RE: On my Way: Death Valley, Mojave, Josuah Tree

rabbitangel, This is the problem with your routing efforts is Altadena, you aren't sure if you are going to stop there coming or going. It makes a big different in routing, mileage and camping along the way. If it was me I would go this way: Pinnacles NM to Altadena- 291 miles Altadena to Joshua Tree, Cottonwood Entrance-157 miles Exit Joshua Tree thru the Oasis or Indian Cove entrances on the north side of Joshua Tree to Death Valley-271.5 miles Most of this routing is interstate and no matter how one route the place you want to see your going to have some grades( 4-10%) of some type to climb. There are several routing possibles, but again Altadena is the problem, before or after Joshua Tree. If you tell me for sure about Altadena I could help you much better, for there are many places to see and stay (some are free).

RE: Getting to Death Valley

Hello iradi8, Death Valley is one of my favorite places. The 190 going through Towne Pass is a bit steep so going up will be slow. Make sure that you top off your tank before getting there for gas/diesel will run about a 1.50 more per gallon inside the park. Here's a link for current Road Conditions inside DV and this Link for DV weather. Furance Creek is the only place inside DV that you can buy diesel/gasoline and Stovepipe Wells has gas only. Scotty's Castle no longer has diesel/gasoline so top off before going there.I would suggest that you go to the Truck Camper forum and read many trip reports listed in the Truck Camper Trip Report sticky on Death Valley. If I can be of further help just PM me or post another question here. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Death-Valley-part-3/Death-Valley2-105/401219048_3g7Tn-M.jpg

RE: Grand canyon trip planning

rodtermaat , Don't worry about getting in park campsite at the north rim. For there is plenty of room in the next door Kaibab Forest, we payed a visited last Sept/Oct to this area. Forest Road22 is 4 miles outside of the main entrance of the North Rim. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep2-333/702952584_F3U8r-M.jpg Once at FR22 and FR462 you can head anywhere for camping,we found a long unused spot down FR766 http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/NorthRim/Tuweep2-360/702956765_mugVJ-M.jpg You can use the dumps in the North Rim even if you don't camp there. A different place along the north rim is the Tweep/Toroweap area This is a rustic area with no rail between you and the Grand Canyon. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-Of-2009/06600016/688811901_QocDu-M.jpg This place sports one split level campground that has on site vaulted toilet, table and fire pit at each site(1st come 1st severed) Our 1st site http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-Of-2009/Tuweep-706/677946626_unfWS-M-2.jpg Our 2nd site http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-Of-2009/Tuweep1-099/682731959_jwgkG-M.jpg Tuweep/Toroweap can be reached from 3 possible route: Fredonia,AZ along Hwy 389 to CR109 and head south for 1 miles of graded dirt road.We exited Tuweep this way. Last Chance Get Away of 2009 part5

