RE: Police cars

It's not totally off topic ;) Some people use police vehicle models to tow trailers....there aren't too many passenger cars anymore that are capable of towing very much. Plus, police vehicles are used to tow VDOT signs, radar speed boards, and equipment trailers.

RE: Police cars

Please don't read my post as Dodge bashing. I have no heart felt ties to Ford in any way. As a matter of fact, the vehicle I drive most often at work now is an Expedition....in short, it sucks! It wallows down the road, and barely gets out of it's own way. I had the last generation police package Tahoe, and it was way better (and more comfortable) to drive than the 07 Expedition.
Dodge has some awesome vehicles out right now. While I'm not a huge fan of the Chargers looks as a private vehicle, there is no denying it is the baddest looking cruiser to ever come out of Detroit. It really has an imposing stance when equipped with a light bar and police graphics. The Dodge definitely outhandles the Ford.....I won't even mention the Impalas since nobody I know likes driving them.
The thing about the Crown Vic is that it doesn't do anything great. With that said, it does do everything well....it's not an allstar, but it is consistent, rugged, and safe. The seats are terrible for a personal car....they are wide, flat, and kinda stiff. All those traits make the seats great for cops. Have you ever tried getting into a car with a gunbelt? That sucker makes you about eight inches wider than you really are....the Crown Vic has seats that are perfectly designed to fit uniformed cops. It's stuff like that that makes the Crown Vic THE choice for most agencies.
I don't think Ford has release any real information about the next Police Interceptor. They had a press release on Nov. 13th, but it just said they were going to have a car to replace the Crown Vic and that it would be more efficient, safer, more reliable, and better handling. They didn't mention what kind of drivetrain the car would have or what the handling specs. would be. There are other companies that are coming up with alternatives in the near future. Here's one that some may find interesting: Carbon Motors
I can't wait to see the 2011 cruisers come out from Ford, Chevy, Dodge, and Carbon Motors.

RE: Police cars

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I hope the new PI holds up as well as the current Crown Vics! We have a few of the Chargers, no thanks. Piece of junk. Falling apart and very uncomfortable especially with the MDC on the console.
-Lab
Oh brother. :R
I've not read one negative about the Charger police car, but of course, I'm sure I haven't read every report. Ford needed to come up with something new since the outgoing CV are currently behind GM and Dodge in the area of pursuit cars. Has anyone seen any pics of Ford's new car? If so, post a link and a story as I would be very interested in taking a look! Thanks.
I agree with colochoclab......my department bought a handful of the Chargers to test, but they did not hold up very well. They spent waaaay more time in the shop than the Crown Vics, and while they performed significantly better, the Chargers were not as comfortable during long shifts and they have some terrible blind spots. I've driven several Impalas and Chargers, and neither is on par with the Crown Vic for normal police work.
I doubt Ford will be using the Taurus. Police Departments nationwide have made it pretty clear they want full size rear wheel drive cars. While the Taurus would be plenty big enough, I doubt the awd platform would be widely accepted.....to many moving parts to hold up well to the constant abuse cruisers take. Just my opinion!

RE: Do Performance Chips Really Work?

Chips for diesels and turbocharged engines tend to produce significant power increases. For normally aspirated engines, the increase in power is negligible. I would guess you would be lucky to see a 15hp increase. As others have said, with a normally aspirated gas engine, about the only thing they can change is timing. The downside to that is you will then have to use premium fuel.

RE: 6.0 powerstroke diesel?

I was a 6.0 hopeful, Spotless Oasis report, Low milage, 07 engine in the truck. should't havve an issue.
1 word WARRANTY! Make sure what ever you get has WARRANTY!
My truck was waiting for me to work it I guess.
All at once, Oil cooler, EGR cooler, Head Gaskets.
Dealership even said very rare on the 07 series engine. But found ps gasket looked like it was tweaked at the orginal install.
Great Dealership, Studded the truck, and back on the road in 4 working days.
I think the EGR and Oil coolers die in pairs. I can't remember which is first in line, but once one is replaced, they generally replace both.

RE: Erratic blinkers

You probably have a bad bulb. Even if the filament is still good, the contacts may be worn and giving you an intermittent bulb failure.

