close the road to high profile vehicles.

RE: Mammoth Lakes

Bishop BLM website gives status of Crowley Lakes campground:
"Crowley Lake Campground is now closed for reconstruction. This project will continue into 2012. The campground will open for fishing season opener and remain open until July 5th. It will then close to finish re-construction." Fishing season just opened, so I guess that camp is now open until July 5th.
http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/bishop/camping/index.html
I don't know anything about the campground that is actually at the lake. Their website says dry camp site is $15 a night.
http://www.crowleylakefishcamp.com/rates.html
Get the current status of Mammoth campgrounds from the Inyo NF website. They had a real bad windstorm about December 1; thousands of trees blew down. Cleanup continues. In a normal year, dry camping in the Mammoth area is wonderful. Many campgrounds to choose from. Dispersed (remote) camp areas seem to be getting more limited each year.

RE: Friday night fluff-Wolf Creek Pass

I like that road, and agree that it is one of the tamer CO passes. Usually I even manage to stay in one lane while driving it. :-) I thought I would have motion sickness before your video was finished!
On my first trip it was paved, but still had the "tunnel" snow shed and all the twisty turns. We were driving a 1960 Ford sedan with a 3-speed stick on the column and towing a small TT. More recent trips, with the Allison 6-speed geared down and C.W.'s tune playing on the CD, have been more pleasant. It was snowing on top last time, in July.

RE: First trip questions?

I bought a how-to RV book before my first trip. It saved the day when the water heater didn't work. It had worked fine at home. I followed the troubleshooting chart in the book, discovered that the problem was probably the thermocouple. Sure enough, it was loose. I tightened it. Hot water!
So, my first piece of advice is to get a book like that. It tells how to open your awning, how to run every type of appliance, etc.
My second piece of advice is to take your first trip in your driveway. Or at a campground very close to home.
Happy trails!

RE: The Whazoo's trip of many colors...Or...Brokefoot Mountain

Too much scenery in Whazoo's photos? NEVER!!!! You've done your usual fantastic job of trip reporting. Thank you! You brightened this gloomy May Gray San Diego County morning for me.
I liked the photon crutches, too. My hiking sticks (outdoor crutches/weapons) could use an upgrade like that.

RE: Chaco Canyon & Angel Peak BLM Area

Your great report reminds me of the bad parts of non-RV camping. And first come first served campgrounds, of which I am usually a fan. Chaco, with many miles of backtracking to alternate campsites, would be an great place to be able to make reservations.
I went there in the early '90s (with RV) and it's been on my go-back list for quite a while, but now I'm not so sure.
The road was very washboarded back even then, and was closed after rains.

RE: Class C overcab bunk

We used a shower-curtain sized rod (attach brackets to side walls of cabover) with a net that had about one-inch mesh. The bottom of the net was attached to the bunk floor under the mattress and we put a hem across the top to thread the rod through. Just lift rod out of brackets and lay it on mattress for access/egress.
This worked for us with two toddlers. If you have an escape-artist child, be sure that the rod latches into place.
Another method is to use portable bed guard rails. Walmart carries them.

RE: Going from Minden, Nevada to Santa Barbara suggestions?

If you are going now, you'll find many areas along 395 still closed by snow. Explore anyplace you can. If you get towards the south end of 395 and haven't run out of time, you might look at some of the spots covered in my recent trip report.
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/25998626.cfm
Or go west on Hiway 58, then south on 101 to Santa Barbara.