Last Chance Get away of 2009 Our original plan was to visit Yosmite National Park and explore the surrounding area, but due to the spreading fire we change our plans at the time. After much discussion and some Internet searching it was decided to go a couple of areas that we hadn’t ever been to and re-visit a couple of national parks we’ve been to before. On to Pipe Springs National Monument Part5 September 30,2009 Once again nature has treated us to another helping of a glorious morning. We didn’t go as far into the forest as yesterday, for night had fallen before we had even reach FR22. Julie was doing her usual morning meal making while I stepped outside to snap a few photos. Our two neighbors were still hiding in their rigs, one of them we had met out at Cape Royal yesterday. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767567863_h7T7V-M.jpg With Julie’s special hot black brew (which always wakes me up), eggs and bacon on her fineness breakfast china (paper plate) indeed a fit morning meal. This morning was to be a quick run to the North Rim campground to dump tanks, refresh our water supply and pick up a couple of things from the campground store. It turned out not to be as quick as planned, for nature had another surprise waiting for us. Shortly after re-entering the NP laid before us was a heard of Bison only they looked not quite right, a little on the small size for bison. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767567762_MEjie-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767570781_nhWZw-M.jpg Video:Devil Horned Critters A short few miles brought us to the campground and the dumps, fresh water and store items. On the road some trees had been remove that had fallen across the park road during the night due to the winds. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767571223_kdrAe-M.jpg Julie wanted to call her kids and the only place to get cell service was back at the lodge area. Calls were made and as we headed back for or rig what happens, but non other than a fire alarm and the clearing of the lodge. As it was just a monthly drill as require by law, most of the people there were very casual about this. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767576136_L8ksv-M.jpg Video;Lodge Fire Drill Finally on the road, heading out of the park only to stop and gaze at the hybrids blocking the road out. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767602442_j7NnE-M.jpg Video There be More A fellow Tcer pulled in behind us to take a look at the shaggy beasts. These folks were from Oregon and homeward bound. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767581788_7uS2X-M.jpg Before our final ado to this excellent area and diving into the forest to Fredonia, its sign picture time. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767602738_5Gwt6-S.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767603158_G5wgE-S.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767603294_HXbQa-S.jpg A quick stop back at FR22 and FR462, for the Canadian couple we had met were up. He was looking under the hood for a problem; between the two of us we found a leaky vacuum line. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767606270_gATJ8-M.jpg The following photos are of Forest Road 22 going to Fredonia. Crossing the Kaibab Plateau we saw many future side trips along the way. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767606478_kjpke-M.jpg Forest Road22 runs through a meadow area on its wandering route with locals looking at us as we cruse on by. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767606825_ZRbEy-M.jpg As we travel to lower elevation the Aspens disappear and nothing but pine trees surround us. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767611010_oKdCz-M.jpg Traveling along we came upon Big Spring Field Station, what a gig, living in the middle of this beautiful forest and getting paid for it. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767611602_Y8rFq-M.jpg Soon the dirt road of adventure is gone as well for the pine trees and shrubs step up along the road. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767617150_SRTPg-M.jpg Our road of asphalt runs straight across the high desert area of White Stage Flat towards distance mountains and Fredonia. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767621629_TzPNj-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767622396_DXZzg-M.jpg Once again refueling in Fredonia and making a quick run into Kanab to find a hardware store, I needed a small wire round brush to clean the burner in the refrigerator. Making our turn in Fredonia towards Hwy 389 there’s this store on the corner boasting of no china junk here. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/767627528_f2Nbz-M.jpg Thankfully the distance to Pipe Springs NM flowed quickly by, I was getting tried and looking toward an early end of today’s adventure. A space was easily an acquired in the Kaibab Paiute rustic campground. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768615183_coUjH-M.jpg After paying the camp host that goes by the name of Montana, dinner was in order and a good nights sleep. Morning came with the sound of a Bobcat loader and men working on the latest improvements. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768620075_zZEqM-M.jpg On our way out I stopped to thank Montana for the use of his ladder, had to clean out the pilot flame burner. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768623940_riWh4-M.jpg Being so close to Pipe Spring Nation Monument the truck engine didn’t even warm up, but the day was warming up. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768624845_zuTCW-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768636603_YbESi-M.jpg Once inside friendly staff members, who will answer endless questions from all the school kids, greet you. Displays of long past life are well laid out for the visitor to gaze upon. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768637036_G4tM3-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768637016_aibLp-M.jpg Out to open space exhibits and I do mean open spaces, a small fort is located way back out there somewhere. Julie pointed out this old wagon with a little work would make a good trailer for our truck. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768637465_HLxW9-M.jpg Wandering along the pathway towards the garden area native desert shelters are there for anyone to try out. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768670374_nPbcX-M.jpg Entering the garden area one of the employees was showing off what is commonly called “Indian Broom” stalk. He talked about the different vegetables they had grown here, for this was the end of the season crop and we could pick and take anything we wanted for free. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768671264_A5ZFi-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768670547_aFTSk-M.jpg From garden’s delight to spring fed ponds for our fort tour would begin soon as kids poured out of the side door. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768674721_mPsTk-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768675248_Na7xY-M.jpg One of the rangers’s made the call for the next tour of Winsor Castle and a bunch of us gathered inside the fort courtyard to see the inner workings of this place. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768678937_hgQES-M.jpg Video Winsor Castle (Pipe Springs Fort) The first stop is the kitchen, equipped with wood burning stove, table on which plates were upside down to keep dirt out and chairs turned out for praying before meal was eaten. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768679221_yaHDR-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768679154_g7nH6-M.jpg The room next to the kitchen was built right over the spring flow to protect it incase of any attacks. Zipping on through town, up the hill and on past Fort Zion, haven't stopped in there yet. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768709922_S8Veq-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768716174_hxiRn-M.jpg Entering Springdale we soon ran into some road construction, a widening project. Julie and I rarely make reservations for a campsite; in this case there was no room at either campground in Zion. Dropping in at the visitor center was an adventure in finding parking, it was jammed. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768716990_hkCh8-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/768720255_UJiKK-M.jpg Heading back to Rockville for a BLM spot called Mosquito Cove at about mile maker 24 on Hwy9.
