RE: Dutchman brand? Any good?

We have a 2008 that we bought new. This is the 4th year with it & it's been totally problem free. Total cost to maintain it last year including winterizing it was maybe $20.

RE: How long will the water stay good in my fresh water tank

When draining the FW tank and leaving it empty before the next camping trip, is it advisable to leave the drain plug off? Or screw it back on? Thanks. I'd advise not leaving it empty between trips. I was doing just that but noticed after the TT sat in the driveway for several weeks between using it, the inside of the fresh water tank had started to become moldy. My fresh tank is in full view when looking under my camper. It appears that even tho I kept the cap loose (I have a 2" drain valve on mine), the dampness in the tank caused it to get moldy. There's not enough air circulation in it to dry it out, so now I completely refill it after a campout, then drain & refill it immediately before the next campout. This keeps it from growing mold inside it. To clean out the mold, I poured 1 gal of bleach into it, let it sit a few days, drained it & added another gal of bleach for another few days. Maybe I could have used a pool shock treatment, but I not familiar enough with that to try it. To rinse it out completely required filling & draining 8 full tanks of water.

RE: Awning rod multi tool

I have a 1 1/2" or 2" (forgot which size) drain valve on my fresh water tank. I use the loop end to reach under the TT to pull the handle on the valve to drain it.

RE: Painting the trailer tongue

Funny, I just painted mine yesterday. Used Rust-oleum in satin black. Perfect match. I freshen up my hitch like this every year.

Just dodged a bullet today, potential leak

Cleaning & waxing the TT today & noticed at the front upper corners where the side wall meets the front corner moulding, I noticed I could push in on the aluminum siding & it was seperated from the caulking under the corner moulding. This would allow any rain water to leak in under the edge of the aluminum. Camper was in indoor storage for the winter, so it was dry from mid Oct until mid Apr, but is outside now until next mid Oct. Checked the front & side walls as well as the floor in those areas & found no evidence of water intrusion. Must have caught it before any damage was done. Resealed most of it today & will finish it tomorrow. Regular inspections & preventative maintanence is so important to the longevity of these things.

RE: Campground Oops

I guess I'm the oddball here. In 17 yrs of towing. I have yet to damage anything. Probably just a matter of time tho.

RE: Gulfstream Amerilite 23BW

For what it's worth I had a 2007 25 BH LE and never had any problems with it. It was an entry level RV, but it performed flawlessly for us. We only gave it up because we wanted more space. It always seems that it's the entry lever TT's that seem to have the least amount of problems. Hmmmm...., maybe it's the entry level TT's that are actually the better TT's. Mine's also an entry level one & just starting it's fourth year of camping. Other than replacing the cr@p tires at the beginning of the second year, & fixing a waterline off the hot water tank that froze & split, it's been problem free. I spent maybe $20 on maintanence on it last year & that included the pink stuff to winterize it.

RE: Well, we're back to camping again

We got a 2010 Jay Feather Sport 165 travel trailer. It's 18 feet long with a double bed and a bunk, and the gaucho where the dinette is can be made into a bed also. It's small but has lots of storage space - I can't believe how much! Perfect for 2 old campers and a dog. Rita I also had a 165 at one time. Some things to be aware of: Look on the outside at the bottom of the exterior front & rear walls. Make sure the exposed edges of the floor are enclosed in a water tight material. Mine weren't. When snow that was drifted up against the front wall melted, the edge of the floor wicked up all that water & ruined the floor. Also check to make sure your tub drains to the gray tank. Mine was plumbed to the black tank which sits directly below it. The black tank is only 11 gals, so imagine to my surprise when the black tank backed up into the shower while I was using it. Had the dealer replumb it to a second additional gray tank that was then tied into the main gray tank. I also replaced the round dining table with one of those small, rectangular, collapsable poly.... tables. Then used that inside & out. Enjoy your new camper.

RE: Covering your Power Tongue Jack

Ok, OK OK. I just spent $20K on a Travel Trailer, another $250.00 on a power jack and now I'm goig to use a Walmart bag, a trash can mod or some other (sorry about this) silly looking thing (maybe with a nice logo)to cover the jack and chains? I don't think so. Spend the other $10 and get the right cover. Get your wife involved and send her to Joanne's Fabric for some rain resistent material and have her sew one. Something that looks professional. My goodness guys. I'm all for saving money, but I will not go hillbilly! The best type of cover is one that allows for plenty of air circulation while still keeping it dry & the kitty litter bucket does just that. I'm definately not the hilbilly kind, and I know none of my neighbors gives a rats arse what I use to cover the jack. Secondly, I'm not about to try to impress anyone with any type of dijon jack cover. It only gets used while it's at home parked in the driveway & like I said, I have great neighbors & they could care less what I use to cover it with.