RE: OUCH! Ford/GM/Dodge sales

I just checked under the hood, in fact; "The turbocharger is in the center of the engine, just above the V8 valley, where a carburetor would have sat in grandpa's truck."
Was there some devious plot to modify my engine when I wasn't looking?
IMO, it's all good if you buy American...but the above statement about the engine design just wasn't entirely accurate...
It's good that Ford will build their own deezul. Their relationship with Navistar has been "strained" the last few years. (I would personaly be reluctant to buy a first generation deezul from an inexperienced diesel engine builder.) It's also good that Ford did not require bailout loans, but I don't see anybody burning $20 bills because their bank took bailout funds, or not flying on airlines due to Gov't involvement, etc, etc, so I am not sure many GM customers will jump ship either. Thank God we live in a country that does protect us, our jobs, and our way of life. Imagine the alternative? Would anyone really want GM to go away? Then you could choose between Ford and To&^%ta (I could not bring myself to say that word). Most of us like what we like for some reason or other and are usualy reluctant to jump ship unless we have had a very bad experience with a brand...
Bill (nuthin' but GM in the driveway)
Your turbo sits in the middle of the engine, but the plumbing from the exhaust comes from the exhaust manifolds which are on the outside of both heads. The new Ford diesel is designed backwards with the exhaust manifolds and turbo sitting in the engine valley and the intakes sitting on the outside of the heads. It's incredibly innovative and I don't believe anyone has produced this type of reverse flow engine yet. I have my fingers crossed for Ford.....they sure could use a home run.

RE: EGT guage install???

I may be in the minority here, but I placed the egt probe in the exhaust plumbing between the driver's side manifold and the turbo. The temps I see are the same, and I was far less nervous drilling into the pipe vs. the manifold. The probe is held in place with a large hose clamp. I've had it for the last 5 years and have never had a problem. I bought my gauges and followed the instructions provided at Diesel Manor

RE: Michelin AT tire noise?

Those LTX AT-2 are really quiet. So are the Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO. Both are great tires. The REVO treadlife seems to last a little longer than the LTX AT-2 from what I've been told.
I have to agree that the LTX AT-2's are quite. I also found the Revo's to be quiet, but they got progressively louder as they wore. By the time I had them replaced the road noise was starting to annoy me. I really hope PopsRacer is wrong about the Michelin's not lasting as long as the Revo's. My Revo's only lasted about 40k miles. I got over 70k on the BFG's that came with my truck. If past history serves me well, the Michelins should last a pretty long time.

RE: 6.0 powerstroke diesel?

I have an early 2003 with just under 130,000 miles. I have had one injector and 2 ICP sensors replaced along with a handful of computer reflashes. They finally got the program right a few years ago and I haven't had anymore problems. The 6.0 may not be perfect, but my Excursion has been the best truck I have ever owned.

RE: Is my truck a lemon or is it behaving typically

I have owned 2 Suburbans (a 1991 K1500 and a 1995 K2500) and I could not keep the A/C's working in either of them. I think my 1991 went through at least 2 compressors, while my 1995 went through at least 3. The 1995 also needed all kinds of other A/C parts including rear A/C lines that rusted out. I'm not going to bash GM, but I am never surprised when I hear about GM trucks needing A/C repairs.

I don't think so, Ford is in the process of developing their own "in house" diesel for use in their HD trucks.

RE: Towing with an SUV-what is best?

As far as SUV's go, my choices would be (in this order):
1. Excursion diesel
2. Suburban 2500
3. Excursion gas
4. Suburban 1500
I have owned everything on the list except for the gas Excursion. All were great vehicles, but the diesel Excursion has been the best tow vehicle. If you need seating for 7, the Excursions and Suburbans cannot be beat.

I had no idea the 6.4 was so rough of fuel mileage. The numbers you guys are posting are what I would expect from a 38-40ft. class A with an 8.3L diesel.

RE: My F250 SD, - 4 Wheeel drive, front drive turning when off.

The hubs come off very easily. Once you have the wheel off, there is a single snap ring that holds the hub on. Sometimes you have to coax the hub off with a rubber mallet. Here is a link that might help:

RE: My F250 SD, - 4 Wheeel drive, front drive turning when off.

The vacuum hubs are actuated like a retractable pen.....the vacuum clicks them on when you shift into 4wd, then clicks them off when you shift back to 2wd. Does your AC blow out of the vents correctly? The reason I ask is because the vents work off the same vacuum as the 4wd. If you can turn the 4wd switch without your AC vents reverting to defrost, you probably do not have a leak.
Have you made sure both of your hubs are set to auto? The hubs are 2 position....lock or auto. If they are set to lock, the front differential would be spinning which would cause the front drive shaft to also spin.

RE: New Tires

I recently replaced my tires with the Michelin LTX A/T2's also and have been very happy with them. I did not notice the same issues you did, but as others have pointed out, new tires can take a bit of breaking-in to get them where they need to be.
