RE: Steering problem

..........Now they tell me it has a "floating " front end and this is normal.
ROFLMAO--- Take it somewhere else. Unless something is actually wrong, this is an easy adjustment which you could probably do yourself (but shouldn't have to).

RE: changing a flat

the truck is a 2500 GMC with an 8.5' TC on board(not sure of wet TC weight) prolly in the vicinity of 3,000lbs.i will be using an 8 ton bottle jack in lieu of the OEM from the mfg.
I have first hand experience with a rig almost identical to yours. My previous truck was a 2001 Chevy 2500HD 4X4. My camper is still the same as in my signature. I had a BFG AT blow out on the passenger rear. The factory jack lifted the truck with no problem without any help from the camper jacks. I was surprised at how easy it was.
If you have the factory jack I wouldn't bother with carrying the bottle jack unless you use it for something else. I would make sure to have some boards to set the jack on if needed. I carry leveling boards which can do double duty if needed.

RE: Idling my 2007.5 Chev 2500 6.6 L. D/A

Only time I let mine idle is when stopping after a long run or heavy load to let the internal heat dissipate and for the turbo to cool down so it doesn't cook the oil in the turbo bearings, usually about 5 minutes. Other than that there is no need to waste fuel. Long idle times can also result in low combustion temperatures which result in unburned fuel washing the oil off the cylinder walls and causing premature ring And cylinder wear.
X2
I just turn mine off regardless. :) The Edge J/A has a turbo cool down timer which I have set at 320. The truck automatically shuts down when the EGT reaches that level.

RE: Inverter Wiring from Battery

A 100 amp fuse seems rather large for a 300 watt inverter. Even at almost twice that load a 50 amp would probably be OK. It should be sized adequate for the load and inefficiencies of the inverter and for the wire size between the batteries and the inverter.

RE: Feel stupid...

My truck only supplies power to the camper when the engine is running (so as not to run the truck battery down). So in my case the answer is no.X2
Were your trucks wired like that from the factory or did you install battery isolation as an aftermarket item? If its aftermarket, what sort of device did you use and what are its advantages over other types of isolation devices?
I realize we're talking about campers here, but this is something I haven't ever considered and I'm thinking this might be a pretty darn good idea for tow trailers as well. It would be a breeze to wire an isolation device into the 12 supply for the 7-way on the back of my truck.
Thanks for this post!
I have had a 2001 Chevy 2500HD and now a 2006 Dodge RAM 3500. Neither came from the factory with switched power. I added a 12 volt relay to automatically switch the TC charge line when the truck is switched on. I learned the hard way with the Chevy while visiting Tombstone, AZ. I installed the mod immediately after returning home. I modded the Dodge prior to first use.
It will work fine with a TT as well. In fact the Tombstone incident was with a TT.

RE: Thinking of going from 245/75R16 to 265/75R16 tires

I had a 2001 Chevy 2500HD. I went to 265s with no problems whatsoever. Nothing was reprogrammed and the speedometer was still within 1 mph of the speed reported by my GPS.

RE: Accepted Etiquette For State Maps in Signature and on TC

I show only the states and provinces we have camped in with the current camper.
And WOW, you get around:)
We have been enjoying the TC since purchasing it in Oct 2007. 57 more days till retirement at which time I hope to fill in more states.:)
I have never understood what motivates the people who fake military service. I guess they may have regrets about never having served or want to cash in on the respect former and current veterans receive these days. Although that would seem rather hollow knowing in their heart they never served.
Sleepy, I used all 4 years of my GI Bill to earn an engineering degree. It was a great help. It would have been far more difficult without it.

RE: Checklist for TC setup/take down

I'm a firm believer in not using written check lists. Heck I would lose it within 2 minutes writing it up anyways.
Jacks up, awning up and locked, chocks and leveling blocks put away, doors and cabinets shut and locked, fridge on propane, water pump off. drive away
That's the list I used the time I drove down the highway with the slide open. LOL!
Yeah but I don't have a slide out on my TC so it works...lol
I don't have a slide either but I did drive around most of one day with the TV antenna still up. Felt like an idiot. Fortunately it was in eastern New Mexico so I didn't hit anything.

Really enjoy riding along on your trips Sleepy.
Unfortunately camps such as Andersonville were not uncommon during the Civil War, differing mostly only in magnitude. Google "Camp Douglas" for the Union equivalent.

RE: Well this sucks... kinda

Do you need a destination? Fill the truck with fuel, fill the camper up with supplies and start driving.
That's my kind of vacation!
If you want to remain in the electrical engineering field consider checking out Huntsville, AL if you come east. It is a great place to live if you are an engineer. In my 39 years as an engineer I have traveled the US extensively. There are few places (from a job perspective) better for engineers.
Your lack of debt puts you in very good position to weather whatever may come. Good luck to you.
3 more months to retirement!!:B

RE: Mountain Towing

On your 06 make sure you use the Tow/Haul position on the transmission shifter. This will keep the Torque Converter locked in both OD and 3rd gear. Possibly 2nd gear also but I'm not sure. This works real well to retard your speed.
