RE: HONDA 2000 GENERATOR

When I bought my "twins" several years ago, I asked my local dealer, who I have bought quite a few things from, to match (or even come close) and he told me the best he could do was $999. Since I would have had to pay tax of $70 each (at that time), I bought them for $879 each from Mayberry's and saved $180. When the local guy found out I bought them, he sounded a little offended, but I pointed out that I gave him a chance and he wouldn't budge. Last year I bought a Troy-Bilt Horse rorotiller from him and he was ready to deal....

RE: My F150 EcoBoost experience

I don't think 21 mpg with a truck is bad, with as much power as the Eco Boost has. I bet it's a lot better than any of the V-8's with that much power will get. According to the service manager at our local Ford dealer, mileage is much better on summer gas formulation. Another thing is the engine has only 1200 miles. My work truck (11 F-250 6.2) furl mileage went up significantly after I got 15,000 miles on it. I bet the Eco Boost will be the same.

RE: F-250 and trailer brake problem

Just in case these are two separate issues. Here's an old trick that used to fix the "AC going out" problem on the Super Duties from about six or seven years back. At random times, the climate control would go out and you might have heat coming from the defrost or "who knows what". If you would turn your headlights off and on and also turn them to the automatic setting, somehow it would get the climate control back in line. I know. Sounds weird. And it may not have anything to do with yours. But it was semi-common on the mid-6.0L models and this trick worked like a charm. My AC went out yesterday and I am leaving for vacation, tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!!!!!!!! To the OP; Have you tried other trailers with electric brakes? I have 3 trailers that have brakes and I used to get a fault message "Trailer Disonnected". I solved the problem by attaching a separate 12 gauge ground wire to both the frame of the trailer and the frame of the truck. If this wire is connected, I have no more problems. If the wire is not connected I get the message. It's an easy inexpensive thing to try. You could probably use a booster cable on a good ground on truck and trailer to see if it works.

RE: Any campground OPEN in April around Watertown, NY?

Association Island opens in mid-May. Old Forge, Utica and Lake Luzerne are all a long way from Watertown. The only thing I can recommend is that some state parks will allow you to park on the sites, but the dump stations, water and electric are probably not available until they open for the season. There is a Cracker Barrel at Exit 46 that normally allows overnight parking as well as Walmart at Exit 45. Sorry I couldn't be more help...

RE: Hello.

My advice is to keep looking, find a trailer you like, then ask for opinions on here. It's a lot easier to comment on a certain trailer. Otherwise, everyone will recommend what they own as "the best". When you are looking, I recommend laying in the bed, sitting at the table, standing in the shower and sitting on the toilet (just sitting...). Make sure they all fit everyone in your camping family. Have whoever does the cooking make sure they kitchen is adequate for their needs. Mkae sure you have adequate storage and sleeping quarters. Keep in mind the size youngsters will be in a few years. Good luck and welcome to RV.Net!

RE: 2012 Ram 2500 retractable bed covers

I have a Ford, but I love my Retrax cover. Mine is 7 tears old and looks like brand new. I mathinking of trading trucks and it will go on the new truck when I do. Before I bought mine in 2005, i did a lot of research and, at that time, I thought the Retrax was the best value. The things I liked most about it are that it can be locked anywhere andthat the box that the cover rolls into has a track, so the cover does not touch itself when it is rolled up. There are no mechanisms or springs to break. Retrax claims it will hold 200 lbs (and I believe it!) I don't know if they still do it, but when I bought my Retrax, mentioning dieselplace.com.

RE: from I81 to I87 I84 or I88

Montreal a mess???? Hard to believe... I live 60 miles from Montreal. Of all the cities I've driven in, it rates up there as one of the worst, although GPS and knowing where I'm going has helped immensely! I can see your point, but, personally, I would rather fight Montreal traffic for an hour, than all the hills, tolls and rough roads the other way. JMHO

RE: from I81 to I87 I84 or I88

It looks to me like you are almost straight north of Quebec City. Have you ever thought of staying on I-81 all the way up to 401 in Ontario to 20 in Quebec? You would miss a lot of traffic and a lot of hills. The only tolls would be the 1000 Islands Bridge.

Happy to hear that. I am headed the same way in a couple weeks.

