RE: Repeater v. Internet sharing and a high gain antenna.

I use VOIP all the time with the DD WRT set to repeater mode with not problems. I also use video conferencing, also with no effects. Now if the wife goes online and she starts watching videos I will throttle back the video conferencing so we all have a problem free experience. You have to look at the VOIP your using and see what it actually uses in bandwidth. For me my options start at 100kbps and go up to 2mbps.

RE: Repeater v. Internet sharing and a high gain antenna.

You've got me curious about bandwidth being cut. OK... CG WiFi is running nicely today and I did a test running it across an ethernet bridge to my router as well as directly connected via my PC NIC. The results are interesting. I used This test tool to get the numbers. Running across from my Lenovo NIC to a Cradlepoint router to a Linksys bridge I get about 1100 kb/s download and about 95 kb/s upload. Running direct from my Lenovo NIC I get about 1100 kb/s download but 256 kb/s upload. So for my config the receive performance is not impacted but the transmit is cut by more than half. Anyone have an idea to explain this? I sure know how I'm running my softphone from now on. Hence one of the reasons for my thread. :) ;) I think I'm going with the external adapter and booster approach with a directional antenna. I believe those numbers may have been wrong for a couple of reason. You gave examples of your upload SPEED (how fast you get/send that 1 meg file) cut in half, not your bandwidth. Let's say you have 802.11g and your throughput is cut in half, now they say it's capable of 54 mbps, yet real world you will average about 22 mbps. Cut that in half and you're looking at 11 mbps. One user download/uploading a 1 meg file is well within the bandwidth limits and should have no effect on your download/upload speeds. That's IF your running in repeater mode. Since you have a Cradle point router you should be running in client mode and your bandwidth is NOT cut in half. Since your download speed was not cut in half it's clear there was some other thing effecting your change in speed. Doing speed tests at a campground is not very accurate unless you're doing it at 3am. You may have conducted a test when someone decided to upload some large files. Which would not be an effect on your bandwidth, but on the campground bandwidth. Again if you are not maxing out your half of the bandwidth limit it will have NO EFFECT on speeds. Bandwidth is tricky as there are many things that effect it. they use speed tests to measure bandwidth which gives you a estimated measure of the bandwidth, but that's not always accurate when trying to figure out where the bottle neck is. For example: My in laws arrived last night and my office is next to the guest room, so I moved my play station and computer to my bonus room on the other side of the house. On that side of the house I have to connect to my Linksys router with DD WRT installed, which then repeats to my Apple router. Doing speed test showed no lost of speed up or down. I also tested ping and jitter with no problems. There was no effect using the PS3 even with more 12 guys playing and 5 guys talking. Again for the OP what are you planning to do that cutting your bandwidth will cause you problems? You can use client mode and use another router to be wireless in your camper with no loss of bandwidth. Using repeater mode makes it easy and you only need one router.

RE: Verizon Droid??? Anyone have one yet???

for the camera bug, i also read that article about the 24.5 day & date stamp messing with the auto focus, seems to be a really weird bug, i'm getting good pictures using the 2mp setting and grainy pix if i use the 5mp setting i don't use a phone camera to take award winning landscape shots, or action news photography, simply put no phone cam i have ever used has a big enough lens to allow proper lighting on a 5mp image sensor. I use a phone's camera function because its handy, because its there, because i can take pictures i would not have otherwise, while mfg & telco's like to cite camera specs in phone adv, camera specs do not come into my reason for selecting a phone to carry & use. You're certainly making a lot of excuses for poor performance. my Droid has rebooted once or twice, i have had some apps that i DL & tried out that do not seem to be fully compatible with android 2.0 and stop responding and give a forced close error, but the phones other functions were not affected Such a short time and you have reboots and apps that don't work. as for store models, HOW many hundreds of people have handled them, played with settings, poked this & that, sent msgs, played vids, DL free apps from the market place to check them out ? The phone is a week old and people come into and play with it simulating what a month or two months use? Yet, it's locked up and not working, Lame really lame. I go to best buy and all the phones and computers work, but a one week old iPhone killer is not working? ( not my idea, but the HUGE advertising campaign from verizon) i have not had my phone freeze or needed to pull the battery. Common problem, do a little research. At least put a disclaimer that you're compensated (free phones) by Verizon for your opinion and don't delete every time it's mentioned that you do.

RE: Verizon Droid??? Anyone have one yet???

I'm confused by the comment about Verizon looking at the 28 day camera issue and the comment "you can't multitask on the Verizon network". Shouldn't these be Motorola issues? Dave There's a rounding-error bug in the camera driver's autofocus routine (which uses a timestamp) that causes autofocus to behave poorly on a 24.5-day cycle. That is, it'll work for 24.5 days, then have poor performance for 24.5 days, then work again. Motorola problem. Verizon CDMA/EVDO network doesn't allow you to do multiple things at one time. At&t network does.. In another words you can't be on the phone talking to someone and looking up directions online, sending/receiving emails or booking tickets at the same time. A much more important multi tasking function then have 14 apps running at the same time. Verizon problem.

RE: Verizon Droid??? Anyone have one yet???

