RE: newbie backing in advice

Experience is merely applied knowledge. Practicing all day long isn't going to get you anywhere but making sure you do it wrong perfectly!! THINK what is going to happen BEFORE you make your move. So......GO GET A TOY SEMI TRACTOR AND TRAILER and figure out how to make that trailer move where you want it while it's on the kitchen table. Don't be insulted....you'll be amazed at how quick it will teach you how to back a 5'er. When you come to a stop and put your rig in reverse you will now have it positioned correctly before you begin to back up. Then just remember to grab the BOTTOM of the steering wheel and move it left or right to move the rear of the trailer that way. Do not let a spotter tell you what to do. At best, they are simply there to see what you can't and stop you before a collision. Hope this helps you out. I've taught a lot of truck drivers AFTER they came out of school how to back up. This simple tool works great. And hey...when you're thru with it, maybe you can give it to one of the Grandkids! Good success! -Jeff

RE: Shark bite fitting and PEX plumbing ???

Just make sure you have PEX inb the trailer and not the stuff with the clear vinyl skin on it. -Jeff

RE: Nankook or Goodyear???

Just put a brand new set of four Goodyear Silent Armor Professional 10ply LT tires on my Excursion, LT285/75R16. Look great, very quiet, and hands down the worst handling set of tires I have ever owned! Lateral sway is horrible. Going to Nitto's soon. This is the 2nd set of Goodyears with the same problem. Never again!

RE: Why do you like RVing?

FREEDOM!!!! We get away and have everything we need to be comfortable! We can have a blast with toys, friends, family, or....just be alone if we want. Our RV is definitely a recreational vehicle, not a camper. It is what we want it to be for the activities we have planned. -Jeff

RE: Purchasing an RV-Dave Ramsey

Recently I responded to a post about refinancing an RV for 15 years and I replied that I didn't think it was a good idea to finance an RV long term. I was told that it was none of my business, which is true. However, having listened to Dave Ramsey promote being debt free and how we have been raised in a culture which encourages us to get what we can't afford now by delaying payment (called a loan) I'm just wondering how many of you have bought into Dave Ramsey and now have a goal of not borrowing, especially for "recreational items" like RV's, TV's, boats etc. We are now debt free and really hope to keep it that way; however, for us that means saving up for only a used, modest RV(probably no more than $10,000) in the future because we will never be able to afford anything like a new motorhome. Let me say this... My Dad died a year ago. As I have been thinking back on his life all that comes to memory are the good times we had. We camped in the rv, we flew his airplane, we rode his snowmobiles, we motorcycled, we drove his heavy equipment.....and the list goes on. Dad worked all his life harder than any man I have ever known, and I most of it had debt. If I were to look back now and only be able to say he was always debt free, somehow that doesn't seem much of a eulogy to me. I'm glad for the sruggles, it built charachter. Having a debt to pay can make you work harder and acheive more. Cash only is a great way to live, but very few have the drive to push beyond that (as in the OP's last sentence). That's sad, and you only have to look to some of the poorest counties in the world to realize that living without debt doesn't guarantee a great life. Be all you can be, live life, love others, and give to the less fortunate. Credit? It's a personal decision, but CAN be a very positive thing in ones life. -Jeff

RE: Ordered a new Cameo

Congrats on new Cameo. I would strongly suggest that if you didn't order a tire upgrade to Goodyear G rated tires that you have the dealer change out the tires before delivery. This remains to be the one common complaint among many Cameo owners. Our 2011 has been on the road 9 months with no problems or defects recorded. Glad to hear this recommendation from a "Cameo Owner". I thought the same thing but wasn't going to rain on the parade. 16000 GVW minus 2900 pin = 3275lbs per wheel when loaded. Phwew! Glad you went for the upgrade, and I'm jealous of your disc brake upgrade. Been going to do that for awhile now. Happy trails! -Jeff

RE: Ordered a new Cameo

Nothing like a factory order! Way to go! I bet you'll be at the dealers lot when it comes in to make sure a bunch of people aren't allowed to walk thru and check out 'your' RV. Ha! Now the months of anticipation begin! Think I called the factory 4 times to check on mine when it was being built. We'll be waiting for those pics. Congratulations! -Jeff

Looks like we need to fill 339, 341, 342? I'll check around, maybe we can come up with another participant or two? Hey, with all the sunshine today somebody ought to be getting ready! Ha! Thanks for all your work on this Jon! Look forward to meeting you and the others. -Jeff

RE: Jacking Your Fiver - Your Method?

My axles are made by Lippert Components and their manual says, “Warning: Lift unit by the frame and never the axle or suspension.” My 5er’s manual says the same thing. With the 5er hooked up to the truck, I place my bottle jack on a stack of wood and Lynx Levelers and lift the frame. Yeah, I've seen the same thing for mine. Can't figure what they're getting at. The whole trailer is supported by the axles at the spring hanger. That is the natural spot to jack. Maybe they think you might try to raise the whole side of the trailer on one axle point? That's why I just block the axle and deflate the tire. Quite simple, and it puts no more weight on that point than with the wheels on the ground. -Jeff

RE: Jacking Your Fiver - Your Method?

I would plank under the axle where the spring fastens, then deflate your tires. -Jeff

Well.....that's no excuse!:) Ha, ha! Shot our first photo at the dealer when it came in from California! Wow, what a day! I remember it well and am REALLY excited for you! RE: Down Hill Braking Technique

You got me there and we got on a side issue with the exhaust brake and EBPV mod and I extended that to the OP which was in error and since we were on page two, I didn't go back to check exactly what the OP had. -Larry Oops! I forgot the OP too! Got off on the EBPV issue as a side track. Larry, a most gracious response, lots of towing experience, thanks! Btw...I don't need the valve controller either, but my son has it on his 7.3PSD and it actually does work great. You just have to remember how many thousand dollars it saved you over the 'real thing' and it seems very justified to use. When it comes on you can really feel it. Now that I've tried it first hand I'm going to wire it up on my truck....just for that little extra. This has been a fun thread on downhill braking and lots of good info. -Jeff

RE: Down Hill Braking Technique

Considering I don't have a turbo, I don't think I have a butterfly valve to hot wire. Otherwise, I might consider it. Are you saying your F250 listed in your profile is pre '94??? And to Larry...obviously you have no experience with a EBPV controller. Thanks for giving everyone your opinion anyway. :h -Jeff
