RE: Total noob question regarding tow capacity

Hanging a bike rack off the spare tire is a bad idea in my opinion. Your making a long trip so I would not add any "weak links" and a bike rack on a spare tire attached to a weak bumper is not recommended. Put them in the back of the truck, in the TT, or on a hitch mounted to the front of your truck.
I also made a move from Seattle Washington to Savannah GA. But mine was about 40 plus years ago when I was about 3 years old. My dad worked for Boeing and left them to work at Grumman which is now Gulfstream.
I hope you enjoy Savannah. I grew up there and really enjoyed it.

RE: Towing input needed for 32 ft camper w/ expedition

I had a 2007 expedition and pulled my 33 foot travel trailer with it for almost 2 years. TT weighed 6280 dry and about 7100 fully loaded. When I first got the TT I had the equalizer brand hitch. I never had a issue with power from the expedition. Fuel mileage was not good at less than 9 miles a gallon and the tank was small had to stop for fuel every 2-3 hours. But I was never comfortable pulling it on the interstate. Big trucks passing me caused the "bow wave effect" where they move the camper around and you feel like they are sucking you into them. I sold the equalizer and bought the hensley hitch and all that went away. Much more comfortable towing. I did trade the expedition on a F250 but would not be scared to pull a 33 ft camper with a expedition but I highly recommend a hensley or pro pride hitch. The short wheel base of the expedition will be noticed especially on the highway.

RE: FLAT TIRE!!!!!!

One of my camping buddies called the ERS and could have drank a drum of coffee waiting on them to arrive. He finally got fed up and changed it himself.
To answer the OP question I suggest practicing at home in the driveway with whatever jack you plan to use. Familarize yourself with the jack, where to place it, and removing the tire and putting on the spare.
Better to have experience and not make your first time ever on the side of the interstate.

RE: Converter shot?

Do all the checks people above recommend but it sounds like the converter. Mine went out a couple years ago. I now keep a battery charger with me in case this ever happens again while I'm camping. Just plug in the battery charger to your battery and everything will work as long as your battery stays charged. I swaped mine out my self and it was not too hard to replace. wires were a little tight to work with but not too bad of a job. good luck.

RE: Black tank power washer

Scott,
Your right about the kitchen galley. I have one on my black tank but wish I'd put one on my galley tank when the underbelly was open. Any food that goes down when doing dishes, etc causes a very foul smell.

RE: Bikes On Front Of Truck/If You Do, How Do You Like?

Like anything else this comes down to a matter of opinion. I have tried bike hitches on the back of my camper, putting bikes in the truck, in the camper, but now I have a Bodiak Hitch on the front of my truck and it works very well. Easy to put them on and take off, was distracting for about the first 30 minutes but now I don't notice them and have had no headlight issues.
The argument about falling off seems a little silly to me. If you put them on the back and they fell off what would that do to the person behind you? What if your entire camper came off? If you start going that route then you just need to stay home. Like everything else make sure your set up is sound. the setup I have on the front of my truck is sound and solid. Nothing is 100% guaranteed but it's as close as it's going to get.

RE: Bike Carrier/There Must Be A Solution/Quality Important

Bodiak makes a front hitch that will bolt directly to the hooks on the front of your truck. I have it and love it. Can easily be removed. You get a solid receiver and can put whatever you want in the front. Very easily to load and unload bikes.

RE: Equalizer hitch question

I agree with the post above. go to equilizer brands website and print out the instructions. Read them over several times then go through your setup like it was new. It's really not that complicated and the better you understand it the better you can make the proper adjustments.

RE: Rear end bounce

There is a section of Hwy west of Greensboro, NC on I-40 where I experience this evertime I travel it. We usually travel with quite a few other campers and all of us feel it. It is a area with expansion joints.

RE: How often should I change my tires on my travel trailer?

I agree with Terryallan and change mine every 4 years. We have over 10 campers in our "club" and almost everyone has had blowouts. All have caused some damage beyond the tire from small cosmetic damage to fairly major damage to the floor, dinnette and wall. I have insurance but if I have a blowout and have to use it the deductable I have to pay would almost cover the cost of 4 new tires. I figure spend the deductable money up front on new tires every 4 years and try to avoid the blowout. I bought Maxxis tires this last time.

RE: Drop down vs crank down stabilizers

The ones you have are similiar to what I had on my previous popup. I carried a shovel so I could dig out the area when faced with the issue you mentioned. Of course I don't ever remember trying to dig into frozen ground. Shovel came in handy for other uses around the fire and such. If you end up changing the scissor ones will probably be best.

RE: ok to use a brick under a 4x4 wood block as tongue jack base?

I think the brick will be OK. I use the plastic stackable lego type blocks from camping world for the same purpose. Or you could get a 2 X 8 and cut into sections and use that. That would be plenty wide enough to be stable and create the height you need. Keep them with you because it's not uncommon to find a campsite with the same issue.

RE: Install larger grey water tank

Tent campers? Popups with no tanks? Most do it. Wash their dishes then walk over to the tree and dump out the water. Lots of outdoor showers around popups. I also keep my tanks flushed and most of what comes out of mine at a trickle late at night is soapy water.
Can't be worse than leaning over and smelling what comes out of a animal when he poos in the woods. :)

RE: Mountain Towing (I-77 on NC/VA Border - Fancy Gap)

Byrdr1 (Randy) and I camp together often and his advice is accurate. One thing to watch like he mentioned is fog. Fog is very common in this area and it can be very thick. So thick you cannot see very far in front of you. First time I went up from NC side it was early in the morning and I hit the fog and it was thick. I turned on my flashers, slowed way down, and followed the lane lines. Made it to the top and before I knew it it completely cleared up as fast as it it fogged over. It's only about a 8 mile or so stretch so it's not a time to be in a race or hurry. Coming down grade just tap your brakes as needed. Keep your speed under control and don't ride your brakes. We are going up to Fancy Gap KOA the Wednesday before halloween. We have a big group going and hoping for good weather. Good Luck!

RE: 12V lights dimming

I had the same problem while camping last year and it was the converter. I ended up hooking up a battery charger to my battery and that got me through the rest of the campout and then changed the converter. Mine was still under warranty (they are not cheap).

RE: Stabilizer question

I have 2 friends that added 2 addittional scissor jacks to the frame close to the axles. Pretty simple to install with self tapping screws straight into the frame. Not that expensive and they say they really helped with movement. If you really want to cutdown on movement might want to add these when you replace the ones up front.

RE: Forest River vs. Jayco

I previously had a 23B Jayco Jayfeather. I currently have a 831BHSS Flagstaff which is very much like the Rockwood Signature Ultralight. I really like my current Flagstaff and have no major complaints but comparing these 2 lines I would say the quality was better on the Jayco.
