big bear lake july 4th fireworks - worth stopping overnight?

Hi Folks,
We will be leaving Las Vegas the morning of July 4 en route to Disneyland. We plan on sightseeing around LA on July 5 and visiting the parks on the 6th before moving on up to Carpinteria SB on the 7th (we have reservations). Rather than overnight in Anaheim on the 4th we are considering stopping over in Bear Lake for the fireworks (they are billed as the biggest in southern CA). We have an 11 and 12 year old and July 4 is not the 4th to them, without fireworks. Is it worth stopping??
Seranno campground is full, so I am also looking for alternatives - maybe Lighthouse Resort or Holloway's RV Park. We travel in a Class B, so clean bathrooms are important. We also would not rule out boondocking if there is anywhere it ia available in the local area.
Green Valley CG has a couple of open spots but I would prefer to be closer to the lake.
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Thanks!
A.

SF campground needed PLUS nearby kennel to board dog

Hi all,
We are planning on being in San Francisco July 10/11. Most campgrounds seem to be parking lots and if we need more, we need to look further out and travel into the city (anywhere up to an hour).
We travel in a class B with our mini australian shepherd. If we are going to be gone for the most of the day we really don't want to leave him home alone for all that time, so we would like to put him in a kennel for the day and collect him on our way back to the campground.
Anyone local, can you recommend a campground with a good quality kennel close by??
Thanks!
Angie

RE: Suggestions for kids activities - CA/Oregon/WA State coast

Sorry, I thought I noted their ages but looking back I didn't.
Boy - 11
Girl - 12
Both adventurous. Like wildlife.
In SF we plan a trip out to Alcatraz and Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown plus a ride on a cable car and a look see at Lombard St.
On our trip we are trying to balance the educational with fun activities.
Would you all suggest we detour to LA to do Disneyland? Have been to
Disneyworld many times and still have tickets left over, anybody know would they be good at DL?

Suggestions for kids activities - CA/Oregon/WA State coast

Hi all,
We are making a trip out west this summer that will take us to San Francisco and then north along the coast all the way up to Olympic NP.
We are planning on stopping at Big Sur, Redwoods NP, taking a ride on the postal boats at Gold Beach, stopping off at the aquarium in Newport etc.....
I've read so many guidebooks and web pages that everything is starting to blur, so I thought I would ask people who may have been there and done that. This is part of our 2 month east/west trip.
If you all can recommend some campgrounds (boondocking OK - traveling in a 19ft class B) or favorite places to eat (tasty & cheap) I'd love to hear about them too.
Thanks!

RE: Can you suggest the best route to traverse the southwest?

Thanks for all the website links and suggestions of sites to visit. I logged them all in bookmarks and will add them to my required reading.
Also, leaddog thanks for the suggested itinerary, as that's what I really needed help with.
It was nice to see comments from those attemping and/or completed a similar trip as I was starting to worry that I was planning the impossible. We probably won't be able to see/visit eveywhere we would like to but I truly believe, some is better than none.
These children have camped all over the Southeast USA for the past 5 years but have never experienced the scenery and magnitude out west.
It's going to be an experience, I'm sure they'll never forget (oh and the dog too - we couldn't leave him behind).

RE: Can you suggest the best route to traverse the southwest?

Sorry, I need a proof reader. Our intention was to take the southern route out west, hence the southwest mention and then head North, which is obviously as a couple of people rightfully pointed out 'northwest'. Sorry!
We are taking the children out of school early and hope to hit the road mid May, returning at the end of August.
We visited TX a couple of years ago and had a blast but don't plan on stopping for any length of time there, on this trip.
We have family in OR who we would like to stop and see but otherwise we have no plans.
I would love to be able to fulltime but at this stage in our lives it is just not possible but I also want my children to be able to see the country they read about in textbooks. We will only skim the surface and see the highlights on this trip but personally I believe that to be better than not making the trip at all. In a few more years the kids may not want to travel with us anyway!

Can you suggest the best route to traverse the southwest?

We (myself/hubby/2 kids 11-12 & our 1 year old australian shepherd)are planning an extended trip this spring/summer to the southwest.
We'll be travelling in our class B.
I've been researching National/State Parks, readings blogs of other peoples trips and sending off for each state's tourist guide but I'm so overwhelmed.
We'll be starting off in Wilmington, NC and looking to visit NM,AZ,CO,UT,NV,CA,OR,WA,ID,WY. I'd prefer to avoid KS (nothing personal). Our plan is to drive 6 hrs a day on our way to/from the southwest and then limit our driving to no more than 4 hrs a day(if possible) and seeing as much of the southwest as we can in the limited time we have.
Travelling in a B we usually limit our overnight stops to a maximum of 3 nights in any particular area.
The children love to explore (with the dog) and if theres water involved so much the better. Also the kids want to see lots of wildlife. Hubby and son both like to fish. We enjoy easy hikes.
My 12 year old daughter is the adventurous one and loves whitewater rafting, ziplining etc.
I was hoping you all could help with an idea of which states to hit and in what order?
I'm along for the ride and the scenery. I do know I want to travel the cost of CA between San Francissco and Oregon.
Thanks!
