RE: Our first trip to RGV this winter

I don't know which way you are coming to the RGV but at the jct. of Hwy. 77 & 83 there is a state tourist center. Follow the signs. We always go there and pick up brochures on the entire area. There are lots and lots of nature centers in the Valley as well as conservation type areas. Many of the canals have walking paths along them as well.
I would also recommend you go to the Chamber of Commerce office in Weslaco. They have a very good selection of brochures for the area. While there, watch the video on the Sugar Cane industry - it is very good. We were there one morning and they had free coffee and donuts. Be sure to pick up a free copy of the Winter Texan Times each week because it lists all the various things to do.
You'll be busy! !

RGV Grapefruit

We are missing the great grapefruit we get in the Valley. Our local supermarkets are featuring Texas grapefruit this week for $2.49 for a 5 lb. bag. I had a look at them, and they were really small. They were from a grower in Mission. Are they keeping all the big, juicy ones for the locals and shipping out the #2 grade, or are they small because it is early in the year or ? ? ?
Can't wait to get down there and enjoy some freshly picked fruit.

RE: Passport America

We have been members for many years and seem to be able to work around the restrictions. This year alone we have saved $850 and we're not done yet. Oh, did I say our current membership was free because of a promotion they had a year ago for signing up new members. It is a very good deal - just don't expect high standards at all of the c.g.'s (you can always leave if you don't like what you find).

RE: RV park around Cincinnati, OH

Oak Creek C.G. is 20 miles south of Cincinnati at Exit 171 on I-75. Several times we have made it our first night stop when heading south in the winter. They have electric hookups and heated washrooms with showers. One year they told us to release our grey water on the ground but had a dump station available if you needed to use it for black water. It is also a Good Sam park. If you decide to go there, park on a site at the bottom of the hill and walk up to the office (very short walk)as there is a tricky turn if you are long or have a tow vehicle. Best to avoid.

Camping World

Is overnight camping at Camping World generally allowed. We stayed at one last winter and there was electricity available in the parking lot.
We were having work done on the M.H. the next day and maybe this is why it was permitted. Just wondering if it is generally acceptable and if all locations have electricity (a must in the winter).

RE: Mission/McAllen Best Daily Rates

Also have a look at Mission Gardens - nice large sites, friendly people and it used to be Passport Am. - maybe still is - I didn't check.

RE: Advise for a COE in northern half of Mississippi?

What is Tenn-Tom? We plan to be in Mississippi in March and we have never stayed at a COE park. Maybe this winter we will give one a try. I'm assuming the sites and roads are capable of handling a M.H. with tow car. Someone said the rates were very reasonable - what is reasonable? We are happy with 30 amp and a dump station but full hookups are nice to have as well.

RE: Canadian Maritimes Intinerary - Comments?

Definitely go and see PEI. I think it is worthwhile to go to
Charlottetown and see the musical Anne of Green Gables and visit Founders Hall.
Also if you go to Brudenell (a really nice park), check to see what is happening at the Playhouse in Georgetown. They get some good entertainment at very reasonable prices. There is always lots of entertainment around the province most nights of the week and the prices are so reasonable and lots of fun. If you enjoy bicycling, there is the Centennial Trail - paved in many areas - pick up a brochure on it.

RE: Crime in Rio Grande Valley, Texas

We feel safe when in the RGV but we do not stay out late at night. I think you are relatively safe in your RV park. However, we are always amazed at the number of shootings, robberies and drug busts that are on the TV news every morning. In general we feel it is a rather violent area but the local problems do not involve Winter Texans - just be cautious and sensible about your surroundings and time of day. This winter will be our 6th in the Valley.

Last time we were at MBSP there were a lot of signs up warning of snakes. Has this changed? I don't do well with snakes around!

RE: RGV departure Dec 27

jwakeman - you asked about finding overnight sites
Since you are a Good Sam member, go to the Woodalls link - type in a city you will be passing through. When you get the page that asks what facilities you require, check off "open all year". Then I recommend you call ahead and confirm that they really will be open when you arrive.

RE: Canadian snowbirds - Out of country health insurance

I think Prime Link has some plans that will cover you but be prepared to pay $$$$.
I would talk with one of their agents and read the fine print carefully.
Sandersons are also easy to deal with and being smaller than Prime Link, much more approachable than a big company. Not nearly as many buttons to push to get a real live person.

RE: What do you do with all your money??

Patter - I just looked up the brochure I have on TD's US accounts. You are correct that there is no fee for their US Visa account, but the Borderless Plan costs $4.95 US a month unless you maintain a $3000 balance. We prefer to use the US Dollar Chequing account which has no fees if the balance is $1000 of more. You also earn interest on this account, but we all know what that amounts to these days.
It appears the bank is going to get their fees out of us one way or another!

H1N1 in the RGV

Can someone who is already in the RGV tell me what the situation is with regards to H1N1. Is it hitting a lot of people down there? We were hoping to get our shots before leaving home, but now they are reporting shortages in our area and who knows. We definitely want to get the shot - so please don't try to convince us it is not necessary.
We have had several deaths in our area and those who have had it report it is not a fun experience.

RE: Driving in winter

We watch the weather very closely and look for at least a 2 day "window of Opportunity" so we can get through Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and down into Tennessee. I also have a list of c.g.'s that are open along our planned route so hopefully if the weather turns bad, we are not far from an overnight stop. Last winter was the first time we had to drive the M.H. & tow car in snow. DH was surprised at how well it handled but I was a nervous wreck as a passenger. Luckily we ran out of the snow very quickly (in Michigan - Lansing area).

RE: What do you do with all your money??

Lorne & Lorraine - have you found a no fee US credit card. TD charges $25/year - borderless plan also costs $4.95 US a month if your balance is less than $3000. I prefer "no fee" banking. These charges apply whether you are a senior or not.

RE: Cowboy Boots in RGV

I think most of the boot shops in Mexico are owned by the same people or relatives. When DH was looking for boots, the one store did not have what he wanted in his size so someone from the shop went running across the road and came back a few minutes later with the required boot. We also heard this from others in our campground. Your budget will determine where you buy and how much patience you have for trying many on.

RE: Food allowed into States

Retired Snook
Perhaps if you told us what border crossing you will be using, it will help. We had six border crossings this summer, from Ontario and Quebec, going into New York, also from Ontario into Michigan. I checked with the borders before leaving home and only restrictions are lamb, mutton, goat and citrus. I try to take pet food made in USA - five years ago I had pet food taken because the package did not show where it was mfg.
Crossing from Canada into some states, e.g. California may have different
restrictions.