RE: Just purchased a New F-350 XLT Power Stroke LB CC

Congratulations on the new truck! If I could offer advice, it would be to follow the Ford maintenance directions. Use Motorcraft filters and make sure the lubricants meet the specs from Ford. Since I do my own maintenance, I installed a Fumoto valve to make oil changes easier. Stay away from aftermarket tuners. The new diesel has more than ample power right off the showroom floor.

RE: From class A to Fifth wheel

I made the change from Class A to fifth wheel back in 1998. The major reason for my change was $$$$. I am in a position that I need (or want) a pickup, so i upgraded to a heavy duty pickup, that would handle a fifth wheel. Instead of depreciating a $150,000 (or more) DP, I am depreciating a $45,000 trailer. I am not keeping up another engine/drivetrain, that got about 6,000 miles per year. As far as someone saying that a fifth wheel is hard to back up, try backing a MH/toad combination. i agree with most of the other advantages of the fifth wheel, but there are things I miss about the MH, like an onboard generator that could be started without going outside (available, but not popular in fifth wheels), automatic levelers, the availability of a bathroom for passengers while driving and not having to get out to get to the living quarters. There are definitely advantages to both and no right or wrong; just what is best for you.

RE: Power cord ?

Unless your trailer is equipped with 2 AC units or you are running an AC unit and washer/dryer at the same time, you really don't need 50 amps. I bought a 50 amp to 30 amp adaptor cord (similar to this one. It has worked well for me,

RE: leveling with 1" X 8" boards

I "laminated" 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood together for leveling boards. I find the laminated pieces much stronger than a regular board. If I am off level very little, putting the laminated piece under one tire raises that side of the trailer about 3/4". Putting a piece under both tires on one side raises that side 1.5". I find that under 3/4" off level is hard to detect.

RE: Can I parallel two 6volt with one 12 volt?

An option that no one has mentioned is installing a selector switch. Most have three selections; Bank A, Bank B or Off. With this you could use the two 6 volt batteries or manually switch to the existing 12 volt. You would also have to remember to switch while charging.

RE: Question about synthetic motor oil ?

I will preface this by saying that you should use what ever oil you feel comfortable with. After saying that, I, too used to use synthetic oil. I paid a premium price for it and have never had a problem with an engine that I used it in. I have used Mobil 1, Castrol Syntech and Rotella Synthetic (all which some people would say are not "true" synthetics). Now I have quit using synthetics for a couple reasons: 1. I work for the state DOT. We use state contract oil in all state equipment (except some new equipment that requires a certain oil during the warranty period). The oil on state contract is recycled oil. I have never seen an engine failure using the recycled oil. 2. A friend of mine bought a new truck about the same time I did (several years ago). I used syntheitic oil in mine, he used Walmart's brand of oil (the inexpensive stuff with the no name brand). He put almost 300,000 miles on that truck and never had any engine problems. Is synthetic better oil? I am almost certain it is. Is it needed or is it a waste of money? My opinion is that regular dino oil is sufficient (unless the manufacturer specifically states that synthetic is required).

RE: folding ladders

Why not buy a telescoping ladder. I bought a 12.5 ft that collapses down to 2 ft and weighs 30 lbs. we needed a loft ladder so it serves 2 functions: roof ladder and loft ladder. You can partially extend them. They go for 110 on ebay I agree with maryvillept. The telescoping ladder can easily be transported in a compartment, keeping them out of the elements. Although I love my folding, telescoping ladder, they are heavy and cumbersome. I feel the telecoping ladder is better for an RV. Here is a link for one at BJ's Wholesale: http://www.bjs.com/xtendclimb-8-12-aluminum-telescoping-ladder.product.205039?dimId=2000250

RE: goose neck vs 5th wheel hitch

Along with Ford vs. Chevy vs Dodge, motorhome vs. trailer, gas vs. diesel and a bunch of other topics, this has been debated (very passionatley sometimes!!!) for years. I doubt that either side is going to change the other sides mind. Maybe we can agree to disagree and admit that neither side is 100% correct?

RE: Bose TV

I saw the demo and it was awesome! THe only problem is when the TV dies, you have to replace both the TV and surround sound, since the surround sound is completely integrated into the TV. I guess I would rather buy the TV of my choice and the separate Bose Surround Sound System. It would probably be less expensive, too!

Ford X Plan Pin

Does anyone have a Ford X Plan pin number they are willing to give out? When I bought my present truck in 2005, I used the X Plan and was very happy with the whole deal. I would love to do it again. Thanks in advance!
