RE: Running Generator while on shore power

The first and foremost reason and logic for unplugging the shore power is safety.
If, for some reason unknown to you, the landline power has been shut down by the power company and you connect a generator to your system, you are creating what is known as “feed back”.
You will be supplying the shore power circuit with 120 vac. This in turn feeds back to the main transformer at the pole, This in turn boosts the power from 120vac to what ever the transformer is rated. In most cases, this will be 37.5k.
If a lineman is working as close as a mile away on a broken power circuit and grabs hold of a line thinking that the power is “dead”. He gets fried to crisp, immediately.
A good practice to hold firm to is “always disconnect” from shore power, regardless of whether or not you have an auto transfer, manual transfer, or no transfer switch. The transfer switches can and will fail and you’ll never know it until its too late.

We drove back from that area not long ago and used the following.
I-30 to Little Rock, then I-40 to West Memphis, AR.
West MEM I-55 to I-57 to I-70.
I-70 to Indy, loop around Indy to US 31 North toward South Bend.
US20 to Elkhart.
Try not to go thru Kokomo during shift change, it can cause some delay.

Having camped in Douthat many times while we were in Roanoke, VA, I was about to say the same thing.
With you being from the the Land of Lakes area, (MN - I presume) where do you intend to get on the BRJ.

Not really. Simply multiply the cost per litre x 3.785 and you have the Canadian cost in gallons. If you need to get to US$, then divide that number by the exchange rate.
ie. 95.9 CA per litre x 3.785 = 3.63 CA per gallon.
3.63 div by 1.05 (what ever the ex rate) = $3.49 US$ per gal.

RE: Big Bend National Park Camping suggestion

The lodge at Lajitas is probably more in line with what your looking for. I heard or read a while back that the Lajitas lodge was experiencing financial problems. You should call them first before making any kind of reservations on line or mail.
The Chisos Basin lodge is run by an authorized vendor for the parks service. Recommend you call them direct for information on rooms. Both of these places are clean and nice.
I don't recommend driving a MH up to Chisos Basin, even if you fall slightly below the limit of 26ft.
BBNP is a vastly large expanse of desert. From Park Hdqs to Terlingua is about 28 miles. Up to Chisos Basin is about 12 from Park Hdqs.
Park Hdqs to Rio Grande Village is about 28 miles.
Read and heed the warnings about Border Crossings. If you get caught trying to cross over the river, the CBP will make your life a living hell.
If you have time, you may want to do a search in this forum for BBNP or Big Bend RVing or Big Bend camping. There is enough in there to keep you busy for a month.
Make certain you have enough fuel to carry you thru and get back to either Alpine or Marathon. Fuel is extremely expensive in the park and in Study Butte. Diesel is only available in Study Butte and the Chevron just west of park hdqs. Gas is available in Rio Grande Village which is about 30 miles east of park Hdqs and about 60 miles east of Terlingua/Study Butte.
Although it doesn't bother me in the least, the water down there has a lot of various natural components, especially iron. This makes it "dis-tasteful" for a lot of folks. You may want to carry an extra supply of bottled water. Not to be taken out of context, the water is safe to drink, that comes from a reliable source.

Weather Advisory No. TX I-35 &^ I-20

A strong cold front is expected in No. TX starting tonight thru Friday morning. Sleet and or ice is likely along and ahead of this front with snow and ice expected northwest of a line from Lampassas (30 mi west of Ft Hood) to Gainesville.
East of this line can expect heavy rain and/or freezing rain depending on how fast the temps drop.
This primariliy effects most of North, North East, North Central Texas from just west of I-35 and north of I-20 to the Red River.
Anyone traveling this area, strongly suggest that you monitor the updates on the NOAA weather frequency 162.4 thru 162.550 or go to the NOAA website for the latest info.
Click on Ft. Worth and or Shreveport.
The major issue will be the black ice that forms on the bridges and overpasses.