RE: Covering your Power Tongue Jack

I don't have a power tongue jack, but want my crank to stay dry as well. I just use an old kitty litter bucket over it & hang my chains on the crank handle under it. The bucket over it still allows for lots of air circulation while keeping it dry. The bucket also keeps the crank handle out of the sun to keep it from drying out & getting brittle as we all know plastic does. Already had the bucket, so cost was $0. So I guess I could say: "using a kitty litter bucket over tongue jack,PRICELESS" LOL...

RE: streaks from black streak remover

I don't use black streak remover because of problems with it. Next time try Awesome from the dollar store. A $1.00 a bottle and works great. We sure to apply it to a wet surface. With Awesome, make sure you rinse IMMEDIATELY & DO NOT let it dry at all or you will end up with the dull streaks that the original poster expressed concerns over. Ask me how I know.....

RE: Safe / Ideal RPM Range When Towing

Surprised you can lockout OD. I had an 05 Dakota V8 & you couldn't lockout OD. All you could do was put it in tow/haul mode which only modified the shift points.

RE: Dodge Ram 1500

My camper is about 4500# dry, so I figure 5500-6000 lbs in camping trim. The GVWR for the camper is 7700#, but you'd be hard pressed to put enough into it to get it to that weight. My Dodge also has the factory tow pkg, but mine has a 3.92 limited slip rear end. Tows my camper easily. Surprised your's, with a tow pkg, has only a 3.21 rear end.

RE: CAMPGROUNDS WITH SEASONAL SITES

Most of the seasonals around here look like junk yards with old fridges & just junk laying round everywhere. In general, they just look trashy. The people may or may not be friendly, I just don't want to spend my weekends looking at their trashy sites. Just because they may be seasonals is no excuse for looking trashy.

RE: Hand held electric drill for jacks

18v Dewalt & just set the torque setting to #6. No final hand tightening required. Torque setting on #6 on mine sets the stabilizers just right. I have an 18v because it's used for more than just setting the stabilizers.

RE: Did you settle or ?

I settled. Went looking for a unit a little more basic than what I wound up with because the dealer had the wrong sale prices in the window with the VIN numbers attached. Wound up getting the much nicer/more optioned unit at a lower price than the lower cost units sale price. When I picked it up, they informed me the sale price of the lower cost unit was accidentally attached to the higher priced unit. Their mistake was my gain. It's a 2008 & as of last year, a 2008 model optioned like mine was selling used for more than I paid for it new. At the time I couldn't go any larger because the Dodge Dakota I had would have struggled too much to pull anything heavier.

RE: Four Mile Creek State Park Camping

Your camping fee covers your entrance fee for the length of your stay. It also covers your parking fees at the State park parking lots in Niagara Falls. Four Mile Creek is a great place to stay while exploring the area. As an added bonus, it's ALL New York State Parks, not just Four Mile Creek, that allow you to park free at the State Park in Niagara Falls. Last summer, returning from Darien Lake SP, we stopped in Niagara Falls, NY and just showed our permit from Darien Lake. What a great deal! X2

RE: Heavy duty shocks, super springs or both for truck?

The only type of shocks that will hold up the rear of your truck are air shocks. Tube shocks do NOT hold any weight. They simply control how much bounce there is in your suspension. You can take any brand new tube type shock, heavy duty or not, & fully compress it with your hands, so how would you expect it to hold up the rear of your truck? Ain't gonna happen. You need to look at air bags, air shocks, or adding either an additional helper spring (overload spring) or adding an additional leaf spring.

RE: THE HEAVY DUTY F150 HAS ARRIVED - First report ...

Nice truck. You optioned it out exactly as I would have except for the color. My current truck is black & factoried out with lots-o-factory bling which I have learned to hate. Enjoy yours....

RE: JAYCO TOTAL DISMANTLE

I had the EXACT same problem with a 2 yr old Jayco 165, except mine was the front wall. Almost half the floor needed replacing. I purchased the camper brand new, so I know how it was taken care of. The walls sit on the floor which leaves the edges of the floor exposed to the elements. An extremely poor design. I got absolutely NOTHING from Jayco. Another serious issue with mine was the fact that the black tank had a capacity of only 11 gals yet they plumbed the tub to it. Imagine to my surprise when taking a shower & having the black tank backup on my feet. The gray tank had a capacity of 37 gals which was plumbed only to the sink. The black tank sat under the tub so rather than run the drain lines from the tub to the gray tank, it was simpler to run it to the black tank. I had to redo the plumbing myself to make it right. I'll NEVER own another Jayco product & vow to bad mouth them every chance I get in hopes of averting someone else buying such a poorly designed unit. These are issues you wouldn't know about until AFTER you already owned it.
