RE: GMC 2500HD vs. 3500HD

The AAM 1150 axle is rated at about 10.9K pounds per AAM's website. The AAM 1050 is only a few hundred pounds less rating (don't recall the exact figure). GM has been rating those axles much lower for years in their literature, so they are just a bit higher than the load capacity of the stock rims and tires.

RE: GMC 2500HD vs. 3500HD

The rear axle is different. Looks the same on the outside but the tube is thicker on the 3500.Not unless they've changed the axles in the new model year. GM has been using AAM model 1150 axles in both for years when optioned with a big block or diesel. They use the AAM 1050 with the vortec 6000 HD trucks. Both axles are rated far above the tire/rim capacities by AAM, even though GM does not list them as such.
on edit....BenK's link also shows the brakes to be the same size in both 2500HD and 3500 models.

RE: GMC 2500HD vs. 3500HD

The GM 2500HD and 3500 trucks are built on the same frame and use the same axles. The 3500 single has an extra leaf spring and tires/rims with a bit more load capacity. You also cannot get the 3500 with the 6.5 foot box.

U.P. (June 25-28, 2009)

That's right rv.netters....We hope you can "Make the U.P. rally". We had a great time visiting Mr. and Mrs. Mik at the homestead in "the middle of nowhere, north central Wisconsin" last summer and thought, wouldn't it be neat to start a rally somewhere between us? Michigan's U.P. is a beautiful summertime destination, with lots to see and nice weather to boot. We know there will be at least 2 rigs there, but hope maybe a few more rally fans will join us. We are finalizing details with the campground, but here are the basics....
Dates: June 25-28, 2009
City of Gladstone Campground
Rates are currently listed at a mere $20 a night for full hook-ups.
Map of the campground (large PDF file)
More info to follow...............
If you are interested, please post and/or send me a PM. We'll probably have to do reservations individually, but Mrs. Mik is checking on further info regarding that. Thanks for looking on behalf of bluenote, Eeyore66, Mrs. Mik and Mr. Mik.

RE: Duramax Fuel Filter replacement

Get a strap wrench large enough to fit around the fuel filter, just make sure to unplug the wiring harness which goes to the WIF sensor on the bottom before you take the filter off. I remove the 2nd battery to make it easier to reach the filter. If you are very careful, you can remove the WIF sensor without the special wrench, but you may want to pick one up. Reverse the process, prime it and go.

RE: car wash for pickup?

I've found I can generally use the touchless washes with no issues, but don't mess with the soft-cloth because the fabrics grab my mirrors and want to pull them out from the folded down position.

RE: Who can stand up?

Jason,
I went back and looked at the brochure from when we bought ours and it said 12'9". However, I'm sure 13' is probably closer to true. In fact, since I installed vent covers over the living room and bedroom vents, I'm sure it's at least as high as that. I look for a sign of 13'6" minimum for bridges.

RE: 2001 Chevy Duramax deisel water pump replacement?

I had mine replaced (also a 2001) at about 125K miles. Same type of symptoms as yours and there had previously been absolutely zero antifreeze smell. The major issue with replacing the water pump on your truck is there is a special tool to remove the harmonic balancer (a necessary step to get everything off). I had it done at a small repair shop and they even had to rent the tool for a day from their tool supplier. If you are handy and can get the harmonic balancer tool, you should be able to do it yourself.

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

rob,
Now I'll give my disclaimer. If you don't drive a fair amount of miles yearly (I drive around 25K a year), the diesel may very well never pay off. If you are towing heavy, they sure are nice though.

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

As well dont diesel oil changes and general maintenance cost more than a gas engine ie, oil changes, tune ups, brakes, suspension, filters, injectors etc. I am only asking as I only know by what Im told from friends that drive them.Good follow up questions...
Oil changes: my big block took 7.25 quarts, my diesel takes 10 quarts and the change interval is significantly longer with my diesel, so it's less per year in oil change costs.
Tune Ups: that's a gasser thing, what are you gonna tune up on a diesel?
Brakes, Suspension: those are the same on an equivalent chassis, regardless of the engine, so that's a wash.
Filters: air filter is the same, oil filter for me is the same price, fuel filter is more, but not as much as what i save in oil change costs yearly.
Repair Costs: for standard things like belts and hoses, a wash...for major engine work, the one area where the diesel may cost you more. However, when I bought mine, the warranty was nearly 3 times as long on the engine, so some of that liability is offset by the better warranty.
Have fun out there towing with whatever you use.

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

OK, but the figures I gave were more like 6 to 8 mpg. I drive 25K a year, so that's a noticeable savings in yearly mileage. I'm not saying you made the wrong choice, or should change your preference. However, a couple of the statements you made were inaccurate.

....I also get good milage having a lower profile rig 12.5 at 60 mphI get 12 mpg at 60 with mine, so the profile is only one factor.

RE: Who can stand up?

For all of you who can stand up, how tall is your 5th wheels? Are they the ones that look like your truck is transporting a 2 storey house down the road cause they are so freaking tall?I believe ours is rated at 12'8" exterior height at it's highest point.

RE: Who can stand up?

I'm 6'3" and can stand up all the way to the front closet in our 5er (in signature). Right at the front closet, I can touch the ceiling with my head. I believe the clearance is rated at 6'6" or 6'8" for most of our front bedroom.
