RE: Interstate 80 road condition

Dennis, What is the prefered route from Elkhart to I-80 west of IL, without getting on I-80 at Elkhart? We are going to Columbus OH and then Elkhart for some RV repairs next spring and when we head home to Idaho, I want to stay away from I-80 in IN and IL. Thanks If you don't want to use I80 near Elkhart you are pretty well limited to 2 lane roads. Getting to Elkhart you might consider US 33 or US20. Leaving Elkhart one possibility would be to go north out of Elkhart to US12 and then west to I 94. I94 runs into I80 near Gary but from there you only have one toll to get through Chicago.

RE: Interstate 80 road condition

The section around the southern tip of Lake Michigan, i.e. Gary, Chicago has been greatly improved in recent years. The traffic volume is still pretty intense though.

RE: truck tag

In Michigan my truck is licensed as a personal vehicle (i.e. car.) Trailers get a permanent plate, based on weight.

We had ours out for three straight months in Yuma.

RE: Bad Tire Experience

Not all Marathons are made in China. The original tires on my last trailer were Marathons made in New Zealand. I bought a spare seperately, also a Marathon, it was made in China. The set on the trailer when I sold it were Marathons made in Alabama.

RE: Lake Michigan camping?

On the Michigan side, Ludington State Park is a jewel. . . It will be tough to get in on a weekend in summer, however. Right now the earliest you can probably get a reservation is during the week, sometime after Labor Day. I was working on a September reservation about a week ago and three sites disappeared off the screen faster than I could get my credit card info in.

RE: NICE RV Park/Campground Near Downtown San Antonio

We too stayed at the KOA and took the bus downtown. It worked well for us. The second day we drove the truck out to the missions.

RE: pex tubing

Shark-Bite fittings for PEX. No tools, easy to use, tons of options, available at Home Depot/Lowes (insert and tighten...done) >>>Click They are a bit pricey but they do work well. You can release them if you want to change something.

RE: Chev 2500 camper mirrors

While I love my towing mirrors, they can hide vehicles coming toward you from the left or right, primarily the right, at intersections. You just have to be a little careful.

It's only a mirage.

RE: Waxing front cap

Most RV waxes are rub on, rub off. I wouldn't use a buffer on the decals. My biggest problem is reaching.

RE: Snowbirders still in Yuma

Our BIL and SIL (also our lot landlords( are still there. They are timing their departure to hit Chicago around May 1 for a First Communion.

RE: Tow /haul button >>

One other aspect of the tow/haul mode that I didn't notice mentioned is that when the transmission shifts it shifts more quickly. It may seem rougher or more harsh but by doing this it reduces wear on the clutch packs inside the transmission. This helps extend the life of the transmission.

RE: Algodones, Mexico Dentist

No chance here! I'll stick with my USA dentist and I have heard how cheap and in some cases how good of a job they do but not gonna happen with me. I just has a crown it cost me a couple hundred after insurance and I was 10 min. From Home It's easy to condemn people struggling without insurance when you yourself have it. That couple of hundred would have been a couple of thousand without insurance. I'll also wager you had to wait 4 - 6 weeks for the permanent crown after getting the temporary one. In Algodones it's the next day. And as mentioned, many of these dentists received their training in the USA right next to your dentist.

RE: Line-X. Spray hitch rails or not?

I'm with Biscuit. The pins fit into the holes pretty tightly. My guess is that the liner material is thicker than the clearance. In other words, the pins would not likely fit.

RE: Algodones, Mexico Dentist

There are over 300 dentists in a 4 block area at Algodones. They must be doing something right to have enough customers to keep them all in business. The dentist we use does not take people coming in off the street, only working with past customers and recommendations do I can't help you. I would suggest you go to one who does not have someone out on the street trying to hand you his/her card.

RE: Towing fifth wheel

You do not NEED any of that stuff. I tow with just a regular hitch and a regular pin box and mine tows very nicely. All of those things may improve your towing experience, depending on the truck, fiver, and loading, but are not necessary. My .02 This is the best advice. Start with the regular hitch and pin box and only upgrade if you want. Also, I don't necessarily agree that you need to stick with a "small" fifth wheel with the truck you mentioned. I have a similar truck and am pulling a 38', 12000" fifth wheel, comfortably, well within the truck's specifications. X2

RE: Toll Roads and EZ Pass

OK, now I'm confused. I went through PA several years ago and I was billed correctly. Nowhere in my account set up did I have to say whether I was towing or not. And as someone else mentione, in addition to counting axles, EZ Pass also figures out weight when appropriate. It is my understanding that some states issue the passes only by axle count and some issue by both weight and axle count. I was told that my Maryland passes are valid for my 2-axle motorhome and we have been billed appropriately by weight in PA and on the US301 bridge from MD to VA. In my EZPass account I have the pass registered to the license plates of my motorhome so no one can accuse me of hiding the fact. I can't speak for all states but I have I-Pass out of Illinois. I have three vehicles registered to one transponder, the car, the truck, and the fifth wheel. I move the transponder back and forth between truck and car and have always been billed correctly, whether pulling fifth wheel or not.

RE: Help with lifts for bed storage?

You can get a lot of info, including some design info if you google "gas springs."
