RE: Our first cross country rv trip

I always start planning a route with MS Streets & Trips. Then put in our preferred leave time and ending time and it tells me when to stop overnight. Search a few campgrounds nearby and plug in a campground address and head off for the day.
We usually drive no more than 5-6 hrs a day, which is well within our comfort levels. Never calculate in miles, except for fuel. Because every stretch of the route is different with road construction, traffic accidents and speeds vary in every state. Then we may stop more/less frequently at Rest Areas.
Once we're on the road, if we're going slower or need a fuel or RA break, I always check Next Exit or Exit Now or phone apps for what's coming ahead. Never rely on the GPS, because it's easier to check with exits ahead and quick calculate distance. I only recently discovered Road Ahead on my iPhone and it's been a great asset.

RE: Cleveland GA to Crossville TN

GA-Hwy 52 is worse than 53. 53 is such a short winding section, it's not an issue with us.
We usually go to or from Cumming (RVPark) to I-20 through Canton and onto I-70.
The OP wants to avoid mountains. The route you suggest is similar to the one I suggested originally so his wife won't have to deal with elevation issues.
I guess I shouldn't have agreed with you then. LOL
But we've also taken GA-400 to Hwy 369 (Matt Hwy) and over to I-5 or down to I-20 and up through Fairmount. When you live in the same area for over 20 years, it's easy to know different routes.

RE: Tiny Homes, homemade trailer

I've looked at most of the Tiny Homes floorplans. For the price and sq footage, a TT is better. If I want a tiny home that moves easily, I'd get a Truck Camper.
"Things to considering when ordering a house:
Your new house can be completed in as little as six weeks.
We are located near Central Florida and can deliver almost anywhere in the United States.
20 foot homes start at only $34,000 (25% down payment required to begin construction"

RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

We've tried different methods. Because we usually forgot the walkie-talkies inside, cell phones are more reliable.

RE: Bandera, TX in Hill Country

Looks similar to a metal barn we had built on acreage in Western Oregon back in the 70's. My parents would pull their small 5er inside and stay there out of the elements with both doors open to catch a cross breeze. The sides were DH's shop.
We can't decide where we want one built, but it's been our plan after retirement for years now.

RE: Cross Country Trip Which Route to take?

I'd stay on the northern route, too.
We would drive from our home in North GA to Ocean Shores or the Oregon Coast and have taken many different routes. We once drove the mini-van straight with only one hour sleep on the side of the road in MT and multiple meals at McDonald's. All in less than 48 hrs.
In Feb, we drove from Atlanta to SA. I-10 from Mobile to SA about beat us to death towing. So, we are heading from San Antonio up to Oregon and then back to N.GA in July, we'll be coming back the northern route because of the heat and road conditions.
When we drove from the Grand Canyon up to the Redwoods on another CC trip, advice was to drive through the Mojave Desert at night. Best advice ever. The mini-van radiator had no problems overheating. But I've never seen any warnings on the northern route.

RE: GPS Software

As the navigator, I use MS S&T's to outline initial route with the help of iPhone Maps App because it will sometimes give us more alternatives and different driving times.
Then plug stops into Ford Navigation as we're driving. But sometimes follow along with iPhone Maps App using Current Location if we're in an unfamiliar location.

RE: How to research the tiny city/county campgrounds

Google campgrounds in the area that would be 2 hrs from home. Some city/county parks don't have full hook-ups.
Or if you have a Smart Phone, there are many campground apps that will show current location as you're driving.
We use a combination of both.

RE: 2 weeks....here we come

The only thing I see missing from your route is the Painted Desert, Petrified Forest on the East side of the Grand Canyon. We enjoyed that more than the Grand Canyon itself. Well, not the only thing. Since you've driven all that way, too bad you can't hit northern CA and go through the Redwood forest.
We leave San Antonio in 6 wks (unless project is delayed by weather) for a 5000 mile trip up Friends and Family Trip. But our route is through Roswell, Albq, Moab, Sweet Home, Oregon Coast (?), Portland, Bozeman, Sturgis and then head south to North GA to wait for next assignment. I'm still tweaking the trip and devising our return route.
We're on a tighter schedule and only get 3 wks this year, so it's a lot of 1-night stands.

RE: Sorry state of fuel in North America

What a pain it was in 2007 trying to find ULSD diesel pumps for our 2008 F450. When we weren't towing it wasn't as bad as trying to find some place before we ran out of fuel.
The irony, is the different fuel formulas are what drives up the price in some areas. Yet, drive a few miles over a state line and their formula and often their price is more/less.

RE: Yikes, we did it

Now I really feel like an old-timer. March was our 7th anniversary and we're well into our 8th year of living on the road.
Time flies when you're having fun, even if our schedule requires us to sit in one spot for 4-6 mos at a time.
Prior to fulltiming, we'd lived in 6 states in 35 yrs. But since FTing, we've managed to live and work in 12 different states so far. Some multiple times, and overnighted in 2 others. But that's about to change this summer as we'll be overnighting in many more on an extended trip.

I heard they are required to put in a fixed unit even if they already have a portable one. Which in some cases would cause a tripping hazard.
It's just another attorney income generator. They hire disabled to complain about non-ADA compliant businesses.

RE: Gettysburg 2013

Don't bother, just watched a program last night and according to the Mayans Dec 21 is the last day of the earth. You will not need reservations after that date.
Didn't you hear last week, they found more calendars?
"Newly discovered wall writings found in Guatemala show the famed Maya culture's obsession with cycles of time. But they also show calendars that go well beyond 2012, the year when the vanished civilization, according to popular culture, expected the end of the world."
We spent a day in Gettysburg on our road trip from Harrisburg, PA to Williamsburg, VA 17 yrs ago. Last year, we found DH's 3rd GGF died in the battle and is buried in Row C.

RE: Homesick for the sunshine!

We might have sun in San Antonio, but I can't wait to leave here at the end of June.
Was surprised they've had weeks of 90+ degrees,so early in the year. While in Atlanta it's been much cooler. But experienced the same thing while in St Louis last summer.

RE: Frameless windows?

Except for the windows in our slides, we have all frameless windows by Hehr.
We developed a leak at the top of our rear picture window in Feb after a 1000 mile trip. That's well over 3 yrs.
It was a simple fix with Silicone bead run on the outside at top of it. With all the heavy rains we've encountered since, no leakage.
