RE: Fairbanks Camping

We stayed at Riverview in North Pole in June and found that it was a decent place. Everything worked and it was clean. They also have a RV wash that is no charge.

RE: What to expect driving to Alaska from Montana

I must have taken a three month trip in an alternate universe! :h
As another poster noted, Destruction Bay to Beaver Creek leaves much to be desired but so did the Tok Cutoff. 500 miles out of 10,000. Some of the interstate I traveled on was rougher than much of the AK Highway

RE: Need info on roads

We did the trip up the Alcan and back down the Cassiar. Nowhere near the horror tales some like to tell, the Tok Cutoff and the stretch of the Alaska highway from Haines Junction to Tok required slowing down for the condition of the road (frost heaves), the construction zones have a lot of dust and the Cassiar was wet and slick where they were working around Dease Lake, but I would go again knowing what I know today. We did get a sizeable rock tossed through the back window of our toad going through the chip and seal between Kulane Lake and Beaver Creek, but as other have mentioned it happens on the interstate also.

Slide Topper Awnings Edge Wear

Both of my slide topper awnings have a small 1" section on their leading edge where they connect to the coach that the vinyl is coming loose from the canvas. Given this is constantly exposed when not in storage and is never rolled up I figure that the vibration in the wind and age is causing this.
I am thinking about using a small piece of Eternabond to sandwich this area to stabilize this. Any reason not to?

RE: Cassiar Hwy to Stewart/Hyder

Thanks everyone for the input, we are now at Mt. Shadow RV south of the worst of the destruction in the Dease Lake area. I would agree that the road is better than the Tok to Kluane Lake section of the AK highway and the guidance you provided was correct.
The only hair raising part of it was they were adding another layer in one spot, it was raining and the 6"-12" of new gravel in the right lane was running over into the none too generous left lane they had us traveling in. To keep the rear dual out of the very soft shoulder I had to "feel" for the mound and graze it without running up on it for several hundred feet.
Hope the #%$@# bears show up after all that and a filthy RV too. :)

RE: crossing border

I do not have a DUI but back in early June while inside the Customs station filling out the paper work for my temporary shotgun license and paying my $25CA fee, I was behind someone who did and they were not having a good time of it with the Canadian immigration agent.
I did not overhear how recent the DUI was.

Cassiar Hwy to Stewart/Hyder

We are currently in Whitehorse for a couple of days and then heading South and are considering taking the Cassiar to Stewart/Hyder but understand there are several long stretches of construction. According to the weather forecasts for the region it is going to rain a lot on the northern half of the route today and Tuesday.
My question to those of you that have taken that route this year, if it was extremely wet would you travel that route again?
Thanks

RE: Traveling with with propane on?

We travel with the propane on, but turn the fridge off while refueling, hang the TV antenna warning flag on the rear view monitor to remember to turn it back on after leaving the pump.

RE: Border crossing

We crossed at Sweetgrass/Coutts on 6/22 with a shotgun, went inside and was out and on our way in 15-20 minutes after paying the $25 CA licensing fee. The bear spray (labeled and approved) was not an issue.
Usual questions about alcohol and tobacco, all handled in a very professional and crisp manner.

RE: Never break a good sealed seam? Roof time...

Just be sure that nobody has used silicone on your seams, the RV place that "touched-up" the front seam along the cap used a silicone based product and Eternabond won't stick to that. Had to remove all the silicone sealant and sand down to fiberglass in order to get a good seal.
Rest of the job was rather straightforward, good scrubbing allow to completely dry and apply over the seam and existing caulking. Once it is down, it stays down.

RE: had Koni's installed.. Thoughts

I just had 4 FSD's installed recently and did a short test drive over a section of interstate with multiple bridge expansion joints. Seems much better, having crossed them in the past.
Getting ready to conduct a 12,000 mile test and will update as that progresses.
$159 each at http://www.precisionframe.com.

RE: hiway 126 oregon

Have taken this drive in the MH towing, not a problem. Just don't plan on burning the road up. Lot's of curves.

RE: tiffin vs newmar

We did significant research in 2001-2002 before buying the Phaeton, we have been very happy and the only major repair was chassis related (Chassis AC compressor).
Our final decision came down to Kountry Star vs. Phaeton in a dead heat, wife liked the Tiffin fabrics better.
You can't go wrong with either but if I were to buy another new one it would be a Tiffin based on the performance so far of the Phaeton.

RE: Bilstien////Koni??????

I just put on Koni FSD's to replace the factory Bilstiens and took a short 50 mile test drive that required crossing 4 bridges that have reasonably rough expansion joints. MUCH better, but will provide more info after a couple of months use.

RE: MICHELIN XZE TIRES

Replaced my XRV's with XZE's last year and put about 8,000 on them.
No trouble and the ride seemed better than the XRV's.

RE: DuoTherm help? No furnace mode.....

Had a similar problem while in New England last fall, the first night it got down cold enough to run the furnaces.
Turns out the zone controller was losing its program that told it what the possible modes of operation were. I was able to follow the manual instructions and reprogram it and it would hold the program as long as it was left in the propane mode, and would even sometimes hold it when changing modes, but then it would be gone.
Replaced the zone control thermostat when I got a chance and that cured the problem.
