RE: Quality of forest river vs Coleman/fleetwood

OK, we had a 2004 Rockwood Premier (Forest River) and never had any real problem. When we were looking, the dealer had both Fleetwood and Rockwood on the same lot. We compared both. There were things I like better about the Fleetwood (mostly cosmetic differences) but couldn't justify the price difference for the those (Fleetwood was about $1400 more), and the Rockwood came with some nice add ons that the Fleetwood charged for. Anyway, we went with the Rockwood and were never sorry. Now the only real difference that I know about, but didn't effect me was the frame. It's been awhile so I'm trying to remember, but the frame on the Rockwood was I think a "C" channel and could not use a weight distribution hitch due to flexing. Someone will jump in and correct/give more info.....

RE: Bathrooms...

Good advise - thnx Just wish we had Rv dealers closer to take a look at stuff. doesn't looks like Bakersfield RV places or Lancaster sell Popups... That means LONG trips to LA greater area, and then there are a ton of dealers!! There is a small dealer in Ventura off the 101 that sells just popups... They are part of Crown Dodge and use the bottom portion of their parking lot. That is where my friend bought his used one. they have a few used and a bunch of new Colemans.

RE: Bathrooms...

We had a Rockwood Premier for 4 years and loved it. I'd still have it today if we didn't get the C (and only decided to get a Class C because we did a 10,000 mile cross country trip) We had the hot water package and the toilet/shower combo. Worked great. The curtains pulled around and privacy was never an issue. You can get some good deals on used highwalls out there. Our friends bought a 2006 Fleetwood Heritage (I think that's the model) in super condition for $7200 here in Ventura. It is the highwall with the closed shower and they really love it. Here is a http://www.rvtraderonline.com/find/listing/2007-FLEETWOOD-FLEETWOOD-SEQUOIA-96428553 in Riverside. I'd bet you could get them down further. Here's http://www.rvtraderonline.com/find/listing/2007-FLEETWOOD-SEQUOIA-96388409 but it is in AZ. Sounds like you will love camping in the popup rather than a hard walled trailer. You can open the bunks (the DW loved that part) and open the sides as well. We do miss that part of camping with ours.

RE: Backing with dinghy connected

I wonder how many vehicle front frames are rated for 15,000-30,000 lbs. towing capacity. Unbelievable, but after reading this thread I now know some people will try anything to keep from unhooking. I really think Bob n Deb was kidding.....didn't ya see the :B

RE: Storage Lot Cost

good thing you're not storing in California. to store my 23' trailer without all the amenities, except a security fence, would average around $80-$100/mth. that's for outside storage. that's in the Bay Area and the Sacramento Metro area. Yeah, isn't it nice getting that special "California price" :M I'm paying $135/mth for outside storage!!! The cheapest indoor space I could find is $11 per foot=$330/mth At least the place has 24 hr security, free dumps station, onsite mechanic, propane sales, & onsite RV wash

RE: NEED HELP...Madison is destroying our backyard!!!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have a side yard that I think I'll put in a dog run for her. Just got to cover up/hide some cable and wires first :E

RE: NEED HELP...Madison is destroying our backyard!!!

Some further info.: She is 10 mths old and VERY energetic. She gets walks everyday after I get home (morning just isn't an option since I leave at 5:45 every morning) I've tried leaving things outside for her to chew on but that hasn't changed anything. We did not crate train her. Don't think she could handle being crated all day anyway. We have yet to get her any formal training but have been working with her daily at home. She will sit, stay, come, etc. We've taught her to "high 5, lay, and roll over. I've done the Alpha training where she is not allowed to walk ahead of me, go out the door first, etc. She knows that it's wrong because the ears and head go down when I go out there and see the mess. We used to stop our other dog from digging by putting pepper in the area, any ideas similar to that? Are there any products out there, like scents, etc. for this?

NEED HELP...Madison is destroying our backyard!!!

Our beloved baby Aussie seems to love my DW's plants. :M She is a "mean, green-hating machine" I can't seem to find a way to keep her away from any flowers, plants, etc that the DW plants (other than completely surround them with 8' fenching!!) I am constantly coming home from work only to find shredded plant remains all over the back patio. Heck, last night the DW came home with 7 different plants/flowers and put them on the outside table. Later, I let Madison out to to "go" and not 5 mins later when I let her in.....the back patio was a litered with pieces of the plants. I know that it doesn't do any good to scold her after the fact, so how do I approach this to keep her from doing it to begin with???????? :h

RE: Making reservations

Does everyone plan their trips and reserve sites where they plan to stay? For the summer months here in CA....you betcha we do. Otherwise, the only open site will be in our drive way. :( Any of the state parks, Nat'l Forests, or beach camping book up 6 mths in advance. I'd rather not drive all that way only to find no open spaces.