There are many problems I have found with the Droid and have been confirmed with many users posting what I found. Sadly, my posts keep getting deleted for some reason. I will try again. Camera problems for the Motorola Droid are numerous. Here is a comparison of photos taken with an iPhone and photos taken with the better spec'd Droid. Verzion claims they are fixing the good day/bad day photo glitch. This basically is the phone will take good photos for 28 day (I believe that was the number), then it switches and takes bad photos for the same 28 days. This does not address the problem with the poor quality photos, so their good photos are still not good. The camera freezes are another problem that I experienced with the Droid phone I was using. Many reports confirmed the problem I had and that was freezing up, requiring you to remove the battery. One of the 2 motorola droid phones at the Verizon store was locked up and the one I used locked up after about 20 minutes of use. Another problem I experienced and confirmed by other users is that is slows down during usage and requires a restart. There are ways to correct this by removing certain apps, but then you lose function. The keyboard is pretty flimsy and confirmed as not just my feeling but others. It's large, heavy and very cheap feeling. I found myself and previously stated in my deleted post, that I was drawn to the HTC droid. I thought the screen was sharper when compared to the Motorola. It is powered by the lesser OS and lesser power. A much better form factor. Doesn't feel cheap. Like I previously stated I would wait for the second generation of both the phone and the OS. Both these droid phones are really rough. Either underpowered or in the Motorola version really buggy. The apps are few and the good ones are even harder to find. Then of course you can't multitask on the Verizon network, which is strange. The HTC with some upgrades could be a really nice smart phone.

RE: Repeater v. Internet sharing and a high gain antenna.

Yes in repeater mode it will cut the bandwidth in half. What do intent to do? Most people don't come close to maxing out any sort of bandwidth version. Using WRT it allows you to boost your signal(on certain routers) and set up your own hub inside the RV. I've tried both with and without the repeater and I get the same speeds. A repeater would be good if you want your own hub, with your own security and have more then one computer. You can set up WRT as a booster and hard wire into it. That way you loose no bandwidth, but again what are you planning to do to max out that much bandwidth?

RE: If you thought dealing with DISH was bad, try VERIZON!

Put your phone in field test mode and it will determine what your local tower is using. Directions here for certain phones. No I don't work for verizon.

RE: Firefox Issue with Mac Mail

Your theme is probably the problem.. It looks like you installed Chromifox, which is still a pending version. Go back to the default theme and that should correct it. When you start changing things that are not programmed by the people at Firefox you're bound to get problems. Try removing adds ons until it corrects itself. Remember add ons are only as good as the person that programmed it and sometimes that's a 14 year old kid.

RE: A True PC vs. Mac Usage Comparison

Is the hardware and software in a MAC really worth the 2 or 3 times the price or is it for exclusivity of the OS? or status? Not demeaning the product, but rather just curious. Not the hardware is not 2-3 times the price. You have to compare hardware to hardware, not some POJ $300 computer with a Mac. Compare a Sony Viao with a Mac and tell me what you get...

RE: Question for a Geek

No they can't. For a couple of reasons. 1. They don't have access to track it unless they get a call. 2. Privacy issues. 3. The phone company needs to be contacted with the correct court orders and then they locate your phone, they can turn the signal up or down and get you into a certain area. Then they roll out their tech truck, it's really cool, and narrow the signal down. Get a lojack or an iphone. The iPhone will allow you to track it to within a block or so.. There are also a number of other services you can use and install in your camper.

Another great one, Market Share The most recent I could find. Well here is something different. You're truly late to the market share argument. We put that to bed months ago on many different threads. Apple's OS share is growing rapidly, like it not.

RE: A True PC vs. Mac Usage Comparison

because consumers don't want a geek OS that comes in a million versions. You guys a MS should not be bashing people on offering a million versions of something.... :) Good one Creeper, but in reality there are no more than 250,000 versions of THAT OTHER OS. :B I don't have a MAC because I'm poor and I don't like their mouse. It needs MO BUTTONS. I love my 4 Button Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer. In fact it is the first version they came out with years ago and I found one for the wife too. Man can not live on 2 button and a wheel alone. If one has the money, then buy a MAC and give it a test drive. $599 and use the keyboard and mouse you already have. Pretty cheap... I've always hated Apple mice, but the new one has gotten my attention. I need to play with it more, but so far it does what I need. I might even buy one. I too need many, many buttons..

RE: The Droid cometh!

Both the iPhone and Android phones had good and bad reviews at launch, but the reviews were mostly positive--that is a fact. I appreciate your early review of the Droid. Many peopele will want to hear about your experience after using it for at least a few weeks. I don't think I've seen a moderator come under attack like you have on this message string, and I don't think you deserve it. I really don't think they were attacks. He posted a review of the Droid and I posted my thoughts on the droid. Now I don't have any loyalty to Verizon and I'm certainly not a member of the Verizon Customer Council where they give you phones to try. I tried to become a member, but only select people can become members and have access to try out products offered by Verizon. Android phones will progress in the future and hopefully they will give me something I can use on Verizon. The reviews have been better for another just released Verizon phones and I'll be heading up there soon to try it out. Now if I can just get on the council, so I can swap out phones.
