RE: HELP!!! GVWR vs UVW

Look inside kitchen cabinet doors, there should be a noticed posted with dry weight and gvw. Dry weight doesn't include any options, ie awning, and anthing dealer may have installed, plus weight of propane, battery, water, food, etc.
You will be considerably over your towing weight rating. I'm assuming you have the 5.3 engine with 3.73 rear axle. I had same truck with this engine/rear combo and towed 5000-lb 5vr. My truck was also rated 7800-lb towing. The 5000-lb is about all the truck could handle comfortably.
You'll need more truck or less trailer, IMHO.

RE: Another tire question

Check your rims for max psi or weight to make sure they can handle C rated tires. You may have to upgrade the rims also.

RE: Shackle tore out -- Mor Ryde RE suspension -- how to fix?

That's it. Had same thing happen to me. Take your time and jack it up and place jack stands under several sections of frame. I used three stands.
I replaced all my shackles with with some that were slightly thicker and bigger outside dimensions but same hole setup.

RE: dish network settings in Calgary , Alberta Canada

Found website with US settings for DISH.
http://www.dishretailer.com/dishstore/dish1000/DISH_1000_Installation_Guide.pdf
Try following settings, they should be very close. I adjusted them from Missoula, MT.
AZ - 170
EL - 3l
SK - 95
Hope this helps.
I got printout of All US zip settings.

RE: dish network settings in Calgary , Alberta Canada

You might get Dish to give you Missoula, MT's settings and subtracting little elevation, starting with Missoula's then downward.

RE: Al-Ko Axle

While you're under there you might want to check all the shackles for excessive wear.

RE: Cougar vs Montana

Montana is several rungs up the ladder from Cougar. We have enjoyed our Cougar, but the Montana is probably worth the difference in price. It all depends on which floorplan you're looking for and cargo capacity of your truck. The Montana is heavier for a good reason.

RE: camping from NY to california and back

Discuss with family what you want to see and do. Sightseeing national parks, ie Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Blue Ridge Pkwy, Hiking in state/national parks, ie Yosemite, redwoods. Amusement-type parks, ie Dollywood, Wisconsin Dells.
Plan as much time as you can, it still will not be enough. We took 94-day, 12000-mi trip around the US. Nowhere near enough time.

RE: Dish Network

We also just changed to Dish from Directv this week. They installed HD service with dual HDDVR and single HD received (3 rooms). After some discussion with installers (private company) about using Dish in a 5vr, I was able to get them to part with a HD satellite dish with cable for "lunch money". I also tipped them some. Now all I need is HDTV and I'm good to go on the road again.
HD dish is same size as my old directv standard dish was and I can use same tripod. It has 3 cones.

RE: How can I find my trailer weight?

On nada.com it show weight 5030, probably dry weight. Hope that helps. Of course anything added to trailer will increase weight considerably (propane/water/food/clothing/supplies, etc, etc).

RE: New Truck Prices

I don't believe there's any requirement for anyone to pay $70K for a pickup. Those prices don't bother me at all. I have no intention of getting one. I'll just have to keep getting by on my little 05 2500HD with 26K miles until it can no longer drag my 9200-lb 5vr.

Wouldn't the driver towing the unit be in violation of DOT laws, not the dealer. Driver is responsible once he hits the road.

I too was taught to quickly turn head after checking side mirror. This has saved me several times. Also convex mirrors added.

RE: Tires blistering

We've run in 116 degree heat and never a blister or blowout on TV's or trailers (even Mission tires on 5vr). Even running over curbs didn't cause any problems.
You case is a strange one.

RE: GRAY TANKS FILL TOO FAST...

DW learned the hard way to take much shorter showers, using less water, after having water back up into the shower while she was in it. Now we can get 3 days showers in before it fills.
When boondocking, or at least no sewer hookup, we use paper plates and cups. Like you, our black tank is nowhere near full when gray tanks are.

RE: confused about GVWR

Weigh the burb, family, dogs, full tank, and stuff as if you're going camping. Subtract that total from your gvwr. That will tell you have much hitch weight you can "carry", including hitch.

RE: stainless steel exaust headers

Go with a mild steel, coated from Dougs or similar. The coating keeps the heat in the exhaust unlike SS which radiates it outward. The coating also insures that they will last as long as the stainless. Look for a thick head flange and a thick collector flange like in the Dougs or Doug Thorley. The mild steel will usually seal better after they have been heat cycled and retorqued.
Randy
I had set of Thorley ss headers in my 90 350. Those puppies do put out the HEAT! Along with chip and Flowmaster mufflers they put out a sweet sound and increased power. Didn't notice any difference in mpg, but that could be because I liked to get on it. Did have gasket blow out twice.