RE: How many is too many?

One thing to remember, you don't necessarily want really low mileage on an older motorhome. If it is 15 yrs old and only has 20,000 miles on it, it really hasn't been driven that much. That kind of sitting, unused, creates a whole different set of problems.

RE: Wireless tow lights

I have been using the Harbor Freight ones and got them on sale. Very cheap and very reliable.

RE: Easy Curtain

I looked at them and decided just to get the ADCO Snooze Bonnet. It's about 1/2 the price and works great. Even though it goes on the outside, we have a privacy curtain behind the driver's cab anyway. Never had a problem with it.

RE: GETTING READY FOR THE 2010 CAMP SEASON

I'm not sure what your manual states, but we owned a 2004 Rockwood Premier for 4 yrs and never repacked the bearings. We used it 3-4 times a year with average mileage of around 750 miles per trip. Just kept them well lubed. If you just had the bearings repacked last year, I can't see why you would need to do them again this year, especially with only 150 miles. Just check the seals and add grease when needed. JMHO AS for the battery, I would suggest you keep the battery charged all year long. Just a trickle charge during non-use will keep it fully charged. Batteries don't like to be fully discharged and it will significantly shorten the life of the battery. If you notice it isn't holding a charge very long, you may need a new one again.

RE: Yosemite with a puppy

Thanks for all the input, it looks like we should be fine taking the puppy and there should be plenty to do. I better not tell the wife about the bears though. It does bring up a question we have, are you supposed to put all your food in a bear locker? What about the food in the fridge/freezer? Thanks If you have a hard side trailer/motor home, you do not need to empty the food out of it and put it the food locker. Here is the quote from their website on bears and food: Food may be stored out of sight in hard-sided trailers and RVs, as long as windows, doors, and vents are closed when you're not there. Food may not be stored in pop-up or tent trailers, or other soft-sided campers. Just remember, these bears know what a cooler is and what it usually contains. Here is the link to the Bears and Food Storage at Yosemite Tell the DW not to worry. We have been camping there and other areas of the Sierras, etc for over 20 years and have never been bothered by bears. Sure, they have come into the campsite looking for food, etc., but a few loud noises drives them away. Here is the section on "What to do if you see a bear..."

RE: Delamination Question

I would run away from a unit showing signs of delamination. From what I have read it is a very expensive process to fix and I'd bet the dealer isn't willing to fit the bill for it. I'm not sure how sealing it would help anything since the delamination is in the layers of the wall itself. JMHO

RE: Yosemite with a puppy

Good point about the bears. A few years ago I was awakened by the sound of gun shots!! Then there were a number of lights flashing and a car/truck with spot light driving through our loop. I really thought that there had been a shooting and the rangers were out looking for that person. Scared the******out of me. Well, come to find out. This is the time of year that the campgrounds start to fill up again. What I heard that night was the volunteers and rangers driving the bears out of the campground. You see, the bears have free run of the place all winter and get real cozy. So the park staff do kind of a "round up" where they shoot off bean bags and then drive the bears back into the hills!!! When I talked to the ranger the next day, he said there were about 15 bears that night in North Pines alone!

RE: RV Insurance

I got quotes from a bunch of companies and Progressive was the lowest by far. I have since had one claim with them from storm damage and they handled it quickly and painlessly. I brought the MH into the dealer for repairs and Progressive paid the dealer directly. No hassle. My rates did not go up this year either

RE: Yosemite with a puppy

Pets are NOT allowed on the hiking trails, only on bike paths, roads, etc. You will be able to take the dog on a leash to the valley areas like Lower Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, Cook's Meadow Loop and Mirror Lake, and other areas around the valley. If you want to venture out to other day hikes like Vernal Falls or Nevada Falls, you won't be able to bring the dog. Sounds like you want to do some hiking. There are a bunch of trails that should be open by then, but the weather controls that. The areas outside the valley in the higher elevations like Tioga Pass and Glacier Point will be closed. We were there last year in the beginning of April and it snowed the day we arrived. The next day, it was sunny and in the 60s. You just never know. Bring chains for the TV. I was turned away at the south gate due to the snow. Didn't have chains for the RV so couldn't get over the mountain pass into the valley, and had to detour to the 120. Here is the park's Pet Restrictions Here's some further info on things to do there. You'll see some of the pet restrictions here. We will be there again this year April 1st-7th, also in Lower Pines, site #75. Stop on by for a cold one!!!
