RE: Camper realities for family of 5

I'd be looking at the Lance 830 with the fold out tent in the back.

RE: what tipe of tie downs

I had Happijac QuickLoads and changed them out for FastGuns. Much easier to use.

RE: DW not thrilled but said OK.........if

The portables take up an awful lot of floor space for a small truck camper.

RE: Gutless Alpha See Ya

Scott: He's had it less than two years but it's been the same all along. Tahiti: I'm not making a gas/diesel judgment though I doubt a gas engine would do as well as the cat diesel. As for the brand of the coach, other than the power issue and a problem with the slide mechanism (fixed by Alphatiers), the See Ya is a fantastic rig. As for the "Stuff" he carries, it's pretty minimal. He usually drives with very little water in the fresh tank, and black and grey empty. The storage compartments are relatively empty. I probably load up more "stuff" with rig than he does (it's amazing how much you can fit in a LandCruiser sitting on a trailer). He does sometimes tow a 94 Jeep Wrangler or early Honda CRV (the small one). I've used his rig to tow both of them and also my own trailer with the LandCruiser (total about 7000#). None of these seem to make much difference. He hasn't weighed it yet, though I've suggested he do so.

Gutless Alpha See Ya

My father has an 05, 40' Alpha See Ya! with a 350 Turbo Cat. Driving up a long grade, he looses power substantially. It won't keep up with my 05 Chevy 1 ton with camper and trailer (total weight about 20,000#). He can't keep up with the tractor trailers or other RVs either. He's power washed the radiator, replaced the fuel filter and it in to the Cat dealer and they say nothing's wrong with it. Is this normal for this RV or does anyone have any suggestions.

RE: 3500 owners

Though I really love my TorkLift frame mount tie downs, 2200# would be fine with a set of HappyJacs. That said, if you get the TorkLifts, you'll be all ready for a heavier camper later. Regardless of the anchors you buy, I can't stress how much easier TorkLift FastGun turnbuckles are than anything else on the market. Well worth the money. As for suspension, you'll probably be fine with the stock suspension. All I did was upgrade the shocks and my camper is almost twice the weight of yours.

RE: Carrying a Camper on the Newer "Gas" Trucks

My camper is 4300# and my trailer varies between 7000# and 8000#. My Chevy 8.1L hauls it just fine up a grade. If you are going to put a heavy camper on, I would recommend a dually to avoid tire failures.