I put an extended range tank in my current diesel pickup, not because of a shortage of places to refuel but to save some big $$$. Plus I don’t have to stop every 230 miles when towing. This allows me to be super selective about where I get fuel. We’ve seen relatively cheap fuel cost for the last eighteen months. The speculators are forecasting $3 fuel again shortly. Some areas are already over this number.
I replaced the OEM tank shortly after towing down to the Big Bend area of Texas. Before I put the larger tank in, my range towing was about 230 or 240 maximum on the 26 gal OEM tank. BBNP is about a 100 miles off the beaten track of US90 in Alpine or Marathon. At the time diesel was running about 75¢ to 90¢ a gal more in the Big Bend area. There are only two places in the BBNP area to get fuel, one at park headquarters and the other in Study Butte. Even at that, they’re 30 miles apart.
By the time we towed down to the campground at Rio Grande Village we had used up 130 miles out of possible 230, not enough to drive around In the park or get back to Alpine or Marathon.
Needless to say, we had to buy enough fuel to get back to either Alpine or Marathon. Shortly after that first trip I replaced the 26 gal OEM for a 50 gal under-carriage Transfer Flow. This gives me the piece of mind to be able to do get into and out of BBNP, plus enough range to do some serious driving around the park.
But, I’ve never seen a time when the original 26 gal OEM tank wouldn’t get me by in the urban areas.
Problem is, there are a lot of places where we go in the desert southwest that an OEM tank just won’t hack it.

If you'll use MoRambler's suggestion, you'll arrive in Branson Town with all your senses, refreshed and ready to go.
You'll still be on speaking terms with the wife, and most of all, you have all your hair and if it's was black when you left RGV it'll still be that color arriving in Branson.

Once you leave Kingman/Flagstaff area of AZ, there won't be any "cool" places to stop. It will be in the 100's in the desert and across TX, OK and into AR. Once you hit TN, the humidity will make it feel like 100+.

RE: TX -19, from Huntsville to I-30

Nothing wrong with TX 19 all the way to Sulphur Springs where you'll hit I-30.
Might hit some traffic in Canton, if you go thru on a First Monday Trades Day. TX19 narrows down going thru Emory but gets back to wide shoulders once out of town.
You might consider going around the loops in Palestine and Athens.
There's a small bit of construction for about a mile on the south side of Sulphur Springs at I-30 but nothing serious.
Point is about six miles NE of Emory will cause some back tracking depending on what part of Tawokoni you're headed.

I would take I-35 to Dallas, 69/75 to I-40 east road.
Making the transition from I-35 to US69/US75 in Dallas can be a real tricky situation. One that requires a lot of planing and route familiarization if you're not real sure of the Dallas area.
There are two ways to do so, but either one takes you thru some of the most hectic and heaviest traffic in the entire Metro-mess.
If you choose this route, you are much better off taking I-35W at Hillsboro, TX thru Ft Worth up to Gainesville, then US82 east, across to Sherman, TX. It's a little further but the traffic is 20x lighter.

Depending on where you're starting from in Dallas, I'd take I-35E/I-35 down to Waco.
At Waco turn west on US84 over to Evant, then US281 south down to Johnson City.
At JC take US290 over to Fredericksburg, then TX16 down to Kerrville.
We've tried about every way possible and this works out best for us.
Not only that but it keeps you away from the Austin mess and avoids San Antonio.
If you're not in a big rush, then stay on US84 over to Goldthwaite, then TX16 down. This is the scenic route, but the roads are good.
One thing you don't want to do is take US67 southwest. That's almost as bad as DFW rush hour traffic all the way to Brownwood.

Big bucks from energy industry making it's way back to the motoring public. They still need to model these places for private enterprize to run them. The many states that are closing them, should especially try to get vendors to generate funs at the stops. Travelers are realy upset with Airzona's closings of many stops.
I respectfully disagree. There's not much to run in a rest stop other than refilling the vending machines and keeping the rest rooms cleaned. Both of which are done by outside help.
In addition, we like to adhere to the old saying of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
It all boils down to money management and watching the store.
Another issue is the way we pay for projects. Our constitution dictates that we have the money to pay before starting a project. In other words Texas operates on a "cash basis", This is unlike a lot of other states that have to "go in the hole" to get a project approved.

The SIT tone has been around for at least 25 maybe even 35 years. It's been around so long I simply can't remember, lay off to CRAFT disease.
Spelled out that's (C)an't - (R)ember - (A)- (F)ricking - (T)hing
It started off being refereed to as Signal Interrupter Tone, then when computers became so popular with computer automated dialing, the name was changed to Special Information Tone.
You hear it when you reach a number that is "No longer in Service", Not a working number", or "A one (1) is required when dialing this number"
When the spammers ie scammers are using predictive dialing, which 99.999% do, the call will automatically disconnect from the computer driven dialing and automatically place that number on a "No Service" list.
Hope this helps - Pardon the acronym - old habits that go back 50 years before texting are hard to break.
